These videos are soooooo helpful, please keep them up nd thank you so much for oyur hard work on them!! As someone who hasn't spoken in a long time it was a great way to have a casual listening practice and review words I had forgotten!
As to why the lawson spot is so popular, I dont know why either, but i have noticed the Lawson "image" gain popularity abroad since I moved from Japan about 13 years ago. It is commonly parodied in anime/manga/games/pop culture as a Japanese combini and I think, moreso than 7/11 which exists in a lot of foreign countries, has come to exemplify Japanese combini. In this way, when combined with a view of the stunning Mt Fuji, my guess is that it just gives people that 日本っぽい feeling you mentioned, together with a very instagrammable "city-pop" aesthetic. (Just a guess though 😅)
It makes me sad to see areas get more and more touristy to this level of extreme that overcrowding causes rudeness and inconveniencing of locals. I remember even just 15 years ago you could still go to popular tourist spots in Kyoto and not spot another foreigner. It's nice the country is more accessible, but it shouldn't lead to the disruption of communities like this, and as someone who lives in a very touristy part of the UK it's something that I unfortunately see frequently.

Ahhh haha I was just there and people are still taking pictures from across the Lawson which is great marketing for them but if only the tourists knew that going a few feet further would give them a far better view!! lol

I don't think foreign tourists are the problem, it's the fact they're so many tourists in Japan at this time. Local Japanese people wouldn't think to take this kind of photo because they see it all the time where as foreign tourists think it will make an interesting photo, it's a matter of perspective.
Then people say Japanese people would never do that because they are polite but it's not really politeness, it's more that they tend to hesitate because they are not sure if they should or not so they often end up not doing anything. I've seen Japanese tourists do rude things in Australia and Thailand but there's not that many Japanese tourists overseas, I think only 18 percent of Japanese people even have a passport, so again it comes down to numbers.
Plus the government and business sector are happy to have tourists because it boots the economy but local governments aren't really ready for the amount of tourists that are here. Local governments need to be more proactive and not just complain about how foreigners aren't respecting Japan's unique culture, they can't have it both ways.

Tourists are not the problem. People wanting to take photos of everything is the problem.
Ironically growing up in the 90s, this was considered a Japanese tourist phenomenon. Now the whole world is doing it.
Maybe I am just old. But I find taking photos of things to be very uneducated and pointless. Especially when you can easily find a photo of most landmarks on Google Images.
