Right? No frills, no convoluted back story, nothing to try and force the player to feel pity for him.
Kefka just wanted to watch the world burn...and add some more fuel to the fire while he was at it.
Also, unlike a fair number of the others, Kefka won. Sure, they came back and stopped him in the end, but the World of Ruin stands as testament to his victory.
Tekisasubakani Well, technically speaking there's evidence that he suffered from bipolar disorder, among other things (like being driven insane by magitek).
Not saying that justifies his actions, though. I still don't feel sorry for him, it just makes his actions easier to understand.

Superb rendition. The beginning captures the clownish goofiness of Kefka, then as the piece continues it sounds more manic and evil. Too many renditions try to sound epic right from the start.
Finally, a version with the heavy sound to the drums that I've always wanted. A lot of versions seem to 'downplay' the drums on this song.
If there's one thing Malcolm Robinson is damn good at, aside from making generally great remakes, its getting the drums right in a song.
After listening to this, my body is officially ready for your version of Dancing Mad, whenever it may be completed.
I can't wait to start working on it, but it definitely won't be anytime soon.

I love how it starts sounding innocent and clowney and then starts sounding menacing and dangerous, it's a great theme really fitting Kefka

This is literally the only game remix/remaster I've ever heard where both oompa and marching drums ACTUALLY WORKS. I can picture an ENTIRE ARMY of evil clown soldiers marching to this! ^_^

The funniest thing is, I have heard this song performed in the Character Medley from the Distant Worlds III Album and while what they did was good, think this remix captures the essence of the character. I especially love how the song is playful and chaotic, but that bass line just pushes the fact that you should dread how off in the head this character is. I also like the timpani buildup leading to the ritard and ending. Very well done sir.
+moogle847 Thank you! I just listened to that version and it sounds great! I agree with you though that it doesn't really capture the feeling of the original. I think it's because most orchestrators prioritize giving a piece a fresh and interesting sound over remaining faithful to the original. This also gives them a chance to show off their skills and gives everyone in the orchestra a chance to play. What I do is much simpler and probably shouldn't be called orchestration, but my goal is almost always to capture the original sound/feeling.

That's a fair angle, but when you're doing an orchestral version of music crested on limited sound hardware, I think giving it the proper sound it was meant to have over trying to personalize it is the better take. Yours is more proper.

Yes! I'm always excited to listen to your Final Fantasy covers (maybe one day I'll listen to Chrono Trigger's soundtrack....).
I really like how your orchestration combines Kefka's sneakiness, mischievousness, but powerful and threatening presence. A lot of other arrangers seem to not capture the original intent of the music in their remakes, which is (I feel) easier to run into when arranging 8 bit/16 bit music.
+KayMinEss D That's a great description of Kefka's theme! I think a lot of arrangers want to add their own signature to their work and they tend to make dramatic changes to the instrumentation and dynamics. I sometimes go a little overboard too, but for an iconic theme like this, I try to keep it as conservative as possible.

i feel that kefka is one of the villains with so much potential but a real pity is that he isn't fleshed out properly. but this re-arrangement captured EVERY li'l nuance of our favorite villain clown!
He is.. his development happens as you progress through the game. We see him grow in power and how it effects him. Apparently Square focused more on present tense than past based.
Joker called. He wants his reputation as most deranged clown back!
Best FF villain. Was a nobody, became a god, reached his dream and became nihilistic out of boredom, wanting to destroy everything because of it.

This is really good, but there is one thing I have a question about.
For the bombastic section that stats right on 0:34, I noticed the drum roll that should be on beat 3 of each measure is missing, and instead it's moved to beat 4 a few times. Was that intentional?
+Alex K That's right! I decided to add a snare hit for each cymbal hit, and while I was at it, I lined up the snare rolls with the long contrabass notes. In hindsight, I'm not sure whether or not this was a good choice, but I don't think it makes a big difference. Anyway, if I don't like it later, I'll try the original rhythm when I make the next version.
