Completely agree with your thoughts. My family knew someone who passed young. One day my mom was crying about it and said "they say everything happens for a reason, but what could the reason possibly be for this?" and ever since then I've questioned.
"Everything happens for a reason" is a coping mechanism that people use to deal with the confusion of life. It's a belief that there is order and structure in the world. It's a belief that someone, somewhere, is in control. Believing in control is preferable to believing in chaos. No one wants to live in a world where absolute chaos rules and nothing makes sense. Because that would be even more depressing.
everything happens for a reason is an expression of faith in the world, or something, yes, give space to grieve, grieve however long you want, as long as its not forever. and i see this quote as just a vehicle to healing past that initial mourning or grieving phase, until you see the beauty in life and living again, doesn't necessarily mean that the reason will come or that you will ever see it, and you shouldn't spend your time looking for that reason either. but you will find abundance in reasons to keep going at that point, you will be speaking from a better place

Many things we categorize under the dubious label conventional wisdom simply do not hold water. Like our common sense perception of color. Seems very obvious right, but try having a conversation about color with a philosopher or physicist, they'll tell you color doesn't exist. It's a figment. Or this popular saying: "opposites attract." But try applying that to real relationships, to your own life and what do you see: people come together, get married and relate to one another based on commonalities and mutual interests, not differences
also I feel the semantics are being misinterpreted- re: everything happens for a reasonable reason- clearly untrue! For every cause there is an effect- science and also not immediately caused by an event
