At least it's less obscure than its predecesor and has official localization, and it has cultivated somewhat of a following. Maybe, just maybe, we'll someday get a remaster.
Im still listening to this in 2023. Thank you for doing this. It's my favorite arangement of this song. I literally get goosebumps listening. You captured the feelings so perfectly. The lonliness, and desperation that give way to a strong determined creature. But the desperation never goes away... There's always more evolution.. RIP Koichi Sugiyama
This brings back memories. E.V.O. was one of my first games and while it definitely had flaws, the sheer weirdness of its tone and story is very different from most games you'll see today. Several of Enix's games had a very...recognizable feel, with a focus on the evolution of either life or human civilization with oddly spiritualistic elements that often took both Western and Eastern religions as inspiration (E.V.O., ActRaiser, the Soul Blazer trilogy), which never really took off as well as those that followed a more traditional RPG style like Dragon Quest or Square's Final Fantasy, but I think it's neat that they tried several times to make games following a whole different set of tropes.
Bro yes well said. I feel like EVO and Illusion of Gaia make a good "double feature" about life on Earth. Robotrek is another interesting one with its near-future setting and comedic tone. Now that you're getting me thinking, I really do appreciate the risks Enix took with the tone and themes of their games
So sad you couldn't continue with these covers :/ this version is inexplicably BEAUTIFUL. As people also commented here, this version fits perfectly with the tension this first song makes us feel in the game. Hope you work in other songs from this game someday!
+CaelumDes Thanks! In my opinion, the EVO soundtrack is a little "hit or miss" and contains many compositions of questionable quality. The tracks that are good, though, are *really* good and definitely worth orchestrating. I hope I get the time to do them someday.
I will be definitely looking forward to that, I was desperately looking for more of these and couldn't find anything, I believe the boss fight theme and the sad track would be amazing for you to orchestrate, plus you are bringing attention to an amazing underrated game
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic I actually agree with you. When I heard the soundtrack, I felt like the composer worked his damn heart out on some of the music of the game, yet got rushed on the rest of it. Then I learned that some of the better songs in the game (Including this one) were originally from the game's predecessor, which I think is called "46 Okunen Monogatari - The Sinkaron." That leads me to believe that some aspects of this game were rushed. The theme for the Asteroid Belt, however, is an outlier; it wasn't in the original PC98 (PC88?) game, but it sounds fantastic (IMO).
man I'd love to see a modern attempt at this premise that really plays up the whole "journeying back through the incomprehensible vastness of time to the mysterious, shrouded eons of the Deep Past" angle that comes through in this song. put a lot of real science in there but still have it expressed through specific characters who can give it an emotional meaning and weight, and push the narrative along. if you kept up the whole "enigmatic melancholy" vibe where it felt like there was always so much more going on behinds the mists of heavily stylized and tragic prehistory, i think you could have a genuinely special experience that makes you think about your ancestors going allllllllll the way back
Beautiful remake Malcolm! Love this theme, it sounds very ancient and understated at the beginning, then gradually becomes heavy and powerful. For me it captures the ocean-dominated Ordovician and Silurian periods very well :)
This cover is absolutely incredible! This theme so fittingly evoked the mystery of the prehistoric world before land--endless ocean. The cover really gives voice to the full potential of this song. You do excellent work.
+Moop Bread Thanks! I'm actually surprised that there are so few covers of this track. Two EVO tracks were orchestrated for the Orchestral Game Music Concert series, but they left this one out for some reason. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it!
Wow! I didn't even play the original but I can just tell you must have enhanced it immensely! I like your description of the piece an the feeling it envokes.
+Ezekiel Pendragon Thank you! It's sometimes hard to justify putting a lot of effort into tracks like these because they don't get a lot of views, but I'm glad you liked it!
I just want to say: Epic. And yeah, what a weird beast EVO is. The first 30 minutes is just engrossing, both gameplay and music. And then it's like some other dev AND some other composer took over. So all the best music is basically in those first 30 minutes, and it's basically just this tune and the map music.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic E.V.O. was a sort of successor/reboot/remake of a game with a similar premise, but very different gameplay, called 46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinkaron (4.6 Billion Year Journey: The Theory of Evolution), which never got an official translation. The "good" music from E.V.O. is basically all remixes of tracks in that game, which had great compositions despite its primitive soundfont; while the new music made for E.V.O. was almost all terrible. Shinkaron also had a much more in-depth storyline that has a similar feel as E.V.O. (real-life prehistory but with aliens screwing things up) but leans hard into the weirdness with multiple alien civilizations taking central roles and an "anti-Gaia" in the form of Lucifer who for some reason looks like Marylin Monroe. It's a shame it never got a proper re-release, but emulations and fan translations of the game exist.
+jesusisbac Thank you! I've always liked games where you can evolve/shapeshift, and EVO made a really good impression on me with the first level. I guess that's why I had this one track in the back of my mind for all these years.
