Lambert economical with the truth about Villa. He was happy enough to sign a new contract in the September and yet was delighted to be sacked 5 months later. We were delighted as well considering the abysmal run he had us on. 2 wins and 8 league goals in his last 21 games.
Despised at Ipswich. Somehow managed to get a 4 year extension on his contract when we expected him to be sacked. We're probably still paying his wages. A proper interview would have exposed his failures.
Villa fan here, 100 percent agree, dreadful manager, always slagging the fans off and always seemed to be bombing out players who could have helped him e.g Hutton, bent, Warnock
Did fantastically well at my team norwich but my god he's an angry, odd little man, being economical with the truth seems to be a personality trait of his
Great podcast! Would've loved to hear his opinion on David Raya who he had at Blackburn. And his opinion on Simeon Jackson who accelerated his managerial career. The banter with Brown was great!
I may have missed it but he doesn't mention his brief stint as Blackburn Rovers manager .... he signed a 2 and a half year deal in November 2015, and then activated a release clause in his contract 6 months later, after keeping them up. It's one of a few instances of a Manager " sacking " a Club, rather than the other way round ....
Story of a Blackburn fans life. Get a promising ambitious manager Make promises like players for promotion. Don’t meet said promises at all. Part ways with ambitious manager. Appoint manager to keep us up. Repeat.
He’s not being very honest in this interview. He signed a new contract at Villa and knew exactly what he was walking in to. Also he had the money to buy Kozak and Benteke but couldn’t sign Lukaku on loan? That sounds like BS.
I can see why you wouldn't trade a wembley win, but the Wigan going down was a massive failure on Martinez's part, he rode his luck each season trying to get his backline to pass it around like they were Barcelona.
@@dubiouscaesar3709 agreed. Shaun Maloney is using the same tactics now. It’s boring. Most teams do it to be fair. Professional football is getting really boring.
Strange how the pinnacle of his managerial career was back to back promotions and keeping NCFC in the prem, yet he said he should have left us after promotion. He's been toilet everywhere he's been since, and he only got the villa job based on what he did with us. Find it odd
Well realistically with that board and owners etc he isn't going to achieve anything more than a relegation battling prem side at best, the season he came up his stock will have been at its highest so makes sense in hindsight for him to have left while his stock was highest?
When Lambert says O'Neil turned celtic around what he doesn't tell you is that Rangers were turned around after nine in a row when Dick Advocatt was brought in and the team broke up, he then brought in a whole new team which took years to settle!! O'Neil was nothing special... Trust me!
Not a word about his brief stint as Wolves manager either where the fans weren't really bothered by him going, the football was mostly dull and ineffective, bombed out players like Saiss who went on to become an integral part of Nunos team, used his contacts in the press to try and garner sympathy and support for him on his way out... A manager who dined out on the style of football his Norwich side played and who never ever replicated it anywhere else afterwards, certainly not at Wolves.
I wonder if the same guy sorted out Scott Booth's move from Aberdeen to Dortmund and ultimately on to Twente as well. Booth, arguably at the time was higher regarded than Lambert in Scotland.
aye I remember seeing him in the Record saying it had pained him to give his season ticket at Ibrox and swap it for a seat at Parkhead to watch his boy!
Met him when I was a teenager at Celtic park in the VIP for a league cup game. I was just a teen, he was either being rested/injured. "Mr Lambert can I have an autograph please" "Mr Lambert?? Thats the first time I've heard that off a Celtic supporter" then he signed the autograph. Later on me and my cousin were walking by and hes on the phone (rare in those days) and I could hear him say "That Bobby Petta is pure dead f*cken brilliant by the way". Haha what a player he was hes still underrated to this day. That Celtic team were the best I've seen in my lifetime and he was such an integral part of it. Thanks for everything you done for Celtic Paul.
@fugeestonner1321 hail hail it was a fantastic time to be a celtic fan. Its not so bad now either to be fair just wish we were a bit competitive in Europe like the O'Neill/Strachan teams.
Good point about the Premier League. You can be mid table in the championship and you have some sort of team spirit, as soon as you get promoted to the prem the team spirit just gets torn apart what with owners thinking they've got to buy top players and hammerings every week. The top tier shouldn't be like that, it's a closed shop nowadays, it's so dull.
Drew Jarvey was a class coach. although to waste time while setting up a session he told us to do keepy uppy and i was still going when he was ready to start. he came over clapping then volleyed the ball miles away n told me to go get it 🤣
Couldn’t wait to get out of Villa but didn’t have the decency to resign, Paul Lambert thinks he’s doing clubs a favour just being there- went weeks on end at Ipswich mentioning Dortmund and Celtic in every press interview while he presided over the worst team in Ipswich Town’s history. Pathetic little man full of hot air, bullshit and bravado.
I like Paul Lambert as a person BUT just seeing him gives me flashbacks to awful, awful times for Aston Villa. If nothing else, he'll go down in history for being the bloke who coined the term "bomb squad".
Don't think the advice at St Mirren to always be honest sank in with him eh?? Complete dishonesty towards Motherwell fans, his manager and team mates. Snake
Liked him as a player & I remember anting dortmund to win the UCL but but of an arrogant man. Fancy saying he was glad about getting sacked from a job (and probably getting millions out of it) for doing a sh1t job (even if he got little financial backing - it didn’t stop him doing good jobs at Colchester & Norwich who had less backing). Sherwood came in & turned the club around & got the club to an FA cup final (even if they did go down the season after).
This man can clearly manage , possibly not got the people skills, who knows . All i know is that Paul Lambert is one of Scotland's greatest players . Not under rated , personal circumstances resulted in him returning to Scotland , not his ability 🏴✌️
True, but Lambert started in central midfield against Zidane and co, Greening was kicking his heels on the bench. I think Lambert even provided the cross for the first goal in the final.
He was dreadful at villa and I think he’s not exactly telling the whole truth here, couldn’t get lukaku on loan but he sounded a fair few quid on Kozak Bowery and helenius….

Wigan fan here. Wouldn’t swap the FA Cup win for survival. As he says, you play to win trophies. Not say you finished 17th 8 seasons on the bounce.
I can see why you wouldn't trade a wembley win, but the Wigan going down was a massive failure on Martinez's part, he rode his luck each season trying to get his backline to pass it around like they were Barcelona.
