They may not have liked what he said, but they would begrudgingly accept if they stepped to far out of line with some of them. This is also a good time, now that the meteoric rise of our industry is starting to level out (or took a humbling sock filled with rolled up quarters to the face for those actually working in the industry) to do something we really should have done near the start of the first spike in the industry, "preservation of our history". With eyes falling from the push for bigger, better, prettier, and staggeringly expensive games, how we interact with, make accessible, and redistribute our history should be a serious question with long term thought and plans. The point about Gen Z being console agnostic is so true. I've been playing Nintendo games for years but would never consider myself a 'nintendo fangirl'. I happily play friends' X-boxs or Playstations and have never once in my life felt the urge to defend Nintendo in a comment section lol. If Nintendo started putting their exclusives on PC then I would never buy another one of their consoles again. If a game doesn't have cross-platform multiplayer then I don't buy it. If I can't play with my friends because of console limitations, then there's no point in me even owning that game.

    • @SolaScientia
      @SolaScientia 4 місяці тому +20

      Same. I only got a PS5 because Bloodborne is a PS exclusive and I learned that the PS5 would play nearly all PS4 games, so that's what I went with to play a game that is now one of my favorites. Had it been on PC or Xbox, then I might have gone that route instead. Luckily it works out that the games that I want to play are either on multiple platforms or already exclusive to PlayStation. I'd been considering a Switch for a while, but at this point I might as well wait until the Switch 2 releases. I might snag one if it'll be backwards compatible with Switch (Switch 1?) games.

    The assumption of the middle is that both ends are standing in their spot in good faith, and I think it's magical thinking to say that an industry is going to temper itself. There has not been evidence of this historically in any medium on a meaningful scale.

    • @heychrisfox
      @heychrisfox 4 місяці тому +12

      It's hard to say. When looking at artistic mediums, it tends to go through periods of booms and busts. But we live in a weird time where the industries have only known booms. However, at least in television/cinema, we're starting to see the bust. Major theatrical blockbusters don't bust the block any more. Even the safest remix or redux of a classic series can flop. Before, the goal was to put all your eggs in one very safe basket, and let it make lots of money; now, the cost of production is so high, that if that one basket happens to have rotten eggs, you could lose all that money.
      Gaming is in a similar place to all that. AAA studios are only focusing on their breadwinners, the cost of production is rising astronomically, and lots of their blockbuster AAA games are flopping. Is that just bad luck, a minor trend, or is that the beginning of a crash? We can't see, because there's not hindsight for us. The big difference with gaming and cinema, however, is that indie gaming is EXTREMELY profitable and culturally influential. An indie game company can release a banger in a way that an indie movie will never get such acclaim. So the overall metrics for the industry will always look good so long as there are a few healthy indie releases (which, frankly, there will always be).

Their point was that for the past decade or two the entertainment industry as a whole has rarely seen a bust and the executives have forgotten what its like to not hit bigger year after year. Gaming I'd say has been particularly susceptible to this kind of delusion because it had a niche appeal in 2000 and by 2024 it has spread across the globe through significant portions of almost every single demographic and country.

    Doing great Frost, thanks for asking!
    A point I'd like to highlight in your video is how flush we are of choices when it comes to games to play, even for the most niche of genres. So when I get told by friends and family there's "nothing good to play" despite all the untouched games wallowing in their Steam libraries, I have to remind them that the indie scene is brimming with dozens of quality titles that came out just this year alone. And that's not even including all the great stuff from years ago that feels like it was tailor-made for my tastes.
    There's plenty of fish in the gaming sea. You've just got to cast out the net instead of waiting for one to rise to the top.

    • @zUJ7EjVD
      @zUJ7EjVD 4 місяці тому +7

      In my view, that is a curse rather than a blessing. We've lost all scarcity of games and we're left with a scarcity of time. Rather than a new great game being an exciting event it's yet another one to add to the backlog and somehow make time to play before you die. Any time spending a fun game could be better spent playing a game that's both fun and fulfilling, and I still need to get around to learning piano like I've been meaning to.
      We don't need to ever try new things, we don't need to ever be bored, and we don't need to ever touch grass. That middle one, losing our boredom, is the worst in my view. Our boredom is probably what generates 90% of our humanity and that is basically erased.

    • @HiddenGemsReviews
      @HiddenGemsReviews 4 місяці тому +7

      @zUJ7EjVD To be honest, I can't see it as a curse. The backlog issue I see a lot of people have is a curse of their own choosing, rather than an issue of boredom.
      There's plenty of new stuff to try, new things to do, and new skills to learn. Adjusting your time management to allow those things you're genuinely excited to play/do instead of throwing yet another, "I'll get to this when I get to it" game into the cart is far more of a personal issue than anything else.
      Take a step back, realize you don't need something just cause it's 75% off, and play something to completion instead of for a couples hours then never again.

      @@zb3268 I think Mihoyo squandered a lot of it's soft power from Genshin on the Honkai ads. What goodwill they'd built kinda flopped because it wasn't obvious if it'd be a smooth transition from Genshin to Honkai for most players. Honkai/ZZZ/whatever the f they're calling it now seems to be doing well finally though, so it seems like they're getting some power back.
      It's also worth noting that their business model of "create a new marketable character" doesn't lend itself terribly well to brand recognition like Fortnite or LoL eSports. Brand partnerships/sponsorship deals are much less of a draw with that. If they can make a successful anime bid though, we could have another pokemon-sized media empire on our hands. Hell, they could probably make bank by doing partnerships with clothing brands, too.

