Love how he's just sitting there like he's playing in front of friends.
He was a natural. Truly.
I've watched countless hours of him live. And that's my story.
(Sticking to it)
People watch him like time is standing still the second he plays the first notes to his first song. His humble and playful banter just talking before sets amplifies this fascination once he switches from genuinely humble to breathtaking singer playing the most beautiful songs that can be put to a guitar and a microphone.
This same phenomena occurs when he performed Clementine on that Morning Show.. Around people so used to putting on their persona and playing out the facade like all the morning show watchers expect.. But when he starts playing, that facade and all the personas that were holding up the facade all fall away, and instantly everyone falls back to their genuine human selves..
Its such a beautiful phenomena, I want nothing more to do with my life than to practice and learn & cover, practice, write and perform with same energy that Elliott would. By any means necessary I can achieve it, there's nothing I'd like to do more than to create this kind of beautiful relief from the chaos of daily life that Elliott could with his music. So fascinatingly beautiful.
13:55 to 14:05 my favorite Elliott facial expression. Intimate, mournful, impossibly cute…
I love the totally random exchange at 24:01
- Person on the back: "Implode, implode right now.."
- Elliott: "Ehm, I think that happened last week"
It was the chick to his left and she said "Let it flow" when he expressed self doubt, and then he said I think that happened last week and she thought it was a period joke and got up and left but Elliott was a cutter so it may have been dark humor or both. smh. Where have all the dancers gone?
I seriously wonder how Elliott would feel if he lived in the modern age? I wonder how his songwriting would be affected? What he would think of society? He was such a gift to this world. His music will always resonate with me. RIP Elliott Smith
Yep. Most talented figure of the late 90’s and early 00’s. I wish he could have stuck around longer but that’s selfish of me. Dude was suffering. I am too so I don’t blame people who delete themselves but it so often happens to the nicest people.
he would have loved Tumblr
Phoebe Bridgers probably would lie about him and get him cancelled no doubt
@@PuddleBooks???
@@christiangasior4244
Let's please not pretend he "deleted" himself.
He expresses that he's sorry for not singing better and yet everyone is in awe...
it’s so easy to focus on our own mistakes, he was no exception, i don’t think he knew just how much he entranced people. the” ‘mistakes” were part of what made him beautiful. at least that’s what i think.
@@carleywelin4163I couldn't agree more❤
Elliott condenses a lot of feelings in me.
Its nice to see the guy talking at the start paints a picture of that world

If anyone knows what the date was when Elliott did this live show that would be great! I'd like to know how early these drafts of songs are!😊
@subcomandante marcos thanks!
@subcomandante marcos okay! Thank you so much again! I wasn't a hundred percent on the date listed here and glad it can be confirmed!
Everybody care everybody understands alot more personqlised lyrics
He hardly every played miss misery nice to hear it! Its got a nice melody
So when this took place?
His music was just featured in a huge movie, 2 months after this he would perform at the Oscars, and some b*tch repeatedly says “bye” when he got flustered at the end. Absolutely incredible. That kind of crap is hard to shake off when you’re a sensitive person. RIP Elliott. 🙏
She stares into space like a dead china-doll.
Just had a look - bit of a weirdness in there from some people definitely. It's sad how some people are uncomfortable to the point of hostility by people who are obviously unsure of themselves in some respects - bummer to see and hear here, especially when it wasn't even a bad performance - not like that should matter - some people just have to try and take people down and it stinks.
@@4L3X3MYes, it's unfortunate. Perhaps they're insecure themselves, or people did that to them when they were younger. Many times, strangers have been hostile to me as well. It's like they sense some kind of vulnerability.
When did they say that
love how he is just sitting there.
I was there!! so wild. I'm 46 now :(
lucky you :)
did you interact with that odd woman with the white shirt who was yelling and talking? I wanna know her story
wow you are lucky
i wish i was you so bad
you were just a baby then.
It cracks me up when he stops Angeles and someone shouts "take a deep breath"
why? i think they meant it as like "it's fine just take a deep breathe and continue playing"
@@lastsonshine you misunderstood him

The girl who was screaming in his ear and startling him just left around 25:00...was she kicked out? Are the most annoyingly enthusiastic people the least interested?
Reckon those parts where he stops (esp waterloo sunset) are just part of the Elliott package. These guys got quite a treat seeing Elliott in the raw.
His little quirks and quips put a smile on my face every time
Cool to see another version of this performance. I was there that night (you can see me in a lot of the video :) and it was really special and cool. Was the last time to see Elliott in such a small venue/setting in Boston.
Who were you?
@@claudiomargheri2087 yeah he cant leave us hanging like that lol

