Before I knew to infuse my oils and strain them. I used Annatto seeds or turmeric powder to color my soaps. I made these oils for cooking so I used them in my soaps. Thank you for your great video. I’m glad you finally used your funnel.
I had a cook book once containing an authentic mexican recipe of chili with hot peppers and chocolate. Your peppery peppermint sounds just as intriguing. ~A must try~. I have lots of great creations myself, I'll have to share something with you one day.
WOW From a newbie soap maker this video was GOLD!! I am so thankful you posted this!! I am still learning and this is a great way to use natural colorants, I love the muted colors! This helped me tons! Thank you
This is amazing. I have always thought about this method but I guess I am one of those who need to see before trying. I am awful in colouring and this method that you have shown gives me more confidence. Thanks!!
Hej from Sweden! I made some test yesterday making guest size bars using all the infusions I had made. I finally got a beautiful blue with the Alkanett Root that eventually turned purple. I also made a full batch using 15% infusion of my Annatto Seed and got a beautiful orange. I just need to bite the bullet and use 15% of the Alkanet to a full batch to get my much wanted purple for my Lavender. Wish me luck.
Thanks so much for sharing, I'm new to soap making and haven't coloured a batch yet. Just made up these herbal colours yesterday, they look great, looking forward to trying them out!
Great video. Ty. A little tip for anyone who doesn't have a funnel: you can cut the top off a soft drink bottle & use that. The mouth of the bottle usually fits into most jars or bottles. I worked that out because I make an absolute mess when pouring oils into a bottle. Clumsiness leads to invention. LOL MCC:)
I am so happy I found you again. I haven't made soap in about 5 years and couldn't remember your channel name or find the channel even after trying different options. I did find some notes I took when I started the process of soap making and there you are 😍 I need a refresher since I am getting low on homemade soap. I made a ton before, so it lasted several years. I enjoy your videos! 🌱
Hey There: Rice Bran is an awesome oil! One of my favorites that I normally use but was out of it at the time. It's similar in SAP value to Sunflower. The % of colored oil depends on how intense I colored my oil, and the shade I want as a result. The average for me is about .33 ounce colored oil to 1lb of oil in my soap formula.
Wonderful!!! Thank you so much for posting this video. I didn't know you could use household herbs and such for colorants. Goes to show how new I am to soap-making.
Thanks kim. Yes, you can get pink from paprika, it depends on the alkai level and I noticed that the spicier paprikas give more of a pinky coral color. I don't use marjoram for greens, for greens I use sea kelp, chlorophyll, swiss chard & spinach.
I do use cinnamon, not cayenne though. Since I am not trying to seal the jars, it is not necessary to completely submerge them under water. I just fill the water bath to just below the shoulders of the bottles or jars that I am using. I keep the heat low and let them sit for about 2+ hours.
thank you so much for this very informative video! I'm just starting up and I was having the worse luck finding natural colorants and I had all but given up on having colors and then I stumbled upon your video. Thanks!! :)
Kira: I use anywhere from 3-6%, depending on the essential oil. Oils that have good holding power are: lemongrass, litsea, sandalwood, patchouli, cedarwood, rosewood, rose geranium, clove, cinnamon, there are many!
I use high oleic sunflower, so on its own it has a shelf life of at least one and a half years, and to that I add ROE, but remember, I am only using an ounce or two in my soaps for color.
Most of my soaps I make using cold process method, but I do also make transparent soaps. I personally love using herbs for colorants, but I do also use clays and micas at times as well.
Have you ever tried butterfly pea flower for purple or blue? I’m not sure if it can hold up in making soap but I steep it in light oils or butters to make body butters and body oils. It has medicinal properties. Great for hair as well. Thank you for these ideas.
Thanks for your video! I'm very new to soap making, and I was wondering if any of these colorant oils tend to stain your skin at all after the soap has cured. Thanks again!
Thanks for getting back to me. The bars r only two weeks old so is it cool to tongue test it? Yes otherwise the bars look awesome n smell great. U think I maybe taking them out of the molds to soon 15hrs? I'm using Shea butter, coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil
Hey! White ash might be a little too much lye aka sodium in the soap formula. I can't recommend how you would get a blue red, but a rich brick red can be attained with a combination of paprika and turmeric.
Hi There! So sorry I have been so busy and didn't see your questions. Don't worry, if you didn't warm the oil first so long as you process in a hot water bath. If you can't do that, then just let it sit for a few weeks and it will be fine. Don't worry. I sell the dragon's blood resin on my Ebay site.
Fantastic video - thank you! I had to giggle when you used the funnel and then some of the turmeric plopped out anyway... lol... looks like me in the kitchen! :) ... A couple questions for you - for the turmeric, it looks like you used a larger amount (than an ounce or so)... can you please tell how much you used in the batch? ... ... Also, do you have favorite herbs you use for blues greens, brown, and pink? THANK YOU! :)
Hi. Sunflower oil has a short shelf life I hear. I'm curious if the hot bath gives it longer shelf life and if you have to use any preservative or keep it refrigerated or use within a certain amount of time. Thanks.