+Colin Roan Thanks! :) I'm also surprised that there are other people who know what it is. I was actually expecting to have a rather empty comments section on this one.
I'm glad that classics like these get shown up in your perfect orchestrations. Didn't even hear about this game, and I immediately went to get it after hearing your orchestral remix. Currently on Chapter 5, loving it. Thanks :D
Incredible! Not only is your orchestral adaptation beautifully faithful to the original in-game song, but it improves it by gradually sounding more intense, which I love! If only the original game's music did the same.
Thank you! I'm glad you like the idea behind my arrangement. I always thought it would be cool if the game featured dynamic music that adds more instruments as you evolve. Unfortunately, the SNES sound chip only supported eight monophonic channels for music, so this probably would have been impossible.
Excellently done. True words on both this theme's feels and the rest of the game music. It is clear that the composer spent all the time on this one and ran out of time to make equivalently epic stuff for the rest of the game. The title and overworld have a decent runner up position, and then everything else is just...a sad reminder that it is not The Ocean.
I just don't ever comment anything here at UA-cam but you made an incredible remix here with this song. You totally made it sound great, its immersive I felt like I was already playing that part in the game but imagined it all in 4K Haha. Loved it, hope to see more from EVO some day.
Love this game. Games were so much more creative back then. Every game now is a first person shooter or first person rpg. Bleck. This music captures the spirit so well
This reminds me of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea when the three land dwellers get their first panoramic view of the ocean through the Nautilus' giant sliding windows.
I hope you do Underwater Cave and Gia's theme! I grew up with this game and when I was a kid my brothers use to get so mad at me because I would leave our Nintendo on while listing to the music. You have no idea how happy this made me!
One more request to please do more of this! It sounds lovely and unique. I would definitely buy an iTunes release of 3-5 EVO tracks like you suggested in the description box. On top of that, the soundtrack from 46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinka Ron is good and contains some similar material from EVO [as its the spiritual father] -- might be worth a look.
I know this is a couple years old now, but I would absolutely love to hear more. :) This was a great cover for a game that I really wish would make a come back.
I love your remix, and also, like the half of the people here, I'm really surprised about finding more people that actually like this game, I'm from chile and here, me and my bro are the only ones that I know, that have played this game, the music is so marvellous, I love the rhythms it gots, but is so sad that at the moment you only remixed only one track ;-;, I hope you're going to make a new remix about other song soon, there is so much songs to play with that you have on the sound track❤
I found this game while looking for some good SNES RPG ROMS. ...and people say that Piracy harms more then it helps. It it wasn't for Piracy, enabling me to gain access to millions of games at no cost, I wouldn't be buying half of the games I own today. This is why services like Games for PSN+ is a step in the right direction. The proceeds of PSN+ can help support developers that people are downloading games of for free, while at the same time, giving both developers and gamers, exposure to great games that they may have otherwise sipped over and forgotten about. That aside; piracy is a double-edged sword; it helps, and harms. It's kind of like alchemy; you get a game you never heard of for free, at the cost of the possibility of there never being another game like it made by the developer.
+Scythe Ironclaw I think the majority of NES/SNES rom piracy happened at a time when the games weren't even being sold anymore, so it would be difficult to argue that it had any negative effect on the industry. Piracy of handheld games through flashcarts was an actual problem for Nintendo though. I personally feel that piracy is a very complicated issue that most developers/publishers don't fully understand. In the case of an unavailable old game like EVO, piracy (if we can even call it that) actually keeps the game alive.
Malcolm Robinson Music While allot of the points you stated are true. Downloading an unauthorized copy of an Intellectual Property is considered illegal because of these draconian copyright laws in the USA. To make matters worse, the TPP hopes to expand this corporate circle-jerking to a global scale. TPP for the Pacific Rim (not the movie) and a similuar bill for the Atlantic. If the TPP is passed, all piracy will be heavily enforced. Because Square Enix might decide to one day re-release EVO, they can claim that it is harming their potential profits, and sue you so bad, that your great-great-great grandchildren will be in debit. Even your videos would be deemed illegal under the TPP because you are making a cover of a "protected IP". The worst part; the TPP is under negotiations right now, it's almost here. I hope it doesn't get passed, but there is allot of corrupt white-collar blood money on the table. I hope this doesn't happen. I like being able to explore games of old, and discover other games that I might enjoy. I also enjoy mods, rom hacks, and video game music covers and remixes.
+Scythe Ironclaw I don't know the details about that bill, but I do know about the current policies related to covers (which are in a very different category from piracy/roms). Fortunately, there are licensing systems in place for covers that allow us to release albums legally with the consent of the publisher. Publishers are happy to issue licenses as long as you follow all the guidelines. More and more musicians and arrangers (myself included) are taking advantage of this to do everything legitimately. There is also a feature on UA-cam specifically designed for covers that allows us to split ad revenue with the publishers. If a cover on UA-cam triggers a Content I.D. claim (I've gotten three so far), you're forced into monetizing it and splitting the profit. It seems that the publishers' stance on covers is moving towards this kind of "cover tax" instead of just banning covers outright, which would cost a lot and give them no monetary benefit. This only applies to covers, not remixes. A remix (the legal definition, not the popular one) uses samples from the original source, so it's much harder to get a license for it. Since I only do covers, the worst case scenario for me is that all my videos get Content I.D. claims, which would certainly suck, but it wouldn't be all that bad because I'd be collecting most of the ad revenue.
