My only experience with a system wide SHTF event was 9/11 (was in the WTC). The lesson I learned was that in denser urban environments, quick decisive action and speed trump everything. A few years later, when the blackouts hit NYC, I learned from that lesson. The moment the lights went out, I didn’t wait to question what was going on. I ran to the ferry terminal because I knew in a grid down situation, that was the only way out. I was at the ferry terminal within 10 minutes of the lights going out and I was home in less than an hour. Everyone that waited even 30 minutes to try to figure out what was going on ended up trapped in the city and I had many friends that had to sleep in Grand Central Station that night. My go kit is light and modular. I keep pre planned routes for getting home and getting out. Oh, and my pro tip: mark your maps for flood plains and flood prone areas. Know where those areas are in advance. That was the Hurricane Sandy lesson…

The garden comments make a lot of sense. I don't even eat veggies but I garden almost year round. Rather it be starting plants indoors from seed or outside pruning I'm always on it. It's a good hobby and stress relieves also.

I live alone, in a rural area with no neighbors. I have driveway alarms, alarm sound with red flashing lights all around property. Will increase these many times if things get bad. I will also glue glass to back yard fence, put nails in hose under windows, and put barbed wire around entrance points. Small holes with sharp sticks, trip wire with a big, big bang, also hidden shot gun shells with inner layer of trip wire. Heavy gauge wire at neck level for stand ups and bikes, then there are a few other things I am thinking about.
Please do not tell me these things are illegal, I will only do this if things REALLY break down with gangs roaming the streets and there are no police.
I would NEVER intentionally hurt someone. An old lady has to do something to protect herself!
    Have a blessed day

I have one must have that hardly gets mention. Leather work gloves.
Second, blankets. Lots of blankets. They can be used to block off rooms and conserve heat.
Third, building materials. If a hurricane is coming, plywood is going to be non-existent.
Fourth, a chainsaw. Has to be gas and oil. And chains. You may need to clear downed trees. You may need to cut anything.
Fifth, training. Training in everything. Good training costs money.
Sixth, cash. Add to your kitty to keep up with inflation annually. Your card might not work.
Seventh, to boots. Good, sturdy boots that can be rebuilt. I recommend wildfire boots with soles held on by screws. White's, Niks are the top two. Backpacking boots are much lighter. But heavy, rebuildable boots are critical. Expensive, but with care and repair they'll last 20 years.
Eighth, do NOT rely on hunting. Game will be shot out quickly. I don't care who you are, only reason there's a lot of game is because of game laws. WROL and there is no game law.
Ninth, do not rely on foraging. The caloric value of wild plants is far lower than domesicated cultivars.
Tenth, water storage. The WHO folks who handle refugee camps plan on a base minimum of 5 gallons per person per day toaintain drinking, cooking, and most basic of sanitation. That 50-gallon drum is only going to last one person ten days to maintain a refugee camp standard of living.
And, my honorable mention? Vitamins. Particularly C. If purifying water with bleach or pool shock a crushed vitamin C tablet will neutralize the flavor. You'll drink more water.

@D L For me cotton over linen lately due to cost and texture. Good quality Linen is usually 4-5 x the cost of good quality cotton. Linene also takes a LONG time to break in and make soft (like years). Cotton is more adjustable over all. I should note that "cotton kills" so not great for warmth, but neither is linen. Maybe I should adjust my list to say fabric a minimum of three yards each linen, wool, cotton and as much cotton as you can get your hands on. Spent the bucks to get good quality, like 140 x 140

