    Thanks! I have had a less than enjoyable time trying to navigate the 5100. The manual sucks, so I'm very glad people are posting these videos.

    Regarding D-Rats settings....this is the only radio I've had that does not require GPS settings to be turned off. You missed a critical point in settings, though. You have to go into CI-V and change the output to DV Data. Here are the settings from Dstarinfo.com:
    Using a Data Cable: Function>Data Speed=9600, DV Set>DV Data TX=Auto
    Also, if you happen to have Bluetooth in this radio you can operate D-Rats without a cable over Bluetooth. It's just another serial port on your computer. I've done this on a few computers---works great.

    Thanks a lot for the video. I just ordered a 5100A deluxe and just getting in to digital. Very informative and to the point. I used to live in Forsyth county and would get on the local nets. N4NYS.

    You can save all the reflectors and their commands so when you are in the "To:" field, you can use the knob rather than punching the screen. One thing I love about my ID-51A+!

    Thx for the tutorial. I still have a bit more to learn before I'm ready to try D-Star. Just got my ID-5100a yesterday and will replace my ft-857d for use on vhf/uhf as I have a need to learn to use D-Star for the covid-19 net here in Georgia. w0jwd Dahlonega

      After a few years of figuring things out, the magic happens in the "UR" field. That's the field (of the 4 DStar fields) that gives all the commands to the repeater. Assuming you are using the same actual repeater most of the time, that's the only DStar field that changes. In the newer Icom radios like this one, they made it more intuitive by calling it "To" and "From" but the actual DStar field are "MyCall" (your actual callsign that probably never changes) UR (your call---the field for repeater commandes to link, unlink etc) Rpt1 (repeater you are using via RF) and Rpt2 (used if you are using the gateway to go beyond your local repeater). That's all there is to basic DStar.

    Im looking for a radio for my Jeep, I am so new to this, that I am still waiting on my call sign, passed my tech test this past monday, what is d-rats? I love in OKC and I know we have D-star antenna, is the D Star Antenna the same a s a reflector? If this is too green of a question, feel free to ignore it and or send me somewhere I can study up on this, I am looking for a radio for the jeep that is easy to use, but still leaves room for me to grow as I learn more. Thanks in advance and thanks for walking us through some of the functions of this radio. Thanks again, Dale

    Once you are connected to a reflector how do you actually have a conversation with someone? How does that work? I've seen countless videos discussing setup, but once setup what do you then do? I've been listening to an apparently busy reflector (REF006B) all evening and haven't heard a single person say a word. WTF? How do you talk to someone?

    If you are not using hotspot, Are you using antenna to hit local Dstar repeaters ? How far is to far ?

  • @rpgiuliani
    @rpgiuliani 7 років тому

    Very good video. However, some repeater owners do not allow the repeater to be unlinked or changed. It's set to be permanently linked to a particular reflector. To causes many users to need to buy their own hotspots or can cause some hams to stay away from DStar. Thank you for making the video.

    • @marvinmealer4993
      @marvinmealer4993 7 років тому

      rpgiuliani That is correct. I try to remind everyone to check the policy of the repeater before attempting to link and unlink. At the very least, the user should ask on the air before attempting to make a change.

    • @mikemandell132
      @mikemandell132 5 років тому

      I have found it has become more common to either leave repeaters unlinked by default or automatically unlink after a period of no activity. Some used to stay perma-linked to busy reflectors and the repeaters burned up.

    Question. What about the connection from the radio to the pc for use with DRATS

    • @mikemandell132

      You can use either the optional Bluetooth module and connect to the computer via BT or a data cable. The advantage of RT systems alluded to is the ORANGE RT systems program cable is also a data cable and works for D-Rats as well as programming. He did not mention you need to change the data port mode to DV Data for D-rats to work. Also, you can leave GPS ON in this radio. It has no effect on D-Rats---only on this radio that I'm aware of.

    I have been into police scanners since I was 9 yrs old. This year my local public safety agencies had elected to go to encrypted channels. Hence this put an end to my hobby. Now my Whistler 1098 and Home patrol I are nothing more than expensive paperweights. You guys know the two scanners I mentioned are not cheap ones. I am looking into getting my Tech license. Starting a new hobby is always a challenge at first. I am want this radio. Having a tech license to start out with can I use this ham radio ? If I can't what do you guys recommend ?

    • @mikemandell132
      @mikemandell132 5 років тому

      With a tech license you can use the radio to its full potential. It's just UHF/VHF and a tech license covers that. D-Star gives you a little of the HF long-distance advantage without the General license and more elaborate HF setup. It's fun to be mobile and talk to a wide area or distant location, even though the internet is linking you to distant contacts.

    Click bait! contrary to the name of the video, it is about linking reflectors - not repeaters - LAME!

    • @mikemandell132
      @mikemandell132 4 роки тому

      Linking repeaters is nearly identical. However, make sure neither repeater is already linked or some listeners will only hear half of some conversations. Linking repeaters is not done as much because so many repeaters are normally linked to a reflector already. I've done it, though. Same process as this.
