Taylor Larson mixing Jason Richardson guitars

- With a blend of three guitar tones per side (low gain, high gain and mid gain), this Jason Richardson song presents some pretty tricky metal guitar mixing challenges-- here's how Taylor tackles them!
The session is Jason Richardson's "Fragments," ft Luke Holland, Mark Holcomb and Lukas Magyar.

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, The Black Dahlia Murder, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Chelsea Grin, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Meshuggah and Bring Me The Horizon - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!
The compressor settings are essentially transient shaping, so taking the wave from being a bit of a sausage, to adding a slight volume peak at the start of the sound.
from this ====== to this ^======
Makes a difference, think how drums start really loud and drop quickly in volume.
I love everything Joey says, I don't understand why he isn't ever miced up.
IT TOOK ME UNTIL 9:41 TO REALIZE THAT FLUFF IS THERE
"I'm not even comfortable unless this is on." hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha
I still remember this video. He didn't mixed anything he just showed the different plugins that he used to get the sound of the mix. Very very informative but no hands on mixing.
I usually find Taylor's videos pretty boring and kinda hit & miss.
Its weird seeing Fluff and Jason just sitting there
It's like Taylor is just speeding through everything and everyone else is pulling him back to describe what he's doing and give information that actually educational xD
I like how Fluff is chilling in the background
Finally, thank you guys!
10:25 fluff was not havin it 😂
Are each guitar track(high, med, and lo gain) a different take? Or do you just track a left and right, then duplicate for low and med gain? Thanks!
There's 2 takes total. 1 left, 1 right.
@@eyalleviurm THANK YOU. My god, I've been asking this for so long, and here's the answer...2 years old.
Thats awesome ! I really regret not signing up last month
FLUFF!!!!
10 minutes in to mixing and chill and Fluff gives you that look 2:53
Doug Payne what look would u give?
Just TSSAWHAHAH ALLTHE TIME 🤘🏻🎸
I'm confused by the tip at 1:18... shouldn't the daw automatically compensate for the delays added by any single plugin by default? I don't see the point of cloning the same eq if bypassed...
I could understand if it wasn't bypassed since the delay compensation doesn't always work but still weird.
Delay Compensation in ProTools is notoriously buggy and different plugins still have their own internal latencies that Delay Compensation doesn't fix. He did the right thing.
Eyal Levi thanks for the info man, I know Pro Tools can be a world on its own sometimes. is this something worth doing with every plugin whenever the phase relationship is crucial?
Just FYI, you will find issues with internal plugin latencies in any DAW. This is something to always listen for. It's just compounded in Pro Tools because the Delay Comp has a mind of it's own.
Eyal Levi I usually shy away from adding effects on channels with extremely correlated signals, now I know I have to be even more careful with that, thanks.
So many great people in one room
I think all of these series should be like it's at 10:00 mark. :)
I like this one... (doesn't say what it is)... moves on... 0_o
Great trick for modern metal, in my opinion. So did Jason record his guitar tracks 6 times?
2 total one left one right. then just layered with different gain, eq etc
Great video, a real inspiration! Please, what amp head is that one behind him?

I wonder what the raw sound was
What is that piece of gear next to his midi controller on the desk. With the big blue knob
It controls the volume of his monitors.
Side widener, it's mono compatible.
So I’m a little confused, did he clone the same guitar takes with different gain setting or did he do completely different take with different gain setting?
I wonder if he was that stoned when he mixed the record.
Nah he don’t smoke. 🚭
Song?
Did he track it 6 times? Or is it double tracked and copied to 6 tracks
Why did he add an 18k shelf farther along in his chain when we filtered at 8k already. I got the 8k shelf for the peak but not understanding the 18k one
that's not the main purpose of that EQ. It's just a preset that they made in 2012 for P2, the main purpose is the 4k dip and the 2k boost.
whats the name of that EQ plugin? it only says the company. also Tone Forge is Running on a bus? so the incoming signal is dry? how exactly does this work? im on logic pro x so i usually put all of my Guitar effects including tone forge or BIAS on the regular channel strip. is it better to run it through a bus?
As far as I know FabFilter does not add any latency
OMG Fluff!
Those 3 tones per side are different takes or the same take ? Thanks !
By what the tracks look like, it seems like they're different takes.
they're different takes - he talks about how to deal with phase
actually i was wrong! its the same performance - the phase correction is needed due to blending tones
Makes sense. Thanks!
Can you explain this in a bit more detail? how many Takes, and how many are duplicate of the main take? also which ones are Overdrive distortion and clean. i assume they are all hard panned or no? im beginning to record guitar and want to start on the right foot! any details are appreciated thanks!
would love a "mono-compatible" shirt
So when you're recording you layer different levels of gain for each channel of guitars (which are panned left and right for each layer.) And does that help the guitars tighten up? And in what way does that benefit the mix?
Carlos Asuncion makes sense, Thanks for the input!! I'll definitely be using that... one more thing are there or is the certain levels they should be set at to provide the most clarity? Or you just mix and fix it in the mastering faze?
Hey Carlos, glad it's working out for you. I was wondering, did he record 3 tracks? One for low gain, hi and clean, or is one duplicated?
Yeah I think I get it now, thanks! So would you do that twice for left and right? Or just the once?
Great idea about the clean compression and brighter IRs. Just need to find some good IRs now... haha
That's really great advice, thanks a bunch! I downloaded Gods Cabs and will have a play around with your recommendations.
Carlos Asuncion So excited to try this, the idea never crossed my mind. It's excellent.
I feel like the guitars are wayyyyyyyyyy too bright. When he took that high boost off it sounded so much more defined.
Add a bass and some drums and you may think otherwise.
he hates guitars. LOL?? in fact, he hates his sound setup, his devices. something is corrupting his audio chain.
nowadays every PC or laptop can corrupt audio chain and make sound hollow and fizzy.
he never realizes how blind he is, until he listens to clear sound. then he will FEEL the guitar rather then listen to the hollow sound image of it.
Yea but the context isn’t there. There’s synths and lot of other information competing.
my baby Fluff
Why does he have so many tracks playing
40 horas de mezcla + 22310 VECES ESCUCHAR LO MISMO xD
I hated the recordings. Nothing compared to the mix when he was with boo
dude. how tipsy were you when you made this?
Not at all
I understand the importance of clarity but sometimes it seems like people add so much shit to the mixing process it just becomes ridiculous.
it's sad when you can't just play guitar naturally and find you're own tone without people judging what is good and bad...just be yourself...
I have this plugin, then this and after that , this. I have not learned anything. He doesnt explain anything. WTF?
That's because he isn't explaining us, he's explaining people who already know their stuff, who know what's going on.
I'm not going to say anything about the mixing but... I can't help but to feel that this kind of metal is so sterile and machinatic, it's like listening to a computer. Why don't you just program a computer to do those chugs? You can't make it sound that way live anyway. I guess not many people will agree with me.
ogdooh I think it’s mainly due to guitar players trying to sound like computers
all this processing...
Thanks for watching! You should just realize that there’s no right or wrong amount of processing... as long as it sounds good, it is good, you know? So remember to keep an open mind!
definitely sounds fine to me, no complaints there. it just makes my vst performance meter run for the hills
Hipaased at 150 but cutting at 50? Ok..
Well he said that it accentuates the impact of the filter, so you get a more dramatic loss of the sub frequencies
Patriot 76 weird, but it sounds great
