Your expectation of sound propagation through waters of different salinity zones is basically correct. For best masking, your submarine should be about 50 feet below the layer, in the shadow zone. This offers the best area for defeating active sonar from surface search units.
Typhoons, Kievs, Kirovs and some larger merchants will take more than 1 ADCAP (between 2-3). What probably happened is the Akula took an aerial torpedo that got locked onto it but that’s not enough to sink one.
@@TortugaPower Do you mean in real life or in the game? I don’t know about real life but in the game Typhoons will take a minimum of 2 ADCAPs and usually it takes 3.
The Medal of Honor is above the Navy Cross. It is available in game but I’m not sure how you get it. I think it’s tonnage sunk but you have to extend the campaign with a few failed missions, ironically.
@@TortugaPower I thought so too but, I heard they started incorporating titanium into sub builds after the Alfa class, due to it’s ability to hold integrity at deeper depths. Also much harder to damage.
I think the Akula took the SS-N-16 Stallian launched form the Victor III when it was unable to find the Seawolf, that made it loud and vulnerable, and then the ADCAP did its job. I could be wrong, but this is the most likely explanation of what happened, cause its true that no sub other than a Delta or a Typhoon can take more than one ADCAP.
@@TortugaPower Typhoons and Deltas can, when I completed the 1980s campaign where the last mission was to neutralise Soviet SSBNs, I had to use 2 Mk 48 for the Typhoon, 1 on nose and 1 on the aft reactor compartment, also surface ships like Kirov and Kiev take atleat 2 ADCAPs to sink.
@@TortugaPower That's correct, in real life, nothing can withstand an impact from an ADCAP, not even Typhoons, the massive warhead plus the hull breach would instantly disintegrate the boomer. Only capital ships like carriers and Kirovs can hold on after taking an ADCAP, hell even the Kirovs might succumb to flooding sooner or later. Also depends on the DC teams IRL.

That was my thought, too.
I don't know, but I suspect not even a Typhoon can withstand an ADCAP. Surface ships have a much easier time controlling flooding.

Watch it for fun. You always delight
“We’re locked on to the Akula!” (Crimson Tide)
I was waiting for this one and it was worth it. Thanks TortugaPower a great way to start the weekend.
It sent your first shot back at you then was hit by friendly fire before being taken out by that last shot.

Akulas in CW had taken 2 hits, and Typhoons had taken up to 3 hits.
More COW men!!! Engoing the series
Akula subs are strong. If memory serves me correctly, they make the hulls out of titanium.
Huh, I thought that was unique to the Alfa

Hey Tortuga. Do you speak any Russian at all?
You’re still Tortuga

It's a good theory. (Seems others agree too)
Can any submarine really sustain an ADCAP? I find that surprising.

@@architkumarsingh9346 Ah, right -- in the game it's true. I was wondering about real life.

Can the enemy AI make a decision to try to escape? You'd think that the Akula woundn't try to stick out and fight after being hit once.
