I'm an avid fungi nerd in Indiana, USA growing inside and outside. I've collected and grown around 30 cultures and cloned/preserved at least 10 local wild species. Mushrooms totally changed my health and my life a few years ago. Managed to Incorporate them into most of my garden and flower beds. Nothing better than eating food that was harvested minutes before eating
Hello David, Thank you for the content, i must be honest, i am too make some mistakes when i try to cultivate mushrooms in my garden. But now i am confidente that this time i will suceed. I heard 10 Mickeys in your video :D good luck for everyone!
Started Shataki logs 2 years ago and they are steady growing. Was going to get winecap spawn this spring because I had put a good bit of wood chips in my garden pathways. Lo and behold my garden was full of winecaps without me buying any spawn. Thanks Weedy love all your videos watch them with my 6 year old.
I'm not in Australia so I'm not entering, I just came to talk about MUSHROOMS!! I'm in Texas, where it's super hot, not in the desert, but still, it's 113°f, 45°C, in Summer. Probably a lot like the conditions in Australia! We have a lot of oak trees here to both feed the mushrooms & keep us in the shade! And that's where my mushroom growing goes on - but NOT in the heat of the summer. The other 3 seasons of the year are definitely mushroom growing seasons tho!! I've been growing them (outside) from mushroom blocks for 3 years now, and I absolutely LOVE gardening with mushrooms!! I also have Wild Lions Mane growing out of a few Oak Stumps fir the past 4 years, which is just the coolest thing!! That's what got me into the whole growing mushrooms at home scene! The blocks are just plastic bags stuffed with finely chopped wood, usually oak, then inoculated with mushroom spores. The places that grow them commercially do all that jazz for me! Then they grow their own mushrooms right from the blocks. After the blocks have fruited one round of very large mushrooms, the commercial companies throw the blocks away. They do that because the blocks will not produce as much anymore. So they don't waste their resources on them anymore. But the blocks DO STILL fruit!! (The mushroom itself is called "the fruit".) And this is where I come in! The commercial companies leave their used blocks outside their door, and people like me come by and scoop them up, as needed! I bring them home, place them in a nice spot in my yard that they like, I give them a little more food & water, and bingo-bango, I've soon got mushrooms of my own!! I also slice them up and put them out in the sun because like this video mentions, mushrooms synthesize vitamin D straight from the sun! Actually, mushrooms and humans are the only 2 things on this earth that are known to be able to synthesize vitamin from the sun!! So mine always go out for a suntan! Back to the blocks- The blocks will fruit once or twice for me, then I turn them out into my garden spaces & mix with the soil. Sometimes I leave them on top as a mulch. They make THE MOST fantastic mulch! The whole process is really great for everyone! The commercial companies get the biggest harvests, but us gardeners, we still get quite a bit of fruit too! And by taking the blocks and eventually adding them to our gardens, we keep the used blocks out of the landfill. It's a win-win!! I also like growing mushrooms bcuz I can do this straight through our mild winters! Mushrooms seem to like the short, overnight freezes we get too! Those cold events often start blocks fruiting all over again! It's just SO AWESOME!! My neighbors love it too bcuz I often share the bounty & even the little kids get interested and end up eating them for dinner! Which is just great!
In my town our local growers do the same, so I took a few and added them to new mountain ash wood chips… going to try to get them to fruit. So far so good, the mycelium have been spreading!
I've just started no dig garden as clay soil and always wanted to grow my own veg n fruit garden. I've 3/4 acre garden. Had compost heap building up 3 years. Then come across your channel, I'm obsessed and loving learning, I'm in uk.. mushrooms I've to learn to grow yet and been looking at kits. ❤
"Oh, Mickey you blow my mind.! Oh, Mickey Oh, Mickey.! Your so fine you Blow my mind Hey Mickey Hey Mickey.!" I counted 11 "Mickey" Thank you for such interesting content once again Weedy as we are looking forward to the next. Happy Gardening ya all.
