- Downloaded the recently uploaded video of the Echo show and laid the high quality bootleg of the concert with a little bit of EQ and noise reduction overtop. There were a couple of talking parts that wasn't in the audio source I used, so i just used the original videos audio.

This is one of his last shows and amazing.
Sounds like he played good to go in a completely different key. Anyone else notice this?
@Chris Steiger I noticed that, too! He probably played it higher during live shows because it was harder to hit lower notes in one take. Especially when you consider that he was just coming back to playing shows after going to rehab around this time, so his voice wasn't as strong as usual.
What a setlist!
As someone who was an enormous fan of Elliott's at the time, I can tell you, we were all very concerned about him in those days - his struggles at the time are pretty well documented. So when he finally resurfaced a bit in late 2002 and 2003, it was such a huge relief. Sure, he was still getting his footing again, but he was *him* again. Looking back at this footage 21 years later, it's so clear to me how much he was really, really trying and so clearly happy to be playing music and seeing people again. It's bittersweet, of course, knowing how things ultimately worked out - but undeniably beautiful. We really miss you, dude.
Well said. I just listened to the recording of him in Chicago in May of 02 and to see the contrast from this performance 5 months later it’s like he regained his footing and kept hanging in there and this performance is amazing and beautiful and I’m just happy he was able to resurface at all and make a performance like this happen after it got really bad for him.
I don’t know much about him. What were his demons from? Breakups? Sexual abuse? Mental health? Depression? I know there was drug addiction, but were there deeper problems that the drug addiction was masking? Thanks
@@Zach-ls1if possibly his step dad sexually.abused him but he did abuse him. He made songs about it even
Perfectly put. He was a little 'Rusty' in this performance, but truly, and totally clear and "inside" the songs.
He was ""Present". He was in full control. ....(none of the "stopping and starting" that he got caught up in ) ...
His guitar technique on "Memory Lane" (not an easy song to play by any means),
is as good as I've ever heard it. All of these songs, so well delivered. This performance is So good.
Thank you for uploading this.
@@unknownpresences5627 the sexual abuse seems pretty unlikely and more a symptom of an increasing paranoia that took over him (according to the biography)
No one will ever do so much with just vocals and acoustic guitar
Nick Drake, Lindsey Buckingham
@@hendude127 Lindsey Buckingham's awesome. "Never Going Back Again" is a hell of a song.
@@Topspin89 It is, I learned it but Im not great at it haha. What's tough about it isn't really the chords or picking (also very hard though), but getting all the strings to ring out. It's tough to not play muted strings accidentally. Also Nick Drake is great too because of his ability to make a guitar sound like a living breathing creature. I think part of it was his DIY recording style, very intimate. Also I do love Elliot Smith, I just think these two artists are also great. But Elliot Smith's strumming style is so unique, and his songwriting is some of the greatest ever.
Maybe just one: Townes Van Zandt
Neil Young
I was lucky enough to see him perform live 7 times and got to shake his hand once. An artist in the truest sense of the word. He was struggling through some of the shows. I remember a 2 night stint in NYC. The first night he could barely make it through his set and stopped performing about 20 minutes in. The crowd was cheering him on to keep playing but he was clearly too intoxicated. The very next evening he was sober and played the most inspired, mind blowing show I’d ever seen from a guy with just and acoustic guitar. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since his death. Anniversary was just 5 days ago. A true legend. ❤️ Elliott Smith.
Do you remember which year and/or venue it was that he could barely make it through and quit after 20 minutes?
The way he composed these songs without making them sound crowded and busy with too many chord changes is brilliant..!!!!
So much of his stuff is perfectly complicated. Like he is great at mixing that simple folk/baroque pop stuff with his near boundless knowledge of music theory ingrained in his brain from a young age.
Celebrities dont have a real, raw, human quality like this anymore. Elliot was one of a kind. Just a regular appearing guy with a spectacular ability to emote for the audience. It was never about the fame, or praise for him. True artist pouring out his heart. He feels like he could be my friend or neighbor. I see a piece of myself through elliot. I believe many of us do. Which is why his loss hurts so much.
Yep. He was just a regular guy. Indie rocker. He wanted none of that tacky popularity contest crap. He was the furthest thing from a "celebrity." I sat right next to him once at a bar in NYC. We didn't talk but I did get a light off him for my cig. Actually, I didn't even know who he was at the time.
"If it’s up to me, my next CD will be very anticommercial and uncompromising. Commerce means nothing to me. That’s an aspect that I shut out a long time ago. The creative element, the songwriting, the artistic freedom is completely at odds with success and recognition for me. So I made a choice. A choice that at the moment, with XO, is very close to commercial and success, but which will soon yield very different things. Things that might bring me back to square one. Right now, I’m going with the flow and I don’t have that much control over my work. Partly because I don’t understand yet why so many people appreciate my work. But once I figure that out, I’ll draw my conclusions and you may never hear my name again.”