For real
So sick, you were at the Unwound reunion show as well!
I remember working at the Harvard Square Loews Theater the night of this show…. Just down the street, and very frustrated that i couldn’t make it. Billy put on great shows
Imagine being here, experiencing this and just loudly talking over it? Unbelievable. Would empty my bank account for the opportunity to watch this man perform one last time.
Apparently Elliott would ask the audience to continue speaking while he plays as it made him feel more comfortable.
He seems in his element
He was so talented, thx for this dude
Here he is... the beautiful bastard himself. Great upload - thanks man :)
Amazing stuff, the version of I didn't understand was brilliant.
im the dude at 7:05
EDIT: TO CLARIFY i am not actually the dude at this concert. but in this moment he embodies my feelings
man what id give to see elliott live :(

As i've learned here in the comments she's cat power!
it cracks me up he just chilling there while dude blabbles on and on and then decides to tune his guitar when he gets the mic. only Elliott!
He looked so relaxed and happy at first lol
At first :)
IMMACULATE SET ELLIOTT
I WISH I COULD HAVE KNOWN YOU
I was at a similar show (pretty sure the same year) at the Tower Records in downtown Seattle. Same vibe, people sitting down the aisles of CDs, Elliott just on a chair. I would love to see footage from that show!
Aww He was too hard on himself 🖤
This is such a treat, can't believe this is the first time I've seen this clip of him! Thanks for uploading 🙏
Coming up on your anniversary, dear old friend. I hope youre being good up there. Im thinking of you. xxx
He's so cool about the speaker being messed up.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
There's always that to consider....
Phonetically that's a Neva Dinova song name.
Nice! One of my favourites in a different view.
I love how if you’re a smoker you can tell the people who are smoking to just fit the vibe and feel cool, from the way they blow the smoke out without taking it back🌬️
omgggg this was on my birthday id die to have been able to see it
This is great! thanks for sharing.
Does anyone know what he meant after Bled White that he talked about him storming off last week? Sounds like there's a story there.
no
Amazing video & quality, thanks for uploading!
11:50 did he say i love you mom
yes, that's the original lyric of the song. he changed it later and that's why he says "xo, mom" on the released song :) !
I want to just love this concert, but the people talking in the background are so infuriatingly rude, and the woman that keeps shouting. It just blows my mind. They didn’t realize what they’re witnessing I imagine, it’s just incredibly rude. They have no idea how lucky they were.
Because “Boston”…. Rudest city in the country
Even back then there were people who had to make it about themselves. Mental illness. Especially the girl in white.
Great show !! Thanks a lot !
I love you, lady swaying in the background. 😍
Great upload ❤
He reminds me so much of Kurt. Such a gentle soul
This is the bets thing I've ever seen
The greatest ever. Not even fucking close.
why the hell do people still need to bloody talk
Because they dont know the songs yet! If they did they would all be singing along as we would today! God I he wish is was still here!!
RIP Eliott Smith
He liked a little bit of chat, it probably made him more relaxed
@@joshuasunn007 they should still be quiet even if they don’t know the songs. How are they going to get to know them if they talk over them fs
Have you never been to a concert? It is what it is. Some people are just there for a good time. It’s fine.
@@allstopblue5717 Eh, for a loud rock show or something I'd agree, but it does really irritate me when people blather through these types of intimate acoustic sets.
Intersting, Everybody Understands has quite different lyrics.
Okay can we find the very into it woman who's right behind him for quite sometime... I would really like to find her and see if she remembers ANYTHING from that night.

