I actually found a really nice bokeh effect on my sony a6000 with only the kit lens. Set the focus mode to manual and zoom in fully 50mm and then fully focus. Just make sure to have the focus assistant off for this.
Thank you so much. I am about to get my first a6400 and keep wondering about how to get the hookeh effects. I am visual person too so this been super helpful.
I just got my first cam the a6400 and I found out about the kit lens with the E 3.5 lens, I am guessing that is what it means, I am totally new at this and found your video because I wanted that Bokeh. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for explaining this so easily and very intimidating!! haha I just got my sony a6400 and have lots to learn about aperture an fstop but this helped!!
THANKS! This was a huge help. Now I understand why someone suggested that I get a different lens for my A6400. The aperture is the issue. I can't go below f3.5. Your visual adjustments were helpful for comparison. 🙌
THANK YOU for putting things into layman's terms in this video! I'm a bit of a visual learner and very often need things simplified to fully understand them. This video is incredibly helpful!
Thank you for this video. I'm very new to this camera and photography stuff. I purchased the 6400 and was trying to figure out how to shoot pics with a blurred background. I'm shooting with the kit lens. Which Sony lens would be best for shooting pics to get the blurred background effect? You mention the Sigma 16mm f1.4 - is this lens for video or video and photography?
Thank you for the vidéo Brandon! Really useful. I have the Sony Fx30. And found a lens with an aperture of 1.2 (TTArtisan Objectif APS-C F/1.2 50 mm Mise au point manuelle Compatible avec appareils photo Sony E) which is really cheap. Would you recommend it?
Can you hook that camera on the computer, so you need a lense for the bokah effect? .... can you plug it in your computer and stream and have a stand to put on top of the computer or how does that set up works?
Hey Brandon thanks for the tip! I'm currently shooting with my iPhone and I was wondering if, bokah subject aside, you'd recommend the 6400 as an overall camera to shoot video. I know it's kind of a cheap option compared to super professional gear out there, but a thousand buck it's a lot for me
1K isn’t cheap but coming from an iPhone you are getting a HUGE step up. A6400 is a badass camera even for a entry level pro user. The pictures, video- 1080p AND 4K is really awesome. If you can afford it I chose this over anything close in price range. Love it.
Great video brother! I have a different question for you...for me, when I put my hands in front of my face like you do, the focus shifts from my face to my hands and vice versa...really annoying. (i have an A6400 also) But in your video, it seems like the focus is on your face even when you put your hand in front of your face...What are your settings to do that?
Rishi AKR it’s a little bit tricky because the Sony menu system is so confusing but I have the face detection off when I’m recording talking head videos. I have it on zone focusing. I’m gonna make a video about this.
Brandon Boswell looking forward to it. I also figured out during my research that if i am plugged into an external monitor, face detection does not work in that scenario.
I got a Sony 6400 with a 30-35mm f1.4 oss lense. To have that background blurr effect what do I do? Do I have to go in settings and adjust something or do I use that dialog on the lense that turns anti clockwise or clockwise?
Set your mode in aperture priority then rotate that dial in anti clockwise which will reduce the aperture number or else you can just zoom and get the blur at higher f number too
Brandon thank you so much for the valuable explanation. Would we get a super blurry background at f1.4 in case the object is extremely far away from the background? Let's 300 meters away
Is there a lens for sony that can select a color while bluring out the background ? desaturate the color background ? so I don't have to do this in post? for VIDEO????
Sorry. Only way to desaturate the background would be in post. There may be a preset in the Sony camera but that’s not something I’m familiar with yet. I’ll look into it.
Are you a video shooter or photography? Or both? I love the sigma 16mm because it’s wide and low aperture but the Sony lenses are a tad bit sharper. The Sony lenses also have OSS (optical steady shot) which is a plus but not a deal breaker for me personally. They are all great options. If you VLOG or die talking head videos like this one then I would say the sigma 16mm but the Sony 35 for everything else.
@@BrandonBoswell What do you mean by f-stop and how can i adjust f-stop. I get blurry videos with my a6400 and I don't know how to fix that... I didn't have that problem before!
There’s a dial on the top right of the camera. That should change the aperture if you haven’t changed any settings from factory settings. Also it will only go to f1.4 if your lens is a wide aperture. If you are using the kit lens then it’s only f3.5 Hope this helps! If not tell me and we will figure it out.
I'm not a photographer but I just wanna say I hate bokeh or any form of blurring. It's distracting and make sthe overall image look far worse. Why the obsession with isolating a small section that we "look" at. What if I like looking at the background and feel the whole picture is important to the overall feeling I get from viewing the image? My S20 phone recently updated and they added some type of background blur when pulling down the "shutter" on the phone. I see this in games as well with other type of blurring like motion blur as well. I don't know where this phenomenon started but fuck blur seriously
FINALLY!!!!!! someone who explained it where i can understand . Thanks👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

Nice. The kit lens is not a bad lens.
Thank you for this super helpful video! You answered all my questions about aperture settings in very plain terms.
This is the best explanation I found for Bokeh effect in UA-cam.👍
Hey @Brandon Boswell, Thank you for your time and space. great info. although this was over 2yrs ago it is still reaching people. keep going!!!👑

You can use the zoom and get a better bokeh even at higher f number's as it zoomed to close it will produce good bokeh

Can you discuss getting this same effect on our a6400 with the Sigma 16mm lens while shooting in daylight? Been struggling with that!

Yes. Should be really good actually. As long as your focused on the object.
Is there a camera lens that allows you to move further back from the camera and still get that blurred background of effect
If you have a longer focal length then yes.
@@BrandonBoswell more specifically any recommendations for a specific type of lens

What lens do you have?
What lens are you using on this video? I’m thinking if I should get a sony lens 35mm f1.8 or sigma 30mm f1.8 🧐
Christine Naval I’m using the sigma 16mm 1.4 which is my go to lens. But I also own the Sony 35mm and 50mm 1.8 which are amazing lenses.

Brandon Boswell Photography. Bought this just for my baby.
How can I avoid the blurry (and slow-motion) quality of my video while recording? I use a Sony a6400.
What do you mean? The higher the aperture (f-stop) the less the bokeh. (Blurry). Hope that helps.
@@BrandonBoswell What do you mean by f-stop and how can i adjust f-stop.
I get blurry videos with my a6400 and I don't know how to fix that... I didn't have that problem before!
Wait is the whole video blurry? Maybe it’s a focusing problem? Maybe it’s on manual focus?
Your camera could also be in automatic mode which you won’t be able to change anything.
