    Helloooooo! I have been trying to get one of these in for review for ages. The appeal is obvious; a simple, no nonsense field watch with the right specs for $130USD. And the added bonus of American assembly. Quality on this one has far exceeded my expectations. And, if you just can't cope with quartz, they have an auto in the pipeline. Should be goo. Cheers, JOMW.

    My Vaer S3 Tradition is 36mm of absolute perfection!I don't know where to begin. The brushing, the sleekness, the vintage tool watch vibe with it's black/amber dial and it's flawless, high end finish. THEN there are it's specs/features: 36mm case, 20mm lugs, screw-in case back, screw in crown, 100m WR, sapphire crystal and (best of all) QUARTZ! This is the watch many of us have waited for our whole lives: A quartz Explorer/Smiths Everest. I LOVE THIS WATCH !! Well done, Vaer.

      I was just thinking that too. It doesn't have the American history like Timex, but I love the fact that the case is stainless steel instead of coated brass like many Timex watches have.

      You could say that (and definitely less TICK, I used to have one on my bedside and it drove me crazy). We're paying homage to brands with a bit more depth that the Weekender, but in the same vein (Hamilton, Walthan, Elgin)
      From a price / quality perspective, we're definitely in a different class than Timex - if you're in the market for a watch with 100m depth rating, sapphire crystal, and a Swiss Made movement, we're a great choice. Jody did an awesome job at highlighting the subtle niceties of our case in the review as well, and if you set the Timex and our watch side by side, the differences are very noticeable. Some people really care about these seemingly small features (that add up to make a much better watch) and are willing to pay a bit more to get them. In our eyes, $149 for a watch with all of the above is a small price to pay for something that will be on your wrist for years to come.
      There's also the knowledge that while Timex is shifting their operations out of the states and over the to Asia, we're doing our best to move in the opposite direction.

      I think some watch enthusiasts enjoy the mechanics behind it. It’s an old art form mechanical watches. I personally enjoy interacting with my watches and I really like the fact that someone had to figure out how to build this centuries ago. That took some serious smarts and ingenuity back then. Heck, it still does now. When I put on an automatic or hand wound watch I feel like I’m wearing something that has a heart. That said, I don’t mind quartz watches. Almost half of mine are. There are snobs and haters in every hobby unfortunately.

Though we definitely steer clear of using the term "luxury" to define out watches - this is an overused word in the watch industry that we believe should be reserved for the AP, Patek, Blancpain, Rolex, etc. of the world. We're just out to offer a high quality everyday watch that our owners can rely on (look great wearing).

Finally a 40mm case, 100m WR WITH a cool knurled screw down crown, and sapphire!!, that is actually at an affordable price point. I'm just a little underwhelmed by the dial options, especially the lack of lume on this colorway. A Fully lumed dial option would be pretty awesome. Absolutely LOVE the case design and its curves. Great review as always! Excited to see what they've come up with for the automatic.

    • @VaerWatches
      @VaerWatches 5 років тому

      Boldr is a great brand and their watches are solid (honestly a great deal for the money). That said, I think it's important to note that they're based in Singapore, and all of their watches and straps are made in China. There's nothing wrong with this (the Chinese make great watches), but it's important to understand that Boldr makes far more profit on every watch sold then we do, and that's because we've decided to sacrifice margin in order to offer American Assembled watches and Made in USA leather straps. Beyond that core differentiator (for those who could care less about source origin) I would argue that our feature set is comparable or superior to the Venture. Most of the features are similar, but in terms of differences, a review by UA-camr Relative Time found our BG-W9 lume to slightly outperform the Venture which looks to use C3, additionally, we use a screwdown crown. I'm pretty sure this not something that they offer on the Quartz line, and if you're someone who spend time in the water it should be a dealbreaker. The titanium case is cool, but I don't think it has any functional advantage over 316L. I do agree with your points on smaller watch sizes, while the realities of American wrists make 40mm the happy compromise, we are looking to introduce sub-38mm options later this year. If you have questions, or additional feedback please follow up here.

