    Meyer did actually write some interesting characters she just lacks the skill to get it across or the wherewithal to know when to present certain things as negative.
    Take Edward. He's a telepath so he knows everything someone is thinking. He spent the first decade or whatever of his life drinking the blood of humans who were about to/ did commit terrible crimes, and justified his murder of those people as such. But in doing so, he would obviously have such a god complex, deciding who lived and died. He eventually stopped because he didn't want to kill anymore, but that's such an interesting idea l. Now in the books, he has, for years, been surrounded by teenage girls fawning all over him and teenage boys being jealous, so he hears all of that unfiltered adoration or hate knowing that he wouldn't be able to fit in with any of them anyway, so he gets a superiority complex and you see that with how he treats Bella- as a child because compared to him, every teenager he meets is. If he could read Bella's mind, I don't think he would have been half as interested in her, he would either have killed her or just left Forks because by knowing her thoughts she's just as vapid as the rest of them but extra tasty.
    Being a telepath, no one has secrets from him. He isn't allowed a boundary because he can hear everyone's unfiltered thoughts about him, so I'm sure he would eventually slip into not thinking boundaries were important at all.
    So now you've got a character with a god complex, a superiority complex, and a complete lack of understanding of boundaries because of it all.
    What a fascinating character this could have been if Meyer had gotten Bella to make Edward realise these things and be a better person because of it.

    as cool as it would have been to have a diverse cast for the Cullens, it would have been incredibly awkward with one of them being a confederate soldier

    • @hayleybartek8643
      @hayleybartek8643 2 роки тому +73

      Not sure how awkward that would have been. Immortality and shared burdens might mean more than being on different sides of a war where everyone else is long-dead. And Jasper left the Civil War just to be thrown into another one, so maybe that gave him a certain perspective on war itself.
      Then again, the American Revolution vampire was singing the same song against the Volturi as he did the Brits. But oppressive hierarchies exist no matter what you eat.
      Meyers should have written her stories about the side characters.

    One of the BEST things Meyer added when writing midnight sun is that in the baseball scene when James, Laurent, and Victoria are chatting with the Cullens, jasper is subtly shielding Bella and Alice from them by controlling their moods and making them seem utterly, mind-numbingly boring so the nomads will glance at them and move on quickly. It only fails because of the gust of wind that blows Bella's scent towards James but wow I thought it was such a good detail for her to include

    One of the most baffling things about the Twilight franchise is that every single vampire who isn't Edward has a much, much more compelling background than him. You know, the cool asshole that has done horrible things becomes better after falling in love with some beautiful girl (nevermind that Edward dosent really change all that much though the story).So, because he has to fit the archetype he cant have a particular complex story like the others do.

      @noelbernabe8704 2 роки тому +7

      I honestly don't believe Edward is uninteresting. I think his backstory as a mind reading vampire who went on a vigilante period is as interesting as anyone else. Really the difference is we got 4 books and 5 movies focused on him, to the point where he was ramemd down our throats. THat in contast to characters like Carlisle or Jasper getting 1 chapter exploring their history.
      If Twilight focused on Carlisle instead of Edward for 4 straight books, we'd probably see people argue Edward was more interesting and deserved more focus.
      I think the only character that is legitimately uninteresting is Bella... but that's sort of by design. Lead female protagonists in YA fiction are designed to be blank slates, so teenage girls can self insert themselves.

It's absolutely horrible, inexcusable in the current era, and is something I had to consciously change within my worldview for several years. While the group of people five years younger than me are actively fighting against that notion, the people five years older still cling to the idea that everywhere is like Utah (which is a HORRIBLE thought).

Vampires come in lots of different flavors, but when they don't need to drink human blood, can move around in the daytime, are unharmed by sunlight and have goddam SUPERPOWERS, then they really aren't vampires anymore, are they? Dracula wasn't hurt by daylight and could walk around in it, and also had superpowers (scale vertical walls, super strength, mind control, etc.). Plus, a lot of more modern stories with "good" vampires in them have them drinking animal blood instead of human blood; it's like the de facto way to signal that the vampire is one of the good ones (if not the only good one). Sparkling in sunlight was a new take, but it fits for a romance story and isn't inherently bad; just different, which some people may like and others may not.

As I recall, Pierce Brown said he was rejected by over 120 agents before finally someone accepted Red Rising. For a little context, I was 12 years old when I read the first book back in 2007, and I was a die hard fan until I was about 15. I really loved these books back then because:
    1) I was a literal child.
    2) Because there was so much manipulation, emotional abuse, and gaslighting I had to deal with from my own mother.
    I never saw the actions of the characters as problematic because a lot of it was pretty normal to me. I also think I rationalized their behavior because that what I had to do with my own mom. It’s been over a decade since I considered myself a fan, but I wasn’t until your videos that I realized I had forgotten SO MUCH about these books. It was really shocking to listen to your summaries about the books I used to love as a child, through the eyes of an adult.
    I definitely agree that the books were wish fulfillment for people who had bad self esteem. I used to dream about running away from home, and starting over. Plus, finding a hot dude who was obsessed with me would’ve been a nice bonus 🤣🤣🤣

Does that make it better? No, but it would've made it interesting if Edward was trying and failing to stay away from her. Or make it so that Edward, due to being able to mind-read can't really shut off thoughts he hears so he's always bombarded. Have you thought to fo Pratical Magic? I've just read the book and it's perfect for lost in abdication and if the bones of the story wasn't there I would say it's an In Name Only candidate. It's a beloved halloween and comfort movie in my family and I was excited when I learned it was a book but was a bit disappointed with how different the two were, especially the ham-handed romance thrown in at the end, the book is definitely a product of its time but it's mind-boggling how they cherry picked details and made a(in my opinion) descent movie.

    I just got to the part about Meyer wanting all the Cullens to be white. As a hopeful writer myself, I will admit I imagine most of my characters as white but I've often thought if it was ever adapted and they wanted to cast someone of color, or if it was animated and they wanted to change the race of one of my characters, I would be absolutely fine with that.

      Speaking of book 2, it was especially bad about this. I knew from the book that the second film was primarily about a moody teen love triangle with a side-trip to Italy tacked onto the end. But the trailer prominently featured the stuff from Italy. Much like the final book itself, it built up the Volturi as this great and terrible threat that fizzled out after a few a strong words. My dad, who had only seen the trailer, was sorely disappointed and even a little miffed at the false advertising.
