There are so many on the market apart from the MultiFinish you mention / Board Finish / Finishing Plaster and even one called 'One Coat'. Area less than one square meter! Thanks
It doesn't really mater for a patch like that - Board Finish would be fine. It's that or use a filter like British Gypsum Easyfill which would be better for blending into existing. But to not confuse things, Board Finish is fine pal 👍
@Plastering For Beginners Thanks for reply and clarifying 'Board Finish'. 👍Given what you've said though - may go for the 'Easi-fill' - as I can then use rest around the house making good for decorating. Only drawback more expensive :(

Hi Blaine, great video. A question please. I've knocked 400 to 500mm of old plaster effected by rising damp above the skirting board. I've already pva'd the brickwork with a 1 to 6 mix and then saw for that perhaps you shouldn't apply pva with thistle Hardwall. Will it be OK to go ahead mate? And should I apply a 3 part pva 1 part water mix just before plastering with hardwall. Also if I'm covering with wallpaper, so long as I smooth off well, will I get away without a finishing coat. Finally even though I've applied the 6 to 1 pva should I apply a salt retarding solution before plastering. FYI I have installed a new DPC using safeguard Drirods. Many thanks.
Great videos, thanks for doing such a great service! Quick question please. I have some largish patch to plaster where bricks are exposed. I was thinking of doing a sand/cement render then multi finish BG ontop of that rather than using the hardwall plaster? What do you think? Thanks.
What to do if a plasterer has left his second coat of sand and cement without doing the scratches for the first plaster coat? It's been a few days since it was done so has dried. I'm going to attempt to do it myself as its only a small bit of wall in the porch. Thanks
So much appreciation, for sharing your knowledge... Doing diy around my studio flat, and a little gypsum here, skimming there... loving learning, new things, especially when you cant afford someone to come in and wave a wond for you... even better when you get your hands dirty and push yourself to doing things through covid, you may not otherwise learn and enjoy, thank you 😘
Hi mate. Yes you can trowel it flat which removes any aggregate from sitting on the surface. This provides a much smoother finish. Hope this helps matey!
I was wondering what's the best plaster out there for crafts/home decor? I've only used Plaster of Paris but I'm not sure if there are other Plasters that are stronger and take color more than POP! Anything helps! Thanks! :)
You can get it up to roughly 10mm thickness before it starts sagging - you can get a really thin layer with it too. It's very versatile! I usually PVA before skimming mate, especially if you've left it a day to dry!
Plasterboard is the quickest but which is the cheapest. Obviously time is money. But working on my own house it would only be the cost of materials. Not a fan of the hollow sound of a plasterboard wall or wrestling with them into place. Also which is warmer?
To be honest mate there really isn't much in it - i'd actually say plasterboard is cheaper and easier. However, if you can do it in solid then I would advice it because it's 10x better 👍
Great video!!! Do I need to apply any product over drywall before apply plaster? The dry wall is painted and I want to do a fake brick texture over that using something rougher than compound joint. Thanks
Blaine, just signed up for your online course. Love these videos, everything is well explained and you make it look achievable for a beginner. Can’t wait until I move house so I can try my hand at this, I have only done small sections so far but would love to tackle a whole room!
Great videos. I I have a fairly decent wall, with a few holes about a cm big. I was wondering whether I could use multiple finish and then pure finish over the top? or should I used bonding and then multi finish? Many thanks
Brilliant video m8 . I'm still learning thanks to your videos. I'm used to taping and filling . But much prefer the finish. 2 things in struggling with. One is weeks after I did around a front door I cannow see the mesh of the corner bead shining through. Also a video on how to do rounds from ceiling to wall would be great also. Keep the vids coming bud. All the best
Hi mate! Thanks for the support pal - was it a standard corner bead? It might have been fitted wrong which can sometimes lead to the wing of the bead sitting higher than the plaster. It's a bit of a bitch when it happens so I'm sorry to hear that pal. I'll try and get a curve video sorted soon by the way. Cheers and thanks again for the support!
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks alot for your reply m8. The vid would be great. As for the beads the only thing I had were plastic ones which I found to be a ball ache . To fix
The Thistle Bonding you use looks like plaster. However I have used the exact same Gypsum Bonding Purple Bag. It looks like a render when mixed though. Have they changed it?