I'm a retired Navy SERE Instructor, I love the Emberlit gear, We each have one in our BOBs, but for just boiling water, you can't beat the Kelly kettle. And they have an attachment so you can cook off the top while you are boiling water. As to fixed bladed knives I have a Benchmade Bushmaster that has literally been around the world with me when I flew P-3s, I also have a ColdSteel Master Hunter with I replaced the crappy aircrew survival knife with. And then There is my ESSE 5 SERE which is a beast of a knife. I also have a smoker that I can use to make jerky out of the meat in my fridge/freezer. I based the quantity of our supplies on our usage, things like TP etc. What I found was that I had under estimated our usage as things like TP we would use TP at work and the lock down kept us home and using supplies at a faster rate. I also have a ton of rechargeable batteries including RCR123 batteries. For flashlights I have gone to OLight because they are USB rechargeable . Even my weapon light is an Olight

You have to attend general instructor school to learn how to write curriculum and present lectures. It helps a lot if you know someone who is already an instructor. Then you need to have a psych evaluation, and you need to pass it. That is pretty much it

      I think there's a part 2 also.
It would be good to learn how to make a stove that can run on diesel or gasoline as they will probably be procurable for some time after SHTF, and even if you can only carry a quart at a time, that's a decent amount of cooking!
I also like the idea of foraging edibles even in an urban context, as it's surprising to learn just how many plants make good food. Purslane for example grows in sidewalks and is a superfood. Aloe vera is common on balconies. Nut trees and wild fruits often grow on highway shoulders, etc etc!
All of which can be accessed and collected with a decent "vulture" kit 👍

I'd say it's a 100% requirement for making it through any long term scenario and even some short-term. Bottom line up front: if you are injured, you're f*(ked. Those wagons can save you from injury, if used intelligently. Saved my back on a SHORT term SHTF (power outage) when I needed to haul chopped wood to stoke my 72 hour long fire that kept my home from freezing and for cooking some grub.
Essential gear that doesn't get the sexy attention that guns do, but is really important for my situation.

For URBAN SHTF, people seem to neglect breaching tools. If you can’t move around, you can’t forage. In my kit, I can get thru a locked door. I can get thru a chain link fence. I can get into/out of an elevator. I can get past a pad lock. I can get thru a wrought iron fence/gate. And I can get water with a silcock key. My urban survival kit is the tools that let me do these tasks, plus the 10 C’s.

I know you don't advocate for telling people to exercise and I respect your decision. But i will say for mine the 1. Physical fitness without it you will die too quickly for gear to mean anything, 2. Skills and training the more skills you have the less gear you need to carry, 3. water purification, urban areas have a lot of places to get water, however it cant be guaranteed to be safe to drink and you have about 3 days without it before its over, 4. gloves/PPE because a minor cut may be lethal and you use your hands for everything they will get cut eventually, 5. antibiotics and medical supplies, see previous statement. 6. Container for water and cooking you cant make one out in nature or if you can you will expend a lot of energy making it. 7 flame, fire is important know how to make it, or have the ability to light one, dryer lint is abundant and very useful, 8. cutting tool fixed blade knife full tang multi purpose, defense, food prep, shelter making, 9. firearm ammo and spare parts, tools, everyone else has one, and will take advantage of those who don't, 10. friends/teammates, no man is an island. lone wolves may not survive long because they may be hunted by groups due to the fact they may have tried to steal from the wrong group, If they don't run out of resources first. 11. Shelter if you can't get out of the elements they will kill you, Shelter Can be anything from the clothing you have on to a tarp or vehicles.

Don’t think that you are too old to do something (although as we age, things are harder of course and yes, we might also develop some disabilities), it may just take us longer to do it if we are not disabled. At age 52, I did a 21 mile backpack trip in NM starting at Columbine, up to Goose Lake, down and over the Taos valley up to Wheeler Peak (13000 ft elevation) and then down to Middle fork lake and down to the main road there where my husband picked me and my kids up…[kids were in their early 20s]. Was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had and I highly recommend it to those that have not ever backpacked. If you are serious about knowing what you can do and knowing your gear, do some research, get good maps, get in shape, and go for it! I’m 60 now and feel ready for almost anything just because of the skills I have built. Thanks to these guys for the shows they post and other resources. Hugs.

