I grew up listening to Whinny-the-Pooh on 75rpm records sitting on the floor of my bedroom. It was narrated by A.A. Milne himself and there were several records. The book I got for Christmas in 1956 for Christmas is on my bookshelf. A sibling has the records. My grandkids both read the book with me. The fact that the real Whinny was a Canadian bear made the entire collection of stories, records and memories all the better! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

I love that story so much haha. Beloved pet and mascot, surprisingly valuable member of the unit that only half-jokingly earned a promotion, and lived out the rest of his post-war days in a zoo where his army buddies would come visit to give him hugs and some smokes 😁

Fun fact: While they don't shy away from honey it's not the real reason bears attack bee hives. The baby bee larvae let the honey was made to feed are Chuck full of protein and other things bears really like, especially when trying to fatten up for the winter.

We literally won ww1 and most of ww2. We declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor was bombed forcing the USA to join the war only a couple of years before it ended and they took credit for a lot of the liberation of camps Canada did with Britain. Since we liberated Holland and France, Normandy has a huge memorial monument on the beach to the Canadians and the town has Canadian flags. Dutch love Canadians. Our military got smaller in the 80s when that pm made an agreement with the USA to follow their lead. Sadly, if Trump wins, every country in the world will target the USA and I'm afraid Canada will suffer.

So many of the characters represent the trauma and later adaptations of the survivors of the Great War. Piglet's stutter was one of several easter eggs designed to help understand traumatized veterans of that era.
My dad’s father and his three brothers all fought during WWll. Two on the Mexican border and two in France. The oldest brother had graduated medical school, after 3 years, in 1913. Before the US entered the war he worked as a Vet on ships bringing horses over to Europe.
If anyone is interested there used to be "History Minutes" broadcast on Canadian television and one of them featured a dramatized version of this story. Canadian kids growing up in the '90s were very much aware that Winnie the Pooh was in fact Canadian - you can probably see the video on UA-cam :)

A long legacy of joy grown out of a historic moment of immense pain and destruction in Europe. Winnie the Pooh is worth having in the world. I wish he had grown out of something more peaceful. I imagine some of those Canadian horsemen didn't get back home, or returned less than whole.
Manitoba Farm boys are tough as nails 😤😤 We got a little statue or Harry and Winnie in Assiniboine park. In ghettos winter, people put winter hats and gloves on Winnie and Harry to keep them warm while they watch over the entrance to the children’s play area.
Even the Piper Cub and the Poo Fighters and the river Poo in Italy and I believe even Minnie Mouse (flip the first M upside down, please) were named after Winnie. Must be.
Colebourn lived through the war. He decided to leave the bear at the zoo. Winnipeg lived to the age of 20, long lived for a bear. Colebourn went into private practice and passed away in 1947.
Major Colbourn survived the war, retuning to Winnipeg to start a private practice. He retired in 1945, and died in 1947 at age 60. Winnie stayed in the zoo in London. She lived to age 20, dying in 1934.
There are two explanations. One is that it came from the name of a swan in the zoo. The other is that the stuffed animal would get so dirty that it smelled.
