I've suffered from a similar receding hairline and a clean fade is definitely one of the worst haircuts to get. A messier hair cut will almost always look better with a receding hairline. There is also a lot you can do with the fringe to improve the look, its best to take a bit more off of the center of the fringe so that it falls more evenly over the forehead. You should be able to achieve this by pulling the fringe hair over the forehead and trimming it rather than down to the side. I would also recommend him to look into minoxidil and finasteride as it will dramatically thicken up the hair and prevent further hair loss.