@@HowToDriveinOregonReviews That summed that up.
a spectacular ability to emote for the audience? no, a spectacular ability to show up smashed to his shows and get chatty because of how fucking loaded he was. i love him so much and it is just so sad to watch him like this. in his sober shows, you'll notice he rarely speaks to the crowd. poor guy.
Beautiful words. I agree. I am a fan for only a month in which I learnt and got to know this artist. Rare footages like this one helps me feel the most emotionally closed to knowing this beautiful piece of human who could be alive today and not so old. It's so sad. He expresses emotions without doing anything. That's pure beauty. He's so talented, maybe the most talented musician I've ever known.
RIP Elliott 😢
Unreal angles on how Elliott plays the songs. This is going to blow the tab community away. Thank you so much for 20+ years of questions answered.
my thoughts exactly.
always sounds like he has four hands, amazing to see how he does it
this is gonna be great for learning Fond Farewell. its been a while, but the video i used last time was taken from far away. i think it was one of his last concerts actually, in LA
@@Xavier-xt1lo I've transcribed about half the songs now, it's pretty mind blowing. I'll do a post on r/elliottsmith or something and also my blog that I haven't updated in like 10 years lol. Seeing how he played Happiness was a game changer for sure, because it's really hard, and the fingers have to be in the right places one wrong move and you can't do the change! EDIT: also A Passing Feeling!!
@@ianlennoxx smilingatconfusion?
untouchable. for such an unassuming presence, the art is transcendent, immense and timeless. what a gift he was and a gift, he still is.
Couldn't of put it better myself
Most artists' songs are so much easier to play than you think they are. Elliott makes his work seem effortless, but with this angle you see how complex every single guitar part is.
I'm trying to learn angeles. It's far from easy.
I just learned Kings Crossing. The chords are easy, but playing them while singing with the perfect speed, pitch, tone and - well - passion, is actually pretty difficult. Takes a lot of practicing and listening for sure.
It's A.I.
@@nolanwolfe thats the thing! It's a omnicomprehensive task, so to say. Cant really and shouldnt judge things 'in a vacuum'
Im glad you're aware (:
So true. I tried learning memory lane earlier and gave up in about 4 minutes lmao
I was stoned last night when I went to sleep and woke up a few hours later with my earbud still in. Music was playing and I thought to myself, "This is the best thing I've ever heard in my life." I was in total awe! It happened to be this video playing. It was like the first time I heard him all over again and it made my heart very very happy. ❤🖤🤍
my senior year of hs, i got suspended indefinitely for selling weed and I only listened to elliott smith live bootlegs for an entire year. this is an incredible video. thank for you posting it.
Sorry man that sounds super traumatic and stressful as a young adult, hope you’re doing well
all hardcore elliott fans rejoice when new footage drops. thanks so much :)
Heartbreaking to watch. He was such an enormous talent but such fragile soul.
his pupils are pure black. homie was having a rough night. But he sounded like an angel. Rest now. What a gift for this to be uploaded. thank you for the gift whoever did this.
Crack attack
I don’t think you can devise that through that vhs quality, that energy doesn’t need to be brought here 😘🙏🙏
@@cartnitereturns they are and I can. It’s true. It’s not demeaning to be honest. I am the hugest fan. I have also suffered with the same things and know it when I see it. Honest energy that is empathic is good. I wish he got help and I wish those around him knew how to help him. Unfortunately it has to come from inside.
@@lexremillard2549 He did get up and clean up before his death but watching those videos only confirm he's really high in this video. His interaction with the crowd seems much more extroverted than usual and his pupils are totally dilated in those lights. He's way more nervous and shy in the later videos where he is actually clean. Agree, no judgement - getting in front of a crowd and being "on" is a lot of pressure, especially for such a raw, sensitive person. Impossible not to feel for him.
@@michaelscholz9448 “clean” is determined by the definition based on who is stating. He was on meds, a stimulant for adhd? people I know who suffer from addictive disorders typically don’t take them as their psychiatrist who understands the treatment wouldn’t suggest that med. The other problem is that when suffering from addiction being totally sober after being on serious drugs is sometimes much worse (that’s why longer term treatment facilities exist to walk people through that healing time that is inherently
Uncomfortable and tough.” It’s messy and the truth we will never really know with Elliott. It’s just sad. That’s it.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen him play Miss Misery live outside the promotional stuff for Good Will Hunting, an absolute hero
its nice to see how much the crowd seems to really respect and care about him in this video, as if it was just a big room of friends with a guitar.