      @VaerWatches 5 років тому

      We're glad to hear you've been following us! Below is a bit more info on the auto.
      We're currently spending a lot of time in design. The watch will have domed sapphire, 100m water resistance, and exhibition caseback. The case will be very similar to the quartz in terms of fit and finish, though thicker to accommodate the automatic movement.
      We'll be using BGW9 and C3 lume across the board (depending on color scheme) and all watches will have lume hands and some form of lume on dial. The dials will be a mix of Heritage Design, a new design, and potentially Field.
      Our Japanese version will use a Miyota 9015 (thinner and higher bph than many of the cheaper versions out there that many brands use). Our Swiss version will use ETA (likely 2895 and will likely be "Swiss Made"). Retail for the Japanese will be in the range of $450, as the Miyota 9015 is significantly more costly than the Seiko NH35 and the Miyota 8215 that you see on most "affordable" autos. Swiss will retail in the range of $650-$750, as the ETA 2895 is another large bump in price. As we're still a small brand and we don't have any major investors, we'll likely be releasing the watch via crowdfunding where you can pick up one of the watches for 20%-30% off (depending on how early you jump on it).
      Let me know if you have any questions - it's going to be an incredible watch, and we're trying to gain user feedback as we develop it. Feel free to sign up for our newsletter on site to stay in the loop. -- Ryan | ryan@vaerdesign.com

    There's nothing wrong with quartz. It's way more accurate than mechanical, requires bugger-all servicing, can run non-stop for 10-years................. Why ride in a car, when you have horse and carriage?

    • @VaerWatches
      @VaerWatches 5 років тому

      We totally agree! One correction to your analogy though - technically the horse and carriage would be the automatic, and the car would be the quartz! @@VaerWatches What I meant was, the horse and buggy represents old, automatic watches, yet they are highly esteemed. And the car, much more modern, though not highly esteemed, the quartz.
      In other words, why should I want new, more reliable technology, when I can have old, unreliable technology.
      The reason it's facetious is, we all know a great mechanical movement is an amazingly brilliant, but ancient and temperamental, technology.

    Good timing Jody! I just got the black dial field watch 4 days ago. I must say , it looks great all black. I wanted a thin , light , water resistant, daily driver kind of watch. I looked at the Boldr , Hammy, Seiko , Bertucci and a few others. I ended up liking the 40mm size and case design of the VAER best , so I pulled the trigger on the black one. So far , so good. Quality seems on point and it’s so light it disappears on the wrist until you need it. Customer service seems to be pretty good as well. I contacted them about a packaging snafu ..(my watch was shipped sitting loose in the box , instead of on a strap, and fell out to the floor when I opened it). They got back to me and apologized , although a extra strap or two would have made me feel better about it. Quartz has its advantages , it’s always ready and takes beating. So I hope for many trouble free years with this one.

    Look like a normal watch. That being said, all you’re paying for is the “American Assembly”. Some people in the US enjoy falling for that bit of marketing. Wishing they could have thrown in a hand wind for that price. I wish they went for the look of the Seiko 5 SNK809 watch and threw in a sapphire, screw down crown, and some better lume. Honestly if I had a choice between the Hamilton or this, I would save up for the Hamilton. I think microbrands need to think a bit more out of the box. I guess there is a market for this watch if they’re making it 🤷‍♂️

    • @matthewrumain5188
      @matthewrumain5188 5 років тому +8

      Wali, I own both and they are two completely different watches. I bought the Vaer because I wear an SNK everyday at work (property maintenance) and wanted something a little thinner, more water resistant & something that looked good when I have to attend meetings with potential tenants, subcontractors, vendors, the ownership, etc. The Vaer looks the look but can also take some decent abuse. Don't be one of those people who "wishes" manufacturers would make your perfect watch for some bargain basement price. It doesn't exist.
      Also, buying a product assembled in the community you live in isn't a marketing scheme. I've corresponded with one of the owners of the company personally shortly after my purchase and I'd rather support a micro that's reinvesting their sales in cultivating a sustainable workforce locally rather than employing faceless factories abroad and paying pennies on the dollar so that you can think you have something 'luxury" or "unique". I agree with Jory here. I'd rather see Assembled in America on a watch from a new American brand than Swiss Made on a brand that the American ownership decided to sell rather than retain, retool and reinvent.
      PS. I know 2ppl who have send their Field Khaki Mechanical's back because they stopped running in less than a year of ownership. No thank you.