I live in the country and my weak area is self defense. I do have dogs, but they are too nice. LOL I have other ways to protect as well, but am older now and think I might not be very good at those ways. My hands have had surgery. I am getting more concerned now though, because within the last year, our city is seeing way more homeless/druggies and even as far out as I am from the city, they are still wandering out where I live. It is wild to see them high as a kite with arms waving and talking out of their head, walking down my isolated road. I have encountered 4 of these people by my house in the last 6 months. They don’t even know where they are. I called the Sherriff on them, but they could not find them by the time they came around. I worry also that they might die out this far from the city, especially if they do not know where they are. There is no reason for them to be this far out and as high as they were. It was very strange, but I guess when they are on what ever they were on, they have no pain and can walk miles and miles into “nowhere”. Anyway…. I’m getting a little more nervous about it, our world is changing rapidly. I will look up the home defense pdf you mentioned. Thanks.

For toilet paper, go buy yourself a 100 ct package of the cotton shop rags, a pair of 5 gallon buckets (with lids), a couple pairs of the reusable rubber gloves, and some laundry detergent to set aside as a kit. Pre-wash the rags several times now, to prep them for use later. If disaster strikes you now have a tp kit ready to go. Water of course is the limiting factor since you will be doing laundry but as long as you can wash them, you have tp.
    In disaster times:
    1. Split the rags into 2 groups of 50.
    2. You simply use from one group of rags, put the soiled rags in a bucket with the lid on.
    3. When the group is used up, put the second group in place and go wash the first group and hang to dry. These will now become the replacement group. You clean up the bucket at the same time and that is where you store the group when they are dry, along with the soap etc. You can go forever like this.
Ladies will need a similar setup for their monthly business but they will want to get higher quality cloth and can probably use the 2 gallon buckets.

With that, I have several sheets of plywood, some 2x4's, boxes of nails, several rolls of clear plastic and rolls of gorilla tape to secure my house and make any repairs (living in Washington, earthquakes are a worry). I plan on purchasing a medical kit and antibiotics but I can not locate a source for painkillers for severe pain such as Percocets and or morphine. No one is discussing prepping painkillers for emergency use when the pharmacies and hospitals shut down in a EMT and or SHTF. Does anyone out there have a source for some serious painkillers, please let me know. Thank you for your guidance.

One thing that most people do not consider is a four prong water key. I think it's an essential survival tool that will give access to water from most urban government buildings or schools.
Also, a light weight hard rubber mallet is a defensive tool that's effective. A thump from that could really deter the bad guy from carrying on with their plan. It's easier to explain your self-defense with a mallet than with a hammer.

good video. I do think long term versus short term is an important determinant. also, my following observations are biased toward urban decay. sorry for the rant in advance
Statistically, over 90% of incidents will be over in 3 weeks, so I think that should be a minimum goal for stockpiling.
regarding portable solar gennies, one thing to consider with Jackery brand is that the housing is plastic and the battery cannot be replaced, whereas other brands like Goal Zero and Bluetti are metal housings and the batteries can be replaced - the average solar genny battery lasts about 3 years/500 full cycles. and for solar, rigid crystaline is better than fexible because flexible requires 100% direct exposure to work properly, whereas rigid crystalline will still work indirectly.
I am also a big advocate of physical resiliency. Try to do more things around your house via your own physical labor, no electric tools or machines; even if you have 6 months food laid away, try cutting down to 2 meals a day for a week...then even down to 1 for another week and learn how it feels and how your body responds.
Also, learn how to do things you take for granted via other analog means...e.g, learning to cook with gas, charcoal and wood.
put together an AO/AI Area Study noting what's around you, who is around you, at the neighborhood scale and within a mile or so to rope in important things like grocery stores, pharmacies, police stations...section 8 housing complexes, etc
and finally, i'd advocate scanning/downloading all your important docs to an ENCRYPTED thumb drive (home titles, insurance, birth certs, wedding certs, ssids, etc.