Fantastic video Weedy and Mickey, I have been thinking about delving into the world of shrooms for a while now, thanks for all the useful information, the competition is probably over but I am only just getting a chance to catch up, but I think I heard Mickey 11 times :)
Mickey’s name Prior to the competition being mentioned: 1 written 2 spoken After the competition was mentioned: 1 written 9 spoken Total: 2 written 11 spoken I figured, if I really wanted to win mushrooms, I’d better be as accurate as possible. Good job, Weedy. I’ve learned a lot from this episode. I thought my last little acre mushrooms were a lost cause, because I took such good care of them, and they just would not flush. I chucked the box outside to use for mushroom compost… I went out one day a few weeks ago, and it flushed with some beautiful chocolate oysters. They tasted so damn good. Nature always finds a way. ♥️
What a fantastic and informative video! I have wanted to grow my own mushrooms for some time now and it was great to see how it’s done. I counted you saying Mickey 11 times, so have my fingers and toes crossed for this one 😉
Haha epic way to engage your viewers! I tried to remember all the tricky stuff (Vit. D, protein comparison, the substrates… 😂) but you choose “Mickey”… lol… I counted 11, but I’m going back just to make sure… Been wanting a book on Ozzy mushrooms for ever because we have so many popping up in our back yard… and Lions Mane!!! Mushroom steaks, love them - excellent in a Rendang (instead of meat).
11 Mickeys. Great vid, learned a lot. Mushroom growing is something I’ve wanted to add to my repertoire and garden but was put off with all the sterilising that was required. This looks like a much easier method. If I don’t win a mushroom kit I will try the sugar cane method in a bucket, if that’s successful I’ll try and find a space in the garden. Question: If growing mushrooms inside how do you prevent fungus gnats?
What a gift this video was. I now feel confident enough to grow mushrooms. Thank you Weedy and Mickey. I have the pile of fresh wood chip ready😅 Weedy said Micky 10 times 😊
12 had to enjoy watching it twice🙏🕉️ All good information and I’m off to Bunnings to get some sugarcane mulch 🧬🍄🐓 I’m in NSW so hope I’m close to the number of Mickeys
Always entertaining and informative, you are such a fun guy 🙂. I now fertilize my garden with bacteria, drink fire cider and soon will be growing mushrooms. Thanks Weedy. BTW I counted 12 'Mickeys'
Red pepper flakes sprinkled on top of your mushroom beds will keep the critters out. They don't like getting their hands and mouths burnt and generally will completely avoid the bed
What a GR8 timely "infotorial " Weedy! I just made my first harvest from one of Mickie's little home Oyster mushroom kits that I bought in Aldi. Learnt so much from Micky ..... brilliant timing! I counted 11 times that you said his name! 😊😍😊🍀💪
You said Mickey's name 11 times and it was written down on the screen twice 😁 Thanks for another great video Weedy. I am 100% going to be getting some mushrooms from Little Acre Mushroom Farm after watching this, whether I win this comp or not 😅
BUSH TURKEY BUSH TURKEY TRICK I saw a great idea online. A gentleman took a long Pole like bamboo and affixed dried up bramble bush 'lollipop' thorns on top. He stuck them in the ground near the plants he wanted to keep the animals away from
Thanks for another great production Weedy! Thank you also for mi 2024 Astrological Calendar and Moon Planting Guide from your online store mate... That thing is CHOCK full of info!! I've had greater success in mi garden with this, mi new bible. Gratefully appreciative Weedy! If you've never planted according to moon cycles, give it a go, you'll be pleasantly amazed with increased germination success and enhanced growth quality.
Thanks Weedy that has given me confidence on the straw bales I inoculated last week (blue and yellow oyster). I notice the mycelium started growing this morning so fingers crossed in a few weeks I will have mushrooms, that is if they do not drown first. Based in Somerset UK and we are having LOTS of rain which in theory should be a benefit. I have not much success with attempts in wood chips so decided to go with bales this time.
Try growing bamboo in ur garden... looks like u have good weather over there for crumpling bamboos. Once it is established u will find thousands of uses.
Perfect Friday night gardening with Weedy and Costa and friends earlier I am ready to garden over the weekend now. Fantastic thanks David I needed some inspiration.
Heads up! We can only send within Australia folks!
Not cool.Disappointed
@@AprilHannah-fl3zf nothing I can do to be cooler because of quarantine laws, but you can buy them in your country I’m sure