Great video What would you use for a smallish patch that needs doing where the plaster had bubbled due to possibly penetrating damp or leak. Would easyfill work on areas up to half meter square. Thanks
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks I believe the issue was thorn plants and ivy growing on the outside up the downpipe. When it rained the water would soak into the wall as didn't run to the ground fast enough (I think) These plants have been removed and the wall was wet behind this area.
So what do you use to patch up where old plaster has come off and revealed the brickwork underneath? Not bonding as it is not for high suction, hardwall? I have a three foot by two foot area where the old tikes pulled off all the plaster when removed.
Blaine, do you ever do anything with lime plaster, the reason I ask is that I am doing an old brick terraced house which has had damp issues mainly because someone has replaced the old lime plaster at floor level with cement resulting in the wall being unable to breath and all it’s done is chase the damp and salts higher. Since I knocked the cement off the bricks have dried out.
Novice question here. What plasters, preparation and techniques to patch repair an internal face of an old house brick wall? The plaster fell away on removal of a radiator. The depth from the existing plaster surface to the exposed brick is approx 20-22mm.
Do you know what, I've never really gave it a chance but people really do swear by it. My merchants don't even sell it which is probably a reason why I haven't used it much ha! I'll bear this in mind though. Maybe do a video to test which ones the best! Thanks for the heads up my friend 👍
What is it that board finish can do that thistle multi-finish can't do? Because the majority of superb finishes I've seen over many years has always been multi-finish.
Can I use the bonding for my hole in my wall ? It's about 1ft by 1ft hole and 2 inches deep - its where BT hit a water pipe. It is backing on to breez block? Thanks I've got bonding and multi finish - I was thinking of filling the majority with bonding and finishing it off with multi finish! What you think mate?
I have a few interior ceilings which have Artex on them. I want them flat now! Which plaster would you recommend to put directly on to it to save me digging it all off & causing a mess? Would I need bonding then multi-finish? Or could I use just multi-finish alone? (Or one coat plaster) Also do you think it would be best to chip the artex'd points down first? Cheers.
Hi mate! You can take the high spots off from the Artex but you risk releasing potential Asbestos into the air. If you can avoid it, then do. You can plaster a thick coat of BG Bonding on the ceiling and finish it with BG Multi Finish then that would be your best bet pal 👍

Seeing that this old wall plaster im plastering is over 1 inch thick do you know if you can apply a 3rd coat of hard wall or is that too much?
Great videos, thanks for doing such a great service! Quick question please. I have some largish patch to plaster where bricks are exposed. I was thinking of doing a sand/cement render then multi finish BG ontop of that rather than using the hardwall plaster? What do you think? Thanks.
Hi Blaine What’s the best plaster for filling in chases to an external cavity wall in a lounge
It's probably best to use Bonding followed by Easyfill mate. It's a lot more flexible that standard plaster 👍
Great information 👍
I’m going to try using Hardwall
Good to see some good plasterers are still out there 👍🏻
Cheers mate!!
Cheers mate!!
Thanks for posting,, well explained,, didn't know hardwall could be applied straight to a block wall. 👍👍
Not a problem, hope it's helped!
Doing diy around my studio flat, and a little gypsum here, skimming there... loving learning, new things, especially when you cant afford someone to come in and wave a wond for you... even better when you get your hands dirty and push yourself to doing things through covid, you may not otherwise learn and enjoy, thank you 😘
Great video, what would you use for electrical/plumbing chases please?
Regarding thistle hard wall plaster - how many coats can I lay as there is up to 2.2cm difference in some places?
Hi, is there another type finish to sand and cement other than a sponge, great video by the way .
Thanks! :)
Could you please make some videos about decorative plaster?
So how thick and how thin can you put bonding plaster on, and do you have to PVA it before you skim it ? Great video on different plaster.
You can get it up to roughly 10mm thickness before it starts sagging - you can get a really thin layer with it too. It's very versatile! I usually PVA before skimming mate, especially if you've left it a day to dry!
@@PlasteringForBeginners super cheers buddy nice to get advice, do appreciate it. Keep videos coming.
Thanks
Great video. So many products, its easy to get lost.
Thanks for video - very helpful - Dot and dab is very bad for soundproofing to note! :)
Exactly what I was looking to learn...much appreciated
Blaine, just signed up for your online course. Love these videos, everything is well explained and you make it look achievable for a beginner. Can’t wait until I move house so I can try my hand at this, I have only done small sections so far but would love to tackle a whole room!
