    The first, and ONLY correct explanation on how to hit a proper one hander on the internet. Completely corroborates my experience. Well done.

      You have to have great anticipation, foot work and hand eye coordination to consistently pull that off. The ball cant get high like on a kick serve then you have to slice. I’m 51 now getting back into tennis and my body isn’t doing what my brain is telling it to. I know I have a long way to go but it’s great exercise. You need so much energy to keep your legs moving and knees bent through the shot.

    Silver bullet. Backhand has always been my stronger shot but without the forehand power. Today cocked the non-dominant elbow up. Silver bullet! This shot is a laser with much more power and control on scale with the forehand. In majority unreturnable. Thank you!

    As I said before , after waching you couch, basically I have seen 4 videos counting this one and I really feel the total change in my tennis since playing it more than 20 years. It is incredible how a player can play without having the correct technique for so many years, even so I have won quite a few tournaments in my youth and now I also keep winning much less. I absolutely appreciate your help and your willingness to teach us how to improve our tennis. God bless you couch and I wish you earn a lot of money with your work.

    Great video!
    Raising the racquet high on the backswing really does add power because the racquet is accelerating rapidly down over a longer distance to add power to the shot.
    But you can also really feel your body coil even more fully with an increased stretch to your chest and hips when raising the racquet high. That increased coil also adds to the power of the shot.
    Finally , it also serves to raise the hitting shoulder up, while dropping the front shoulder down giving a pronounced shoulder tilt, and letting the body assume a "C" shape when viewed from the side. (It also promotes a slight hip tilt as well.)
    Reversal of the shoulder tilt/hip tilt (and C shape) is recognized as an important element in power in the serve (along with coiling/uncoiling and the push from the legs.)
    Reversal of the shoulder tilt/hip tilt (and C shape) is important in all groundstrokes as well, including the one handed backhand.
    The shoulder tilt (C shape) lets you:
    1. look over your front shoulder for a clear look at the ball.
    2. increase the distance the racquet travels for more raquet speed/power as you point out in the video
    3. allows for the racquet to be dropped almost parallel to the back fence
    4. allows fot the racquet butt to be pointed in an upward direction at the ball as the racquet fully falls down and starts to slightly go up
    5. promotes greater topsin, as this low to high motion is accentuated
    Too many videos on the one handed backhand only concentrate on the coil/uncoil. They usually ignore taking the racquet back high, even as the instructor actually does do it. But you often see the student struggling to replicate the shot because he misses the point of raising racquet and being able to look over a dropped front shoulder.
    Raising the racquet in the backswing to increase the shoulder/hip tilt (C shape) is the cherry on top that gets the swing started in a much more powerful swing, involving not just a longer swing with the arm, but using more big body muscles to power your shot!

    Excellent video. Two additional tips I would add to generate more power are to 1) use a semi-closed stance so you can coil your body even more and so your opponent can see your back, and 2) ensure that your non-dominant hand stays on the racquet as the racquet drops from the power position. This will help with the acceleration as well as ensuring you get under the ball for more top spin and keeping your dominant arm straight at contact (a bent arm loses power).

    The hitting hand, the idle hand and the racquet forming a kinematic chain, provides an amazing leverage when one hits a single handed backhand. What is interesting is that the momentum is generated very efficiently without putting too much stress on the hand muscles.
    Thanks a lot for these insights 🙏🙏

    My velocity on the backhand is where I want it but I struggle to consistently make solid contact. When I slow it down and shadow practice I can see I don't always keep the racquet face where I should. I end up slicing or putting unnecessary backspin on the ball. I use a proper backhand grip and mechanics until contact. At least I think I do. Any help from commenters would be appreciated. It's driving me insane.

      It's a slight adjustment with the angle of the strings. The easiest way to adjust it is to hit the ball a little more in front and open up slightly earlier for the crosscourt shot and hit the ball slightly later and stay side on for the DTL.

    My problem is that my technique is quite good on my one handed backhand.. aswell as my forehand.. and I can get alot of effortless power and spin and really hit consistently and can control my shots well and everything... when I practice or just hit with someone.
    But when I play points and matches it all changes alot.. I get tight and lose that loose grip and lose control and afraid to swing fast because the ball flies, and it becomes one big mess..
    What can I do to improve this coach Simon?

      Yoan is at college in the US, he had a bad first year, injured his shoulder just before the season began and then caught mono-virus so missed the entire first year.
      He's in London for the summer and I've worked with him a few times but he's lost a bit of passion for the game and I'm not sure if he'll find it again.
      That happens often when players go off to uni, they get freedom and start enjoying themselves too much.
      Time will tell if Yoan will fall into that trap also.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  5 років тому +4

      I would say that many players in the past have held their racket upright for their one handers, however I believe Wawrinka does this motion in the most effective way.
      I would say his one hander is probably the best of all time.

    Thanks for the explanation. I sometimes tend to think that like with the modern forehand, acceleration comes from a kind of „pulling“ on the racket. Doesn’t mean that the pendulum explanation is not true, too. I noticed that shortly before starting acceleration some players take back the racket a little more. I have tried it, too, in practice and to my feeling it worked and give me a little extra juice. However, the problem is that the timing is very crucial as it can result in a late contact point which is of course detrimental to your stroke technique. What is your opinion in this little extra pull back shortly before starting swinging foreword, Simon?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  2 роки тому +2

      If you can time it well, the extra pull will have a little rubber band effect on the swing. It can definitely help gain additional power

    It would be interesting to have an accelerometer placed on the tip of the racquet so you could experiment different BH and FH preparations to prove which one gives more acceleration/speed/momentum ( mass x velocity) at the contact point.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  5 років тому +2

      Not a big fan of it really, I see no benefit over taking the racket back like Wawrinka.
      To generate proper power, you would need it to go very far behind the back to have the space you need.
      This method is much, much easier for power.

    Hiya there Masters of the Masters!! First of all , have a great 2019! I've got a quick question, it's about the pressure of my fist when the impact comes. How should it be? Relaxed? steady? It's a challenge 4 me cuz I guess it's not the same all the time. Tx in advance. Sebashtian from Bs As

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  5 років тому +1

      Hi Sebashtian
      The tension in your hand would depend on the incoming ball and the shot you want to hit.
      Some shots require your hand to hold slightly tighter to control the racket head at contact, other shots you can be very loose with the grip.
      Try to always stay as relaxed as you can (for that shot) and experiment with it next time you play, see how loose you can hold the grip while still maintaining the control.
      All the best

    Hi Simon, excellent video. I have applied all the techniques, but recently I’ve felt that my topspin is not strong and mostly for my backhand shots, they come out flat. After my last match, my contender pointed out that my backhand is my weakness. Sometimes I think it would be better to change my single backhand to a double. What do you think?

    So what should be the back position for one handed return of serve?

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 роки тому +2

      There are three main swings on groundstrokes, one is the full length one, which is used when time is not an issue, then you have a medium swing, used when the ball is coming in powerfully on the baseline and you have a little less time, then the third one is the return swing, used on the return of course. It differs between a first and second serve return, but in general you want to block the ball with a very small backswing

      Hi
      On the one-handed backhand if you're using the eastern backhand grip or stronger, at the time of contact you'd be in an almost neutral position and then you would supinate the arm after contact to allow the windshield wiper motion to occur.

      @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I can only imagine what his backhand would look like with the modern equipment. When I was playing all the time, that's the kind of backhand I tried to emulate. I played mostly with wood rackets back then. Modern technology allows players to do now what they could not back then, mostly increasing topspin. Rosewall mainly hit slices. But I still think Rosewall's was the best, with Federer in a close second.