      Thank you for taking the time to comment - we'd be glad to share some more info! You’ll see from the below that I’m incredibly passionate about our design and brand. Of course to each their own opinion - a lot of people love our watches, so much so that they’re choosing to pick it up over other legacy brands, but that doesn't need to be the case for everyone. If you want to take the time, you can read through some of our hundreds of reviews - you’ll quickly see that many of our consumers are relatively sophisticated “watch nerds”, well beyond “falling for marketing”.
      While we're proud of our American Assembly, and it does add cost (that many are willing to pay for), our prices are a reflection of far more than that. Of course, I can’t speak for the Seiko’s and the Invictas of the world (I’m a Seiko fanboy and they’re value is impeccable), but the fact that you're under the perception that a small brand can and should offer a watch with sapphire crystal, hand wind, screw down crown, and 100m water resistance for our current $149 price illustrates that you either don’t understand the cost to build a watch with these components, or that you expect a brand to spend their time, energy, and money designing, manufacturing, and marketing a product only to pass it on to consumers with so little margin that the business can’t prosper.
      This brings up a deeper question of the kind of margins consumers expect modern watch brands to make. While the Daniel Wellingtons of the world are ripping consumers off with ridiculous margins and junk products, our margins are already on the cusp of what is feasible - we’re a two man team working to grow a quality watch brand - we have thousands of happy watch customers and we want to give them the fairest price possible for a high quality while still making enough money to grow the brand and spend time on new product development. I can also tell you that over the past 3 years we have consistently increased our product costs to deliver a higher quality product, while keeping the product price relatively stable (lume upgrade to BGW9, upgraded case, addition of Horween Leather, shift to Swiss Made Ronda 715, shift to American Assembly, etc)
      On the value note, what we’ve learned over time is that a watch (or any product for that matter) is absolutely worth more than just the sum of it’s features. If you’re looking for the most features for the price, of course go pick up a Seiko 5 - the value there can’t be beat! If features to price ratio was the only factor for watch consumers, than anyone would be a fool to buy a Rolex Submariner when the Seiko SKX007 exists. For many, design and quality carry a different value beyond spec count and stats, and there is a reason that every watch owner on the planet doesn’t own only a Seiko 5 or a Seiko SKX007.
      Always glad to chat more if you want to reach out via our website! Thank you, Ryan

    Just don’t get the ‘field’ watch thing at all. To me the Hammy and this look like an old Timex I used to wear as a teenager and that was a very long time ago. Outdoors it’s a Diver and quartz it’s a G-Shock if you want something really tuff.

    If I was looking at quartz field watch I would definitely get a Timex with its Indiglo backlight for third of the price of this vaer... Swiss ronda quartz? Who cares, might as well be a chinese $3 movement, it will do the job the same.

    • @VaerWatches
      @VaerWatches 5 років тому +3

      While Timex with Indiglo is great, they're just different propositions in terms of quality, fit, and finish. It all depends on what you look for and what you appreciate. If you have a Timex case and our case side by side, you'll see drastic differences in the case quality and finish - to some, that's important.
      On the movement note - we completely disagree. In building thousands of watches and working with other brands, we've absolutely found that movement quality does matter with quartz. Failure rate over time is reduced massively when you choose to step up and get a higher quality quartz movement. Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can provide any additional info.

    Thank you, Jody, for the review, and I enjoyed your intro, please don't jump to the next video had me laughing. I know I don't always agree with you on pricing things and think I am harsh, but if we all thought the same thing we would all have the same watch. That is why there are so many as people have different tastes. I watch all of your videos regardless. I like thin lightweight watches. I don't care for nato straps. I know some love them. I also agree the leather one it comes with it really too thick for the watch. Loads of strap makers who will make a nice thin leather band that will fit well. I was going to say it is nice and easy to read and reminds me of wall clocks when I was in grade school. Then I saw someone also wrote that. I guess many of us had to see those wall clocks all day long back in time when we were in grade school. I only like quartz when it is accurate. Seiko 9f from my research is the most accurate quartz movement, the bad news is I have only seen that with Grand Seiko which are not cheap to buy. They are in the thousands of USA dollars which is out of my range. I hope they will use them with less expensive watches. I do appreciate the mechanical movements more and like a sweeping hand more than the Quartz watches.

    I love the idea of a rugged, water resistant outdoorsman watch that you can dress up or down. I also was looking for a bauhaus style watch with timeless looks. The Vaer seems like a dressier and more durable watch than the Timex Expedition. It’s also more rugged than a Nomos or Junkers and much less expensive than the Junghans. I’m a bit surprised that they haven’t pursued the backpacker/hiker market a bit more. This watch seems to fit the Southern California, mountain to sea, lifestyle. It hits a sweet spot in the market at the sub $150 price point. I think they have a winner on their hands. I ordered myself a Classic Light. Can’t wait to get it on wrist and experience it for myself.
