- Explore the versatility of using a cast pharmaceutical gelatin plate to create multi-layered images with MGNE artist Tamar Etigen. Tamar will use plant material and found objects to demonstrate how to create layered and colorful monotypes.
The workshop demonstrates a registration system allowing work on two prints simultaneously. This medium is non-toxic, low tech, versatile, very accessible and does not require a press.
Tamar Etingen is a multi-media artist and teacher currently concentrating on Gelatin Plate Monotypes. Tamar has exhibited sculpture, installations, paintings and prints in universities, galleries and museums on both U.S. coasts and in the state of New Mexico. She is a Master of Fine Arts (Vermont College of Fine Arts) and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (University of California Berkeley).
This program is hosted by the Monotype Guild of New England. The Monotype Guild of New England is a nonprofit organization of contemporary artists creating unique impressions by working in the medium of monotypes and monoprints. Founded in 1985 by a small group of New England artists, the Guild has curated over one hundred exhibitions and has expanded its membership to include artists from across the United States. I have watched way too many Gelli Printing videos on UA-cam. This is by far the most informative and the only artist that I have come across that approaches Gelli Printing with a Fine Art lens instead of the usual Crafting angle. Thanks Tamar your work is sublime!
An amazing talented artist! Thank you for sharing this a wonderful experience.❤
Your work is gorgeous. This video is very informative. I can’t wait to try this! Thank you!
I am unbelievably stunned by the paper engineering. How gorgeous and how fascinating they are. Do you show them on galleries?
Thank you Tamar. Your work - monoprints, artist books, sculptures- are beautiful fine art. I wonder if the Wenham Museum, with its focus on children, might love to display your artist books and sculptures . I am member of New England Experimental Art group and love to work with plant materials. I'm eager to try gelatin plate monoprints and found your presentation and improvisational method very inspiring.
Excellent! I think Tamara would like the golden open paint.
Erasing!!! Genius! What a simple idea and it changed my printing for the better. I would like to know the ratio of extender to paint and what acrylic paints Ms. Etingen prefers.
Wunderbar ❤
❤️ from Norway🇳🇴
PHENOMENAL work!! SO creative!
I had stopped❤ the video when the contact info came on the screen and asked my question about where you get the Gelatin. Next time I managed to see the Q and A where you answered tha6, thanks.😊
The plastic with all the holes is Sequin Waste. It is what is left over after they punch out the sequins. It comes in several different hole sizes.
It’s called punchinella.
CC is always funny but there are a few outstanding misinterpretations here. My favorite translates “here are my paints and brayers” to “here are my paints and prayers.” No wonder my prints don’t always turn out the way I hope they will; I’ve been forgetting to PRAY!
I dont understand why the commercial plates can’t do this same process?
admire artist talking about its craftsmanship … impressive the pragmatism in her learning … true meaning of an artist is repetition instead of inspiration … admire artists working instead of complaining about its condition in life and using politics to try to get relevance
“True meaning of artist” is inspiration + dedication. If I understand your comment, you seem to take issue with political art, which is a legitimate way to comment on (what you call “complaining”) society. For example, Picasso’s Guernica, his reaction to the Spanish civil war, and all of the art that followed World War I and II. Just because you don’t like political art doesn’t make it wrong.
Would you please let us know where you get your gel and how you pour the plates. I have been searching for pharmacological gel and am unable to find it.
Why will your multiple print method not work on commercial gel plates?
Thanks for this!
fabulous!
Demo starts at 18 minutes
So is a monoprint the product of the monotype process or is the product a monoiype itself? Very confusing but I ascribe to be an artist using the gel plate and I don't know how to label my work. Thanks.
Mono means single, so unlike lino or dry point etching or other printing techniques you one get one print from your design. If you want something similar you have to create all the layers again from scratch. As for the name, monoprinting is the process of making a monoprint. Hope that helps💛