Well at least with covers it's a bit more lenient than what goes on with Let's Player and Game Reviewers where there's a ContentID claim, and ALL of the AD Revenue goes to the claimant, instead of a 50/50 split.
This is indeed a masterful piece, building up the tension along with the epicness that goes with it. Keep up the sterling effort! Although I have simply stumbled upon this beautiful rarity (and before that, "Megalovania" from "Undertale"), I couldn't help but wish to request for a patriotic instrumental variation of the "Coast Theme", also from "E.V.O.: Search for Eden." That would be greatly appreciated.
well its not that its forgetable, its just that a lot of the tracks sound too much the same, you could argue that Super Mario 64 is like that... i knew the slide and snow themes were the same but it took me 17 years to realise that Bob omb Battlefield is also the same song, with EVO it all sounds too much alike that its too easy to notice
Amazing! (specialy to see anything from evo, that game's really a forgotten gem) Check the soundtrack of Legend of Mana for PS2, one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. I've been checking the kind of soundtrack you like to do and that's really close to your taste, do not mistake by the Secret of Mana that's another game for the Snes.
I've never heard of this game but, if the soundtrack is as beautiful as this orchestral version, I might as well try it someday. Is it possible to see a reorchestred version of "Ivor Tower - Town theme" from Secret of Evermore in the future? :)
+MysticLaian The soundtrack to EVO is from the same composer who did the music for the Dragon Quest series, so you can hear some similarities, but there are only a few really good tracks in the game. As for Secret of Evermore, it's unlikely that I'll do something from that game simply because I didn't play it. I remember hearing that Jeremy Soule did the soundtrack though, so maybe it's worth it for me to check it out.
+MysticLaian EVO is very very grindy. It's not a bad game, just super grindy. ...like they could walk next to a corn field with a cartridge and end up with cornmeal.
Actually, I find the soundtrack to E.V.O. pretty memorable throughout. You intentionally toned down some of the parts that made this track great though! Still good.
Had this game since I was a child on SNES. Still my favourite game! Lead me to become a Palentologist.
Really? wow
Tell us your story

and lol

BEST!
10/10!
+Александр Кадо Glad you liked it!
I love it, where could I download or guy this song ? :3
Essa música me faz sentir diferente... é bom...
Me faz se sentir triste.
oh man this is GREAT, could you please arrange the Earth's Overture theme for E.V.O ? It's sooooo epic
This is indeed a masterful piece, building up the tension along with the epicness that goes with it. Keep up the sterling effort!
Although I have simply stumbled upon this beautiful rarity (and before that, "Megalovania" from "Undertale"), I couldn't help but wish to request for a patriotic instrumental variation of the "Coast Theme", also from "E.V.O.: Search for Eden."
That would be greatly appreciated.
Woah!
Buying this game on a cartiage is expensive these days, thank god emulators exist.
I wouldn't say the tracks are entirely forgettable. I have most of the soundtrack and I listen to it often. Did you ever make more of these?
well its not that its forgetable, its just that a lot of the tracks sound too much the same, you could argue that Super Mario 64 is like that... i knew the slide and snow themes were the same but it took me 17 years to realise that Bob omb Battlefield is also the same song, with EVO it all sounds too much alike that its too easy to notice
If I had money to pay for such things I'd commission you to do more...
Amazing! (specialy to see anything from evo, that game's really a forgotten gem)
Check the soundtrack of Legend of Mana for PS2, one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
I've been checking the kind of soundtrack you like to do and that's really close to your taste, do not mistake by the Secret of Mana that's another game for the Snes.
I did a remix of this song long ago... your version is much better is wonderful
+Malcolm Robinson Music
HOLY DRAGON QUEST?! I've always wanted to play this game, now I definitely need to, and check out the OST if nothing else!
+MysticLaian EVO is very very grindy. It's not a bad game, just super grindy.
...like they could walk next to a corn field with a cartridge and end up with cornmeal.
You got to do the boss music for this game.
GOD YES
Essa música me trás melancolia.
The Asteroid Belt theme from this game needs to be remixed by somebody...
Wooooooooow
I am still waiting for another tribute to E.V.O :(
I'm not sure if/when I'll get around to it, but the next track will probably be Extinction.
extinction would be nice
and earth overture is another good choice
Please do a remix of "Amphibians Land"
Actually, I find the soundtrack to E.V.O. pretty memorable throughout.
You intentionally toned down some of the parts that made this track great though! Still good.
