Greaves has shroud which will turn off your pump spell lines. Mithril Coat might be another protection option. It doesn't have the pump upside of Commander's Plate but it can be flashed.
Your the reason I even play cedh just started watching your content a living my best cedh life vicariously through you. Now I’m all in! Thanks for the consistent and quality content! I do this for the algorithm beats
I've been running solphim, and it's one of my most fun EDH decks. It's tough to say what would do more, early game going to 4 damage is a good chunk, but longer game goes, the bigger the swings get for doubling. Solphim does have its own self protection which is nice too. Also heartless hidetsugu.
I actually just put together a "stax"!Solphim deck like 3 weeks ago and I've been loving it. Ojer just went in the 99. People go from a healthy 30 to single digits really fast
I thoroughly appreciate this classic take on burn. Players will whittle away their resources fending each other’s win attempts off and here you are laying low slowly killing the table and by the time they want to respond, it’s too late.
I think you should try Commander's Plate. 7 damage for each and protection from almost all colors is pretty good. Virtue of Courage also seems busted. You propably autowin if you untap with it or have enough mana. Pyrohemia for the same reason. Propably Mox Opal, too. Chandra seems bad to me.
I'm a big fan of mono red burn, I've had a Torbrann deck since forever and I've constantly been switching between him, solphim, and now Ojer Ax. I can't decide which way gives me the best shot in a stronger pod. Need to try out immodane as well. At least we are getting options! Great video.
Built something very similar, with more of a focus on spells. Feels really nice, pumped to optimize a list. This was a great starting point, thank you!
Ian this is SOLID bro. Love it. I’ve been playing a lot of River song lately and continue to find more burn like cards for it as well to go along with its commander effect. It’s definitely a control deck but could use some more cards like some of the ones you have here for sure 👀
I built this for cEDH as well. I wound up going all in on the punisher effects. Harsh Mentor, Immolation Shaman, Eidolon of the Great Revel, Mindaparker, etc. Grapeshot is a pipe dream because you’re never really drawing enough cards to get more than a couple of storm triggers. Equipment that pumps is also great. Tarrian’s Soulcleaver, Commander’s Plate, etc.
I had an Imodane burn deck that was really fun to play. Converted it to Ojer Axonil and it smacks so hard now. Will definitely be using this list to help me upgrade it to nightmare levels for my pods.
@jasonclarkson3246 I would say probably because this deck can suddenly chunk opponents life totals, so you need to either be conservative with the Ad Naus or possibly die out of nowhere from burn effects
I tried with torbran a few years back but it was just not enough punch. This gives us that punch. I think your kinda spot on. It is a stax deck so it's pod dependant to a degree.
I had an EDH liesa shroud of dusk lifegain deck that I decided to power up a bit so I added some fast mana, and then decided “hey why not I’ll play a game of Cedh with it and see how it fairs” and it has un-ironically been performing way better than it should be. Turns out draining your opponents for 2 for every spell they cast adds up very quickly in a Cedh game and if you’re able to slap on some other stax pieces or drain effects I’ve been able to pretty easily take down decks like rog/si , k’rrik, atraxa, and dargo/thrasios. All this to say that I think burn/stax is a very viable strategy in Cedh right now especially considering that most decks are slowing down
Reckless Fireweaver seems like a really solid addition, with that on the battlefield along with Ojer Axonil if you play Dockside it’s going to ping each of your opponents for the number of treasures Dockside creates times Ojer’s power.
Some ideas: - Bitterspit Gremlin, might be able to replace some of your 2-drops that only trigger of instants and sorceries, and potentially can work like thermo alchemist, just costs 1 mana per ping - Witty Roastmaster, though perhaps we don't have enough creatures - Immolation Shaman, great stax piece in the deck against activated abilities - Reckless Fireweaver, combining this w/ Dockside + your commander, this probably just kills everyone or leaves them in single digits, if dockside makes 6+ treasures, which is pretty average. Also pretty good with Pain Distributor to get damage when you create the treasures. - Tunnelling Geopede, could add this in along w/ fetch lands (probably run the 4 that get mountains plus Prismatic Vista) to push through damage and reward you with damage for making land drops which you want to do anyway. - Shivan Gorge, feels like a free roll and pushes extra damage if you have mana to spare - Goblin Sharpshooter, while it may not be at it's absolute best in this deck, it can pop an opponent for 4 every time a creature dies, then untap to do it again? Or you have the option of using it to remove problematic creatures, seems good - Zo-zu the punisher to hate on fetches
Fiery Confluence might not be terrible here. Some extra Artifact interaction/mana dork killing and if you pick the 2nd mode more than once they count as seperate instances of damage so with Ojer it deals 12 to each opponent.