All I can think, after watching the ending interaction with the crowd before Between The Bars, and the infamous video where he stops playing Waltz, is the line "It's just that everyone's interest is stronger than mine" from Rose Parade. It breaks my heart, because it feels like he had so much talent and inner beauty yet so few people or institutions he could trust to genuinely be in his interest. He was overwhelmed and fought it until the end, but it breaks your heart.
I may say youre the first to mention that specific line. Which i've always loved as well. It stands out for some reason. I may even say there is at least another 'meaning' to it, even though im well aware songs and lyrics arent to be intended as little boxes to be explained. One cannot expect that i always find it ridiculous. The will to infere, delve deep into something is indeed necessary and a sign of dedication, and ultimately love toward the things one is interested in
But so many times i see people lose sight of this, given there was such a notion to begin with, in all sorts of terrible ways.
So that said (: i totally feel u
I love how this video is like your sitting right in Elliott’s lap. A guitar player’s dream!!!
Yeah. I'm just watching realising I've been playing it all wrong haha
@@nickgrant6480 exactly! these songs are haunting as a player, you know you're never getting it quite right.
On one hand I love watching these Elliot videos, and then I end up sitting here with tears in my eyes…😢
here's the same
I had this on mp3 around 2006/7 and searched all over Elliott Sites and lime wire-esq sketchy torrents for footage, I literally gave up over 10 years ago. And today, I got a lovely surprise. His is certainly relaxed, but he keeps it together and the set-list is to die-for (wrong word) The shows after this are a little tough to watch. We know so much more about mental health and addiction these days..people get upset about dead rockstars and all that crap, but with Elliott people actually loved him. I literally listened his work until I was sick of it, and I had the same problem with the beatles...so I haven't heard him or this gig in years. So yeah, he's seriously up there with Lennon and Paul McCharmly in the songwriting stakes.
he battled through this to provide a gift that we can watch whenever we want.
I was like, "I thought I've seen all the live videos on here" and this was posted yesterday... This is amazing, thank you! It's amazing to see him live on, RIP forever the greatest! Now I can fix how I was playing some of these songs
I love how this and clementine live dropped out of nowhere
Still the best after all these years. Goosebumps every fucking time
Dude really was a one man band. He could do so much on the guitar, I wonder how difficult some of these songs were to the play towards the end.
So grateful every time someone posts a new live video of Elliott- I’m a “professional” musician and teacher and as a player I cant express enough how he was a master of his craft, a genius, poet, and still the best- no one comes close- and if your reading this I assume you already know
The super secret chords. ❤
I don't think any of us knew that just about a year later, we'd lose him forever. I never got a chance to see him live. But thankfully people captured these moments in time.
TY. Any new Elliott footage is pure gold. Makes me wonder how much more is out there.
After many years I thought we had seen the last of any live stuff, but then this came, along with the clementine performance on that morning show. Maybe there is more. I'd love to see any footage performing or not. Love the guy.
exactly what I was thinking
I love seeing new footage of him, too young and the wrong part of world to ever see him play live so this shit means the world to me. 💜
i spent a large portion of my young adulthood obsessed with this guy and thought i'd seen every live show captured! so wonderful to see something new. miss this man's music :)
This is amazing. Many thanks to the person who uploaded the video and to you for merging it with the audio bootleg. I was in the second row that night, to the right of this angle. Elliott was in rough shape during this time, often slurring between songs, and we were always worried about him being able to get through a show. As concerning as that was, once a song started, it was completely mesmerizing. You're lost inside his music, and all was forgotten. This set captures all of that. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the openers that night were Daniel Lanois and Rilo Kiley, and this was a benefit show for Jennifer Teft, the head booker for the Echo and Spaceland.
yes, i didnt get a chance to get to his show. but friends that did during this time would report back and it seems that one night show would be flawless but the next week or so different story. he was an amazing talent with demons too familiar
At @41:03 or so, someone in the crowd yells "Steven" and Elliott says "That's right, howd ya guess?" I assume this person was trying to be clever knowing that Elliott's birth name is Steven. Elliott then says "Drozd" isn't here right now, a reference to Steven Drozd, the drummer of Flaming Lips. I don't know if Steven Drozd was known by others in that scene at the time, but he did play drums on one Elliott Smith song "Coast to Coast".
Chord progressions on Better Be Quiet now is cra cra. So hard to play. Love you Elliott, thanks for sharing your special gift with us while here. Always remembered
As a massive Elliott fan, I have to say that even though his voice and playing are a bit shaky here given the situation at the time, his voice sounds probably the best I've ever heard it here. Maybe it's because of how close the camera is, and it's picking his natural voice along with the Mic. Anyways, videos like this really make me miss him, and remember my own absolute fascination back when I first discovered him a few years ago, and how I spent at least a couple years listening to little else but him, and marveling at his guitar parts while I deconstructed them. This video makes me realize that had he not died, we would have gotten more of this. He was so amazing, and thank you so much for uploading this.
