    KORG Gadget Taipei finally adds MIDI Out for Gadget. To many this might just be a nice little update, but for veteran KORG Gadget users, this is so much more. We’ve been waiting for years for something like this. Taipei isn’t perfect perfect however and in this episode of haQ attaQ, I’ll be going over the ups and downs with this new Gadget. Taipei is a game changing gadget. I'm a bit new to Gadget, but the amazing sequencer can run other synths in AUM. This opens all sorts of incredible options.

    It's a great free update. Man. Korg really blew it out of the water.
    I do wish they would have added the ability to have some track measures be a division of the main so that you could do more polyrhythmic things, but that's nitpicky for something that can do so much and get ideas going quickly.
    Thanks for the video!

    Wonderfully explained, bro. Thank you.
    I tried to send the clock/tempo from Gadget to my Akai midi arppegiator, without success.

      Give it a try. What I get out of Korg Gadget is often better than what I ever produced with my traditional DAWs and VSTs.

  • @TheRealWinsletFan
    @TheRealWinsletFan 5 років тому +2

    FYI Most(all?) DAWs send the "Local Off" MIDI command, then the MIDI loops through the DAW. If it's not automatic your synth will have the setting in its menus, the Mininova certainly does ( Menu->Global->Local Control On/off )

    • @DjangoFlaherty
      @DjangoFlaherty 5 років тому

      I didn't know there were DAWs that sent it as a message, but I discovered "local off" by accident on an old Yamaha keyboard and have used it ever since. Good tip!

    great video. For me just being able to sequence hardware is a game-changer. The gadget sequencer could be the best solution for sequencing all kinds of hardware out there right now. Feeding the audio back in was ambitious!

    • @davidosolo
      @davidosolo 5 років тому +1

      Hank, I agree that it is ambitious. Korg simply didn´t facilitate this in an acceptable manner.
      However, Jakob has a good point here. If your workflow with hardware is 100% hardware (including hardware mixer, hardware effects, etc.), then this sequencer can come in very handy. But if you just would like to add one or two hardware instruments to your Korg Gadget project, then I think it is essential to be able to lead them back into the DAW and be able to add the Korg Gadget effects on them etc.

    Lots of great new features and gadgets. I do hope they revise the color scheme to improve contrast. The latency and crackles issue is something I agree Korg needs to address by optimizing the app more. The continued clunky approach to audio is Gadget’s Achilles heel.

    Taipei and Durban are two of the six new gadgets which are free when you already owned KORG Gadget for iOS. The other new Gadgets are paid ones which two of them are unannounced. Also, KORG provides discount for any paid Gadget (€8.99 to €10.99) lasting this whole month. I specially bought an extra Apple gift card so I can spend it on some new Gadgets. I love it!!! ❤️

    First, it's great wobblez, HaQ! Halleluiah we finally got Midi out …. well …. some, without direct recording back to Gadget as audio and that midi assign hiccup. I was playing iSEM driven by Taipei, but did not figured out a way to direct audio (within the iPad). Are you saying I could pickup audio stream into Gadget with AUM?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  5 років тому

      No, unfortunately Gadget doesn’t support anything like IAA into Zürich. It’s will only connect to and record from external sound interfaces.
      .
      It’s a shame really. So right now KORG gadget can send AUDIO and MIDI out to everything else. It can also receive MIDI in from everything else, but only AUDIO in from external sound interfaces.
      .
      So the only way would be to feed audio out through a sound interface and hen back into the sound interface I’m able to record external apps. And this is problematic because of feed-back loop issues of course.

    Why is it that the Au3 has to be open up in order to work in Gadget 2, where as other DAW programs it doesn’t have to be open up.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  4 роки тому

      KORG Gadget does not support external AUv3’s. KORG Gadget and some of its IAP gadgets are using the IAA protocol and also the Audiobus SDK. This is most likely why you have to actually launch iMono/Poly (and other IAP gadgets) because they have to startup a connection node that Gadget can connect to.

    • @clydiscope
      @clydiscope 5 років тому

      davidosolo maybe you could sidechain the result into Zurich if you’re working with an iPad instrument? In any case I just use an external mixer to record any hardware I hookup to the thing.

    • @davidosolo
      @davidosolo 5 років тому

      @@clydiscope Jakob explains the option of getting the audio into Zurich in this video. But apart from the hassle, the result is bad (crackles and pops).
      An external hardware mixer or an iOs mixer like AUM may seem a solution. However, I want to be able to finish my products (and save them) within my DAW (Korg Gadget 2 in this case). You should be able to add the individual effects from KG2 to each hardware synth and also let them pass through its Masterchannel and its limiter. If the hardware synth doesn´t pass through DeeMax, like the rest of the KG2 instruments, but remains some kind of parallel and dry instrument that plays along but is not mastered within KG2, the whole workflow doesn´t make much sense to me.

    I find it complicated while I'm using Taipei + Zurich. I can record on Zurich while playing with Taipei but I need to be on mixer view and the Rec button on the Zurich channel has to be on to be able to listen, that's fine. But in this scenario if I go to another gadget while Taipei and Zurich are doing their thing, the sound gets disabled, because it seems monitor for Zurich is only turned on when you are on mixer view....So I can't play some drums on London while Tapei sends midi to my HW synth while Zurich is letting me listen to it. Great video btw, you address some other issues too and let's not talk about sample management in gadget :/

    • @dustyny
      @dustyny 5 років тому

      Felipe Fernández Sobarzo how did you set this up? I can't find any explanation..

    • @felipefs106
      @felipefs106 5 років тому

      @@dustyny You need an audio interface that has midi ports and audio inputs, you can connect this using the apple camera kit using a powered usb hub(in my case). I'm using a midi controller to send midi to Taipei(using advanced midi settings), and then Taipei sends my midi to my HW synth. For this you have to go to Taipei and on the settings button, set the output to your Midi audio interface port. Then create a Zurich channel and set the audio input to the one you connected your external HW synth. After that, you have to go to the "mixer" view and set "Rec" to be able to monitor the sound your HW synth is making, but there's a problem... You can't go back to Taipei and start playing because this "Rec" option gets disabled once you change the view. So... You can only listen to your synth and record while on mixer view, it does work, you can record the midi, but everytime you change the view, monitoring will be disabled. Another way of capturing the sound from your HW synth would be using something like AUM and record there, while Taipei sends the midi data, after getting the audio just import it into Zurich. If someone else has a better method please let us know!

  • @KoshDukai
    @KoshDukai 5 років тому

    @Jakob Haq I think you mistakenly used "Knob # Dest" instead of "Knob # Value" when MIDI learning Taipei! :/
    Also, the MIDI "loop" issue, usually is solved by turning "Local Control" OFF on the synth, to keep the keyb+knobs part separate from its synth "engine", so its "controller" only sends out and the its synth only plays incoming MIDI.

    TAIPEI is another Korg failure. AUv3.... BM3 and Cubasis are both on the right track. If KORG would get their shit together and do exactly what BM3 has done in terms of all its features, then KG2 would be superior. However, until then (which will never happen bc Korg has its head up its ass) BM3 and Cubasis will always rule. Who cares at this point that Korg has 40 VI's when the app store has the same (and more) breadth of Synths.