My buddy plays Torbran, and it plays like a mono red prison/ burn deck it’s really good. He’s won local events and even taken it to some bigger tournaments 😃
Not sure if it's been mentioned but what about Tavern Brawler? It's a background that gives you an extra card each turn and it can pump the commander. O-Naginata is a 1 drop equipment that can pump ojer by 3 for equip 2. And Chandra's Incinerator might be worth considering since you can very easily cast it for 1 red and you have a 6/6 trampler that can deal 4+ damage to a creature per opponent per ping.
Goldfished this a few times and I don't think it felt very smooth. No card draw? Why no playing faithless looting, wheel, or gamble? I think it could use more 1 or 2 mana instants and sorcery's to synergize more with your non creature spell pingers. They are a very consistent way to deal damage to each player and that clock accelerates quickly with each additional creature. Price of Glory could be a helpful stax piece to slow down the blue players? Twinflame? Sandstone Needle could be a helpful piece in turboing out Ojer. More red rituals? I think the mana curve might be a little high too? Lots of 3 mana cards is expensive if we want to be casting multiple spells a turn for lots of Ojer damage.
I built this and saw the same issues and actually have some solutions. Grenzo and Curse of Hospitality can do some serious work, especially since you can hit tutors off of a grixis/esper player. I cut a lot of the pingers and leaned more into punishers because you run out of cards in monored no matter how hard you try so you can't always activate them, but you can bank on your opponents activating an artifact or saccing a creature and then you get damage for free.
@comedIanmtg I’m using this deck in a high powered EDH pod. They definitely have a lot of removal. So should I build up my board before I cast the commander? Or should I try to get the commander out as quick as possible?
just played vs this deck as someone had it advanced and play vs it on Moxfield. Did presure lifes, coulnd't close either of the games. Lacks card draw. More testing is requiered, but a bad start
Grenzo is key in this deck and a common card to tutor for. You can "draw" off your opponent's libraries to keep pushing forward. Add Repercussion and all your creatures are pretty much unblockable and your commander has trample so it's easy to connect to get a couple cards each turn.
Love seeing new archtypes in my in the format. I dont seeing it making deep runs in tournys but its nice to see a mono red variant to go along side godo
I think the deck has a good chance to surprise people unfamiliar with the commander or its potential. Blue farm is still the measuring stick in the cedh yard. For the list I was thinking of the new Dino dragon that exiles two cards a turn and either makes treasure or another 3/1 Dino for additional draws.
As cool as I think Ojer Axonil is I think he's just straight up worse at group slug than the Kelermorph, he gets access to blue for one thing, costs one less, actually deals damage so you can slap a curiosity effect on him and go to town, and I think ward is more useful than the weird transform into a land thing
I wonder if Rug Of Smothering has a place in this deck as well. It won't get the boost from the commander's ability, but it's effect stacks nicely still and might still be good, especially if we are having trouble keeping our commander in play.
My build has Curio lines with Dockside and Voldaren epicure and land punishment with zo-zu. Also thinking on possibility storm as the ultimate stax piece or Vrtue of Courage to refill if the game goes long enough
Honestly I'm so surprised Urabrask's mana advantage and built in Past in Flames hasn't gotten more attention. All you have to do is build him in a way tht nets you cards until you eventually net the win. He draws cards for FREEEE.. 😅 I've been doing extremely well with it n I only need to run one of these Ojer, Solphim or Torbran types to get the train rolling. I don't think slowing the game down in res is gonna work. You need to play the red extra turn spells n be able to go off as soon as you tip your hand and Urabrask has had no trouble helping me get it done. Especially if I was playing all the fast mana you have access too, it'd be a breeze!
love the theme of video! More of those pretty please 💖 also lovely deck, i was thinking the same, it could be fun, obviously its monored, but still can do some funny shit
I adore manabarbs effects. And part of me really wishes mana burn still existed to help punish greedier decks more. Reminds me of a 40k quote I enjoy: "We are all bleeding today, have FAITH, Word Bearer"
you can play 1 land per turn. Mox diamond is not a land. You can play both a land AND mox diamond the same turn. Aka, acceleration. Edit: same if you had gemstone caverns, it's 1 mana of any color, even though you only need red. BUT! If you meet conditions, you have a turn 0 land drop. The benefit here being a turn 0 land, not tapping for any color.
What about thundering Raiju? 4 mana comes out attacks with haste puts +1/1 on commander then smacks everyone for 5 at minimum. Its repeatable and makes all the pings hit harder each time. Also swords of X&Y to give protection and make the dmg go even higher. Maybe im thinking too casual… but it would be a fun high power guy to work on
I think this deck is super viable! I’m building a similar list and the ability for this deck to pump axonil at instant speed to win over top of an opponent is going to be amazing!
Pregame comment: I wonder if my brew is close or far from your brew. I found it difficult to keep card quality decent and have a gameplan that can layer with the burn effects.
I think it has cool stuff. Is there not a way to just jack the power up real high and one shot opp ? I don’t have enough magic knowledge to know or if that’s too janky to try to combo kill

@@juggernautstark1definitely top 16 capable. I just think blue / black/ x are faster win cons currently. But mana barbs and this commander is chefs kiss lol