I just cry , every time i hear elliiotte now ny heart falls out and flops like a fish outa water . So Painfrll.
Too beautifull to handke in this day and age .
Thnks aaron e. For; introducing elliotte to the prophet !

Love to see him do some deep cuts. "Punch and Judy" is such a great song.
Hearing him play Long Long Long after apologizing for being away. ❤ And that look when he begins Between the Bars.
IS THIS JUST A COMPLETELY NEW SHOW THAT WE'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE?
This is an incredible set...Thank you for the music you left us Elliott...
ive been a elliott fan for almost a year, i usually never leave comments, but this is probably one of his best lives during the 2 years he was depending on substances, i mean obviously this is around the time he started getting better, he was just a big help for me during a dark time and i loved this one.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's saved my life on several occasions. Soaking into the sharp emotion always seemed like the better option than feeling nothing at all.
I had to pull away from it
i believe this is the first show he did after he got out of rehab. He appears completely sober in this as opposed to say the 02/01/2003 show or the 2001 shows
I didn't realize this was new footage until I read the comments. Amazing. Such a candid shot. As a guitar player, and a big Elliot fan, it's really nice to see how he plays these songs up close. So many good songs. Great show.
was there that night, thanks for uploading. Quality is great! All of the eventual basement songs sounded so much better with just Elliott and an acoustic, IMO.
I would give both my arms to get into the time machine and be there. What was the atmosphere like, how is the video different from your experience? Were you high (lol)?
@@ianlennoxx wasnt high but pretty drunk by the end of it. If I remember right, jenny lewis opened up, not a big fan but with Elliott it was a great mood. People were really excited. It was full house but he seemed more together than a few months later at spaceland, where things seemed to be taking a toll on him healthwise (IMO anyways). Id seen Elliott 5 times but this was my favorite acoustic show of his. I was probably back 20 feet or so, so its pretty cool to have a view this close up!
This just became my new favorite Live, Solo Show of Elliott
Rest Easy , Mr. SMITH ,, not the name I call you with.
Wow- I’m gonna end up watching this one 50x like all the others…… just got to half right- which this is the best live version of now
Woah.. Something to lose-Heatmiser on acoustic
Thank you for making this. I forever watch the concerts with shitty audio cause I enjoy seeing him play so much, it's nice to have the best of both worlds .
Amazing 🤩
Just watched “heaven adores you”. They are right. Generations will come to find his music and love it. I was 2 when he died. Utterly amazed everytime I see or hear him play or even just speak. Fly high Mr. Smith. 1 common denominator amongst you and others that are still beloved. You are timeless. Thank you.

Great singer and great songs!!! Awesome!!!
I have no words... thank so much for posting this amazing video, he is really great, beautiful and his songs move my heart... never tired to listen to his music... missing you, sweet unforgettable Elliott
The amount of pain in his voice during this concert is absolutely astonishing. Especially during the last few songs.
We love you Elliott!! Whether you can hear us or not.
You cannot understand his happy you uploading has made me
Awesome show! Great artist; Great crowd.
This video is very important!
what the heck ! amazing find
Thank you for posting... it's always great... so talented musician and so sensitive fragile soul, beautiful angel face, never forgotten, he will live for ever in my heart... never tired to listen to his songs and guitar.
haven't seen this before! a genuine, well-done show played with skill and heart
what a freakin killer setlist. miss you ES
First and only time I've heard a recording of him playing Punch and Judy live. Precious. Thanks for posting!
Great job on this! God he was great. I can't wait to sharpen my guitar skills on all these songs. Long live, Elliott! xo
SO intersting to see his left hand up close! thanks 🙏
And immediately saved to favorites.
Thank you for sharing. I actually drove by to attend this show but the line went around the block. I wish I would’ve tried because it was one of the few times he played Miss Misery live. I caught him live a couple months later in 2003 at Spaceland though, he did an amazing version of “Strung Out Again”. Thanks so much, I have a cd of this show but it’s great to see him playing it live here.
Holy shit. This is new!!!
I love you forever, Elliott. 💙
This made me cry... god I wish I was there.
God I love The Echo, small intimate venue where you can feel everything the artists mean in their songs
This is gold, thank you so much !
He is an alchemist. Funny how he wears that shirt that says I ❤metal. There is a level of depth to it, much more than meets the eye for sure.
Thanks for sharing, amazing footage, amazing playlist. Clearly high, but still.. great show!
How do u know??
at this point he was recovering, i believe this was actually not long after his amino acid treatment thing
his voice sounds so weary and fragile and beautiful
Nice! He started off with a banger
