If Palmer's book does not mention the cam cover, then this is another mistake. this is the right, and one year only cam cover for 1952. I, until this morning, had two original paint 1952's with this cam cover.
I LOVE these videos. I've been a Harley fan all my life and really appreciate seeing the classics, clean, stock or slightly modified bikes that have made it through the years. Great videos and wonderful information. Thanks for posting these.
Neat old bike and thanks for posting. Sadly the speedo is later. '52 had full numbers like 20, 30, and so on. Bags are later 54 - 56. Luggage rack not HD but more likely a later aftermarket offering. Never heard of a one year only timer cover. If you mean cam cover it's a -48 part number and can be found up through '53. Still a very original bike and thanks again for sharing.
Actually, these cam cover's are 1952 ONLY. I have two original paints with them, both 1952's. the speedo, like this one, was 1948 - 1955. In 1956 they changed to a gold face with orange needle. The number's are the same, 1948- 1955. 1956, same numbers but different color of the numbered glass over the gold face. the bags are, what most consider to be, accessory items.
yea, that one came with a nice pile, and an original paint 1947 Knuckle. I will post a link to that pile in the description section, you might enjoy that vid!
These speed ball bags I had, in brand new condition, on a 1950 with 6700 original miles, original owner, in brand new condition. Any accessory item sold within 5 years of new, prior or after the year of sale, is considered correct by AMCA standards. This rack is in several HD catalogs, Not all catalogs show all items every year. I don't know of anyone that I can name for sure that has every year catalog ever made. I know people who might, but I never asked them directly.
Have a 1952 Parts book? Many later editions often left out one year only parts changes. Similarly, if your part was continued with the same number, when you ordered it or got it on your machine later. The shape was often different, but the number in the book did not change. A good example are the gas caps. Same number for years, used 1936 -1973. YET, there are THREE different versions of the same part number. IE, it might indeed have the same parts number, yet still have it's own shape.
the throttle was the, at the time, standard internal wire type. 1973 saw the 1st external cable throttle we are familiar with today. I am not at all sure of the exact production figures on the 1952 models. I have owned both tank shift and foot shift for this year. 1952 was the 1st year of the optional foot shift
John Stone, youtube just made some weird change to the comment's section so that I cannot reply directly. I highly suggest you either bob that and enjoy it or sell and put the money towards a real bike that is complete. You will take years and tens of thousands to take a motor back to a stock bike. There were 3 basic ridged Hydra frames, 1948, 1949- early 1954, and 1954 - 57. You have to read the date code off the top motor mount to find out what year the frame is exactly.
Thanks! Could you mention how and where you found it! and add to the story was it expensive !was it reasonable? Did you get a good deal ? these are things that make it very interesting. One time I found a 47 Indian chief in full saddlebags in full dress! parked. and the owner of it, the farmer hired me to paint his barn,, and I seen the bike in the haymow down below behind the big double doors !! he said he parked it there after the war!! this was in Wisconsin outside of Stevens Point in about 1994 before I broke my back and had a spinal cord injury on my 360 El Bandido 1972 ball Taco
What's the story with the speedometer? The bottom level is the correct 52 blue, but the upper layer is the later green type glass and numbers. I guess at some point the glass got broken and was replaced with the 56-61 glass.?
hard to say. I have an NOS date code 1946 Speedo, electric trip stop that did not come out until 1938, 1936-37 face, with a black bezel. It's NOS< in the Stewart Warner box. They didn't toss shit out and parts was parts.
we have that book and often refer to it, but it is a referral only, it is not gospel. It has a lot of great information, but there are mistakes. The speedo glass has been changed at some point, however, the speedo is the correct blue face speedo with orange needle. this speedo was used 1948 -1955. The glass is where the number's are. The face itself is what is below the glass.
wonder if the condition had to do with a solider going to korea back then just like those very original musclecars left behind by boys that never came back from vietnam
would look good next to my 05 springer and a 36 knuckle , all in my fav color...black .all 3 in a row.......the perfect trio....the knuck with hp heads . only way it could be any better is a flathead in the mix too . emmm......a nice thought indeed . id leave the dirt dauber on there just to aggravate the nit pickers .
thanks Ted Mike again I just like I said just looking for one but the great and you I like your I like all your videos you're all great and go keep it up like a buddy
I just baught a1952 hydra-glide all there but someone put it in a swing arm framepaid 5 grand going to put back to stock Tod do you know what frameto use 1948 to 1957 are they all the same because 1958 they went 2 swing arm thanks
WOW. What a beautiful bike. Where is this filmed? In California? You must have a million dollars to buy bikes, lol. What a great way to live life. Cheers friend.
I feature bikes I have found to resell. Not bikes I went and interviewed and put on the channel (there are some exceptions). There are a few, very few, flatheads here. WHY? They are harder to find, MUCH harder to sell.
Is it legal to ride an older Harley without dressing like a clown? I mean not have a fucking beard, and a Harley cap that went out of style 50 years ago?
Well, how about the official MoCo parts book? It lists only one cam cover for 1948 - 1953. If the '52 is one year only why doesn't it have it's own part number?
The speedo is incorrect and no such thing as a one year only cam cover for 52. I would suggest reading Bruce Palmer's book How to Restore your Harley Davidson. All that info is in there......
Your videos make me appreciate bikes more and more. Thanks
Diesel_paid! then I am doing "my job" :)
look at this machine.. imagine it running on the streets in 1952..
No wonder whole world is obsessed with harley-davidson.

"Never heard of a one year only timer cover." so what makes you think it's wrong then? ONE YEAR ONLY for 52.

52. The year I was born. Very cool
Todd it's funny how many people try to dispute the 1 YEAR ONLY cam cover huh? Same one on mine. You kept your cool with them though..

Todd, how did the throttle operate on these bikes? I also noticed it has the optional footshifter. Was that rare for the '52? Thanks for all the info.
would look good next to my 05 springer and a 36 knuckle , all in my fav color...black .all 3 in a row.......the perfect trio....the knuck with hp heads . only way it could be any better is a flathead in the mix too . emmm......a nice thought indeed . id leave the dirt dauber on there just to aggravate the nit pickers .

Funny you say that, I think his style is on point 👌
Style? It's a fucking clown outfit!

Palmers book isn't right on a lot of things man, the cam cover for 52 is sand cast and it's ONE YEAR ONLY.