Agree 100% on plastic housings being NFG for power stations. Our favorite units are from INERGY. American designed, American support, American QA/QC boots on the ground in China, and durable as they come. I would suggest that you stop by a truck stop and pick up a Motor Carriers map. They are laminated, show all secondary roads nationwide and all information a trucker needs to get from point A to point B. With that you can handrail the interstate highways and get anywhere you need to . I would also suggest a good cart. I’m 65 and my body has the wear and tare of 50 years as a blue collar worker, so carrying a pack for any distance is not going to happen. I took a zero gravity game cart with a 200 lbs load capacity and put a plywood floor and back. It has solid tires and made to go off road. Very handy for carrying firewood, scavenging and buggy out.

#1: Evidence-based kit. STUDY who survived and who died or suffered severe injury during past urban SHTF scenarios, giving weight to ones that were most similar to where you are likely to be. Prepare accordingly.
I respect all these guys, but empiricism trumps all. If one or more of these guests have actually done the homework (see above) then great; I can't call them armchair quarterbacks.
Even ONE urban SHTF experience isn't enough, statistically speaking, to act like a know-it-all. You need to take the responsibility and do the research.
For many of us, let's be real, the #1 threat* will be: _being the wrong person in the wrong riot_ . If you're in a vehicle, understand:
    - First, they will block your vehicle (e.g.- but not limited to - standing around it)
    - Second, they will flip your vehicle
    - Third, they will remove you from your vehicle....OR
    - They will burn your vehicle (with you in it or not, you decide)
Any effective way you handle this will likely result in legal problems, so get some good insurance if using a firearm is in your spectrum of tools. Consider non-lethal tools like flash bang, pepper-based sprays/rounds/devices, less than lethal projectile weapons, smoke, etc. I do think you need lethal options and either a good EDC (everyday carry) system (including footwear you can move fast in) or a small, lightweight "get home" bag within arms reach. Because you can't "cover your 6" (stop threats behind you), you'll be very lucky to get out of this by yourself...
*Evidence-based. If you don't know about what happens to vehicles in riots, you can find lots of info. on the internet.

Here in the South-East, we can grow nearly anything BUT it needs to be fungus and bug resistant. I stick to a lot of regional native plants and plan my companions based upon them. You also need to consider your space and soil types. If youre growing on an apartment balcony, try starting with peppers and tomatoes. branch out from there! Best of luck and do your Homework!

    @prairiepatriot2162 Рік тому

It needs to be said, we are in urban, and to a smaller extent suburban, WROL. In major cities, people already do openly shoot at the police regularly. In Chicago alone, there are an average of 2 murders per day and what doesn't make the news are the multitude of armed robberies, batteries, and carjackings. It certainly can get worse, but it already is pretty bad, so there is plenty to learn from what's already working today.
What has been working for decades, as evidenced by multitudes of police involved shootings, is that urban police and sheriff's departments have been dropping bad guys reliably with 9mm 124gr Speer Gold Dots or substantially similar loads launched from various wonder 9 polymer framed pistols, particularly Glocks. You should carry something like the above mentioned concealed but able to be deployed quickly. You need to start by not looking like a soft target which means carrying yourself like you have a chip on your shoulder and somewhere to be in a hurry, and not looking like the police or a "tactical guy" so is not to become a target.
Suppressed SBRs aren't a legal option for the vast majority of people in urban and also suburban areas. For those who either think they're hard or just plain don't have a clue and say they don't care about the law, "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6," the jails and prisons are far worse than the outside, you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. If you think you're tough, you're not tough to stop multiple gang members at the same time and you're certainly not tough enough to stop shank; you won't be anyone on the inside unless you're already connected.
The best thing you can do to prep for urban WROL is to get far out of the cities and ideally to live in a free state. And definitely don't go to those places and vote Democrat or throw away your vote on some clown or 3rd party candidate. Vote in every election, these places got to where they are because of decades of left-wing policies so vote for the most conservative ELECTABLE candidates.