    I wish I could remember the convention it happened at but I remember there was a public talk in my teens where part of the industry had already figured out some games were going to be "Forever Games" and they were going to have 40+ year old people religiously living on these games and they were trying to figure out how to support them with more and more complex mechanics. At the time I think the discussion was centered on Ultima and Everquest. It's been interesting watching different gaming communities rise and fall and re-define what genres even are in the past 20 years.

    I’ve really missed playing more story heavy games but even if they were thick on the ground, I just don’t have the bandwidth, especially these last few years. Long Dark still gets occasional content updates that keep things just interesting enough to return day after day.
    So that’s what my gaming present looks like.
    Also there’s a bunch of very very sad boys who are trying to make gg happen again and it really puts into perspective how much things have changed. art and publicly traded company can't go together

      @Tohlemiach 4 місяці тому +10

      This is the same conclusion I keep coming to as well. I get that investment capital can do wonders for an economy, and it works to generate jobs and growth, so it's not as if it's inherently bad to invest just to make money off of your investments, but again, look at the way these sorts of things started. The whole idea behind "patreon" is from the concept of a "patron", where rich people would pay artists to make them good art. They weren't "investing" the same way someone would charter a ship so a Portugese merchant would buy a kilo of spice from India to sell to the Spanish. In that case the noble doesn't care whether or not the art of Indian cuisine flourishes or not, and likely such transactions don't really have a direct effect on such a thing. There was a sense that there's a difference between making money and spending money.
      Totally opposite world when it comes to today and we treat every single avenue of human activity as just another way to make money. In the past people used to spend money to make money, and then they'd, you know, just kind of "spend" their money too. So few people with capital are willing to spend their money on the production of things that can be enjoyed for their own sake. The thing I would do if I was a billionaire making millions every day off of my stock earnings is take all of that free money I'm getting and just become a patron in every industry I wanted to consume content in. Sponsor a bunch of studios to make cool games, sponsor all kinds of movie and tv startups. Instead these people just use their money to ruin art. All so they can buy another yacht. Maybe we just need more gamers to become millionaires/billionaires.

    • @Tiwill
      @Tiwill 4 місяці тому +10

      @@maninblack3410 He wasn't talking about 'artsy' games. All video games are made by artists and are therefore art. But when the investors and business people are the ones making the most decisions on what gets made and how it gets made, games become mere products because the artists were not the ones in charge of the vision, they were effectively just workers. Cogs in a machine.

    • @Tiwill
      @Tiwill 4 місяці тому +2

      @@maninblack3410 I'd argue the industry is currently in shambles, chasing trends and audiences that don't exist because the investors are out of touch and aren't letting the artists cook. It's important to remember that it's not a binary thing; a masterpiece won't sell if it isn't marketed properly, but a game made by committee probably won't sell either no matter how much it's marketed. Every person has a role to play in the development of a game, they just need to stick to what they do best. The money people have the money, the talented people have the talent.

    One major point to add though, if the games industry isn't growing exponentially, you're going to have much less of an influx of investors seeking to gain value off of stock and funding new studios. Private companies won't be hit as hard since the shareholder pool is smaller and valuation fluctuates less, but larger, public studios will (and have been) cutting staff rapidly to try and appease their shareholders. The expectation of unlimited growth is a problem with our economic system, but the effects people feel from that are nonetheless real.

I think it's right to say it comes from stability. The global distrobution network is as good as it can get. There isn't anything left to develop, and no new space to grow. I feel as though the future and current of gaming is going to be more about the indies. I know I'm super bias but when I think of AAA I often think the same thing as Blockbuster movies. Same few story's, mechanics and characters being regurgitated with pretty graphics that sell the next bit of hardware. When I look at indies I see players ether creating experiences that are inspired by there own childhood games or doing something wild and original that no one thought of before. AAA is always going to exist but I see indies as becoming more of the focus for a lot of games. You only need to look at the trend of bombs from the past two years to see that a lot of players are getting sick of the same live service formula.

    Dear Editor... i would like to request a change in style... when Frost has finished, can you fade/end the music so the chipmunk doesn't pierce through steel with a sudden insert? not asking for anything else, just a fade, actual end of Frosts segments. those two voices do not compliment each other in sudden succession at those volumes, or fade in the end sponsor segment so it doesn't just stab the ears.
    it's an audiophiles request. Frost, with a voice like that deserves volume, but that same volume isn't as complimentary the ear or to the aesthetic of this content. that's all i request. a balance/fade/end whatever it takes... i'm sure you remember, at least, i remember, adverts on TV being exceedingly louder than the show. that's what this reminds me of and, it's the only feedback i've managed to conjure up in this entire time of the new channel, so, it's not imperative but would be appreciated, to the tone and mood of these Cold Takes.
    ad i don't mean fade in of more than a second, i'm not a monster. just so the initial vocal burst isn't.... obnoxious.
    also... my day... could be better, could be worse. i'm okay. thanks for asking. i hope all of the Second Wind team are doing something fun or find something interesting in their days. stay hydrated, be smart and don't be afraid to say NO. i mean, never say it. but if you have to, don't be afraid of saying it.

But I concede that the Factorio devs reasoning is sound and their game is worth it. That said I DO wish it had been a tad more obvious that no sale ever was their choice and their tactic. Not just luck of the draw. I personally waited a LONG time for the game to go on sale. Completely from the owners perspective, if the store page had mentioned it instead of me having to find out from a discussion board they would have gotten their money a lot sooner. So it's not completely on me.
