Yo bro using the shears and sectioning hair is actually much easier than fading and doing tapers! 95% of hair cuts are the same kind of cut as far as the hair cut itself the styling is what changed and also adding layers and keeping more length in areas like the fringe!! For this haircut you did good You can separate the hair with a part from the parietal ridge and pin the hair up then do your tapers or fades then drop the hair on top, saturate the hair take a middle profile section cut how much you want off and use that as a guide

I've suffered from a similar receding hairline and a clean fade is definitely one of the worst haircuts to get. A messier hair cut will almost always look better with a receding hairline. There is also a lot you can do with the fringe to improve the look, its best to take a bit more off of the center of the fringe so that it falls more evenly over the forehead. You should be able to achieve this by pulling the fringe hair over the forehead and trimming it rather than down to the side. I would also recommend him to look into minoxidil and finasteride as it will dramatically thicken up the hair and prevent further hair loss.