If Earth travels 584,000,000 miles a year thru space, then we have traveled 15,184,000,000 since this show. So that's 0.3% of a light year. The Universe is inconceivably massive, and this show is still happening somewhere out there.
Division Day would make an amazing single but you’d probably have to remove the sick exchange stuff. So catchy though. Such a genius.
Why would you have to remove that?
This is gonna blow your mind. Division Day... was released as a 7" single, in '97, with "No Name No. 6" as the B side.
I was the maintenance man for the hotel he stayed at on this weekend. I didn't really know his music, but I knew his face from things I read. I saw him walking the grounds before he left. I remember thinking maybe I should try to get an autograph? Later after he checked out with his manager(?), the housekeepers asked me to help them clear his room because of all the booze bottles. I never saw so many empty, half-full and full hard liquor bottles in my life....it was so obvious he wasn't gonna last long.....
anyway, even with so many booze bottles he was a great artist and did a lot more in a short time than most people do in a long and stupid life...
part of him will last for a long long time through his songs, helping countless people along the way
probs just had pals round
@@dithirambos I dont think they were trying to disparage him in anyway..im curious to know if they really thought he was near death or just he parties at the time or if hindsight is just 2020...
@@TobiasHoen what u just said is poetry I swear
Elliott could have shut down that woman with the short hair a couple times when she was acting like an idiot, like the times she screamed out of nowhere or told him to implode; instead, he always gave some tactful response so as not to hurt her feelings. Can you imagine someone like Drake, Adele, or any other performer at their level of fame being nice to such an obnoxious audience member? No chance, they'd roll their eyes, ridicule them, tell them to shut up, etc. Elliott was just TOO nice.
Did he say “12-stepping cop”?
Alcoholic anonymous the song is about his friends intervention and sending him to rehab, less specific in the album version
that's crazy if that's true coz scroll up and it says he drank beer in '98; also crazy coz he was actually on the forefront of legalizing heroin. saying he's seen the boss blink on and off because it's the blink between it should be legal through the paperwork law and it should be legal through the law of the land. but no one would kno if the demand would surpass the supply and if overdoses would go down. so i interpret it as a paradox: he's seen the boss in the crowd time and time again preventing legalization and yet a fan of the music.
@@AcidRavelEffectno, totally off the mark dude.
@@AcidRavelEffect"Christian Brothers" is about his stepfather, Charlie Welch. In "2:45 am" he also says "the boss that couldn't help but hurt you, and the pretty thing you made desert you," he's also talking about Charlie and his mother. Many of his songs are about his relationship with them, and Charlie is typically alluded to as some kind of authority figure, e.g. "the boss" or using a military motif (he was in the military)- "had a dream as an army man with an order just to march in one place while a dead enemy screams in my face," "Sergeant Rock broke the key off in the lock to where I come from." Sergeant Rock was a popular comic book character in the mid-20th century, he was like a mix between a superhero and a soldier. Smith believed that Charlie abused him, but his mother took Charlie's side and Smith ended up moving from Texas to Oregon as a teenager to live with his father. Based on his lyrics, I believe this was the single most defining thing to happen in his life.
All the smoking indoors going on...holy moly.
The guy talking in the beginning seems cool
Billy Ruane Boston Legend.
Billy Ruane was a damn prince. He was such a champion for the local music scene here in Boston/Cambridge. He had a finger on the pulse and when he said, go to X,Y,Z show, you went, because he just KNEW what was up. That's how I ended up there. Was always a Sebadoh fan, but my god, Elliott Smith changed my life. I miss them both.
The person in the jeans and white shirt behind him screaming is annoying af
What’s with the weird girl to Elliott’s left with main character syndrome? She’s all into the performance and then leaves partway through a legendary performance of Clementine 😅
Prob drunk/high is my guess. Seems like she's on crystal
1:49 was that a cellphone?
The crowd was not worthy
nice bunch, even the shouting woman.
exactly they could not bloody well shut up
I can’t tell if he’s playing his Red Label.
the person in the white shirt is on something 😂
apparently it’s the songwriter Cat Power
@@alsharpe no it's not lol
people wouldn't shut up until he got to Waltz #2. That shut them up! Go Elliott!
Anyone know the type of guitar that is?
Yamaha F series, red-label made in Japan. Any solid-top Yamaha F series you can buy new will sound similar, they're very underrated guitars and the lower-end ones are very cheap. They're really loud for a dreadnought body style so they're great for playing without a pick. John Pearse brand strings.
It was actually Kurt Cobain's guitar at one time and a few other people... it's a famous guitar
These people don't even understand what they're listening to
audience in the back won't shut up..
B&w love story movie please

Are you talking about the girl that leaves in the middle of Clementine?
@@cloudcircusgaming5153Yeah I think so. I can’t help but laugh at when she screams after Division Day, and Elliott’s just like “Well there’s always that to consider”. That lady had to be on something. No idea why she just left mid set lol

Grr- people talking at shows/
He was really upset. Probably starting withdrawals. He seemed loose, relaxed and feeling good at the beginning, then he got frustrated and tense, so the shit probably started wearing off too quick
Couldn't be more wrong; he hadn't begun using at this point.
Why would you post something so erroneous and with such assurance?
@@marcb.cardlab6750 ok, obviously had begun using. Difference of perspective. Cheers mate
@@Zach-ls1if According to his close friends, Elliott started using heroin and crack towards the end of 2000. Before that point he only drank alcohol, which he was addicted to.
all i was seeing was his performance jilted by the announcer who must've been extremely nervous from allowing underage drinking. not the reason why elliott needed more watts in the future.. like -- telling everybody to sit down... was that an effort to not be seen through the windows?? this couldve actually surged pot to be legal because is it going to be so much worse if they're all too high to do homework. which didnt even matter if it was on a friday. youth clubs were speakeasys for minors to begin with!
Idiots. How absurd is the first and last comments on an ES video no less? You have the gull to post that slander without an ounce of self awareness or empathy, or apparently real life experience.
Nevermind the fact everything you've been told about drugs is a lie, made illegal due to racism, kept that way to profit of those undesirables people like to look down on. The last commenter if they were serious clearly has no idea who anyone in this video is. You're supposed to expand your mind not close it.
And Elliott's only misadventures with John Jameson's at this time. Thank God some of us are old enough to actually remember and have lived experiences instead of speculating on things we shouldn't be commenting on.