Thank you my friend! Let me know how you get on - I hope you enjoy it!
@cleancutrenovationspecialistltd
To fix
Not a problem mate. I try to avoid the plastic beads for finishing because they can be a pain. Hope it works out next time pal. Cheers!
The Thistle Bonding you use looks like plaster. However I have used the exact same Gypsum Bonding Purple Bag. It looks like a render when mixed though. Have they changed it?
It just depends on where is mined mate - some of the Gypsum is brown whilst others are grey. It's the same product though pal 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners Thank you God of Plastering! I was getting highly confused lol.
Great video
What would you use for a smallish patch that needs doing where the plaster had bubbled due to possibly penetrating damp or leak.
Would easyfill work on areas up to half meter square.
Thanks
The problem is that if you don't fix the problem then it will keep coming through!! The best solution is to solve the damp issue first really.
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks
I believe the issue was thorn plants and ivy growing on the outside up the downpipe. When it rained the water would soak into the wall as didn't run to the ground fast enough (I think)
These plants have been removed and the wall was wet behind this area.
So what do you use to patch up where old plaster has come off and revealed the brickwork underneath? Not bonding as it is not for high suction, hardwall? I have a three foot by two foot area where the old tikes pulled off all the plaster when removed.
hardwall yeah, i have the same issue
Blaine, do you ever do anything with lime plaster, the reason I ask is that I am doing an old brick terraced house which has had damp issues mainly because someone has replaced the old lime plaster at floor level with cement resulting in the wall being unable to breath and all it’s done is chase the damp and salts higher.
Since I knocked the cement off the bricks have dried out.
What type of sand you can use with the cement please and what do you thing about airless plaster and dry lining . Many thanks
I use Sandgate plastering sand pal 👍
Novice question here. What plasters, preparation and techniques to patch repair an internal face of an old house brick wall? The plaster fell away on removal of a radiator. The depth from the existing plaster surface to the exposed brick is approx 20-22mm.
Cant miss board finish... best one out there lol well for me lol. Great vid
Lincoln Lee I wasn’t a fan of board finish.
Hey Blaine, when it comes to BG Hardwall should I use Bluegrit below it so the wall grips the undercoat entirely?
Watched plenty of plastering videos left me even more confused lol yours made alot of sense so been out brought some tools for the job wish me luck 👍
Thanks pal. Good luck with your plastering 👌
Very informative and useful video, many thanks!
Thank you pal!
Really helpful video, cheers for taking the time to make it.
Can I use the bonding for my hole in my wall ? It's about 1ft by 1ft hole and 2 inches deep - its where BT hit a water pipe. It is backing on to breez block? Thanks
I've got bonding and multi finish - I was thinking of filling the majority with bonding and finishing it off with multi finish! What you think mate?
Sounds like that would work really nice in your hole Nick
Great videos. I heard bonding isn't recommended in bathrooms etc. due to it being absorbant. Is that a myth?
It's not the best product to use mate - it's not recommended!
I have a few interior ceilings which have Artex on them.
I want them flat now!
Which plaster would you recommend to put directly on to it to save me digging it all off & causing a mess?
Would I need bonding then multi-finish? Or could I use just multi-finish alone?
(Or one coat plaster)
Also do you think it would be best to chip the artex'd points down first?
Cheers.
Hi mate! You can take the high spots off from the Artex but you risk releasing potential Asbestos into the air. If you can avoid it, then do. You can plaster a thick coat of BG Bonding on the ceiling and finish it with BG Multi Finish then that would be your best bet pal 👍
Not a problem pal 👍
Excellent guide video!
Hi I need to plaster my bathroom ceiling and wall I would use waterproof paint after but do you know what type of plaster to use for that ?
Just standard Multi-Finish as long as the wall isn't in direct contact with water 💦
Plastering For Beginners thank you
Excellent excellent video. Cheers dude!
Thank you so much pal!!
Can you paint sand-cement plaster?
You say 12.5 litres water to one bag of multifinish, what litre ridge to hardwall and bonding per bag?
Hi. Just like to say, great video. I would like to learn plastering for beginners, but the link doesn't work.
It does work pal. Try copy and pasting the link 👍
What's the mix for the sand and cement rendering?
I hoped we would get the ratious as well.
Is hardwall the same as browning?