Hej from Sweden ! Sorry I haven't been back for a bit but I am here now. My Alkanet worked beautifully once I found the correct amount for my recipe. I have a beautiful deep purple for my Lavender soap. It is just beautiful. I have two questions for you; 1.every now and again I get a white ash form on my soaps as they sit to cure. Why is this happening? 2. I have made all my color infusions but would like to get a nice red to have for my Christmas soaps. What would you recommend I use?
What kind of infused oil are you using? (What herb?) If its alkanet root, it will appear red on a paper towel and when you first add it to your soap batch, which I think I mentioned in my video showing alkanet root being used, but after mixing the red will change to a muted purple. I have never heard or seen alkanet turn green.
Really nicely organized . Question: if you wanted to infuse Myrrh or Frankincense , would you try to almost pulverize the resin lumps and, since resin is so much harder, for how long would you infuse? thanks in advance
+EssenceRose3 I do not, because you are using such a small amount to color the soap, just an ounce or so. Now, if you are using a lot, like you are going for major color, then, I would subtract it.
That does occur for various reasons: your formula may be a little lye heavy, your soap wasn't really yet at a trace, the fragrance oil you used may have caused it. Does the soap otherwise seem okay? If you touch it to your tongue, does it "bite" or "tingle"?
So sorry I never saw this. Thank you for getting back to me. I've finally gotten some annatto and some alkanet and I'm excited to infuse them. Thanks again for sharing this amazing video.
Thanks! But as I mentioned, the necks of the bottles I was using was too narrow for the funnel to fit into, and the resins were too large for a narrow funnel.
Great video Thanks! Question: Normally I use an oil that's already in my recipe, Rice Bran Oil. if I use the Sunflower Oil do I need to recalculate my recipe? What % of your naturally colored oils go into your soap? I may have missed that so i will review your video.
Hi, I am very new to soap making; I haven't made a batch yet, I am looking into different aspects of it and am interested in using natural colourants. Would now be a good time to start making colourants or should I wait until I am ready? I read in one comment about the shelf life of oil, how do I find this out? Thank you.
ok so i tried this but i forgot to warm my oils before so i dont think it is working does that matter and where can i find alkanet root and dragons blood im going crazy trying to find it!!!!!! THanks for ALL the info.
Hej from Sweden ! I am using Rice Bran Oil infused with Alkanet Root. Maybe i didn't use the right amount in my batch. Ok my batch is a total weight of 3628g. how much of the infused rice Bran Oil should I be using? Thanks for your help. This is an elusive purple I am looking for!
Thanks for the info. When mixing powdered herbs can't we mix the powder with a small amount of oil then pour this in the bottle then add the rest of the oil?
Hello! I'm new to soap making. By adding these natural colorant, how much does it effect the scent of the soap? I'm trying to find a way to add all natural 'dark brown' to the soap. Please help.
+Lilly Pak , I used beetroot juice instead of water for the lye, because I hoped I would get a nice red color, BUT it turned brown as it reacted with the NaOH. A lovely brown color. Also the powder I put in the traced soap also turned brown. I was very disapointed. I still don't know what to do to get the real color of root :)
No didn't cover it. Should I let it cure in a dark cool place or does it matter? I have it in my hutch at the moment. I'm using Shea butter, palm oil, coconut oil n olive oil. Any tips on a 2 pound loaf?
Hej from Sweden ! Thanks for your answer. Another question, I used my infused oil last night on a lavender soap I am making and it turned my batch green! I never expected that? What did I do wrong. Plus, when some of the infusion dripped on a paper towel it was bright red. Where the heck is the purple? Please help.
Hi there, Love your video, you're very easy to follow and very kind for sharing, although my english is not very good, could you please transcribe the list of ingredients? because I couldn't understand the name of the flower for the golden colour (min 15:00). Thanks :)
Badan Body, can i ask you a Q. after full the bottle with oil (ofcorse contains seed...) then how can we conti witht he hot process? Steam them? how much hot? i mean which temp is best? 50 C?
do these have a lasting scent when made into soap? i'll be attempting this recipe for body butter/lotion recipe;s do you recommend making any changes for those recipes? thank you!

Girl this is fabulous!!!! I wanted to switch over to natural color for a long time and now you have made it so much easier for me.
This is amazing. I have always thought about this method but I guess I am one of those who need to see before trying. I am awful in colouring and this method that you have shown gives me more confidence. Thanks!!

I grew up in Panama. Amazing country to call home! Thanks for sharing your color-making secrets!!!
Thanks Alisha! I hope you enjoy making soap as much as I do!
really enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks
Thanks! I´m going to make all natural soaps so this is wery helpful. Love the earthy looks of the colours. Very nice. :)
Tysvm for this video! I've been wanting to make my own colorants. I just didn't know how to begin.
One of the very best videos on You Tube. Thank you SO much for sharing this information :)
+onecrowesorrow Thank you for showing love and seeing the benefit of the information I shared. Your kind words mean a lot!
That was so helpful for me, thanks so much!

gentian violet great purple lavender
This is so helpful, I needed this video. Thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks alot!!! I've learned from your video. I set my Annato seeds in Swt Almond oil. The color is VIBRANT, but should I just use Sunflower oil?
I love your video and thanks for showing all of us. I have been wanting to try this.
Kira: I use anywhere from 3-6%, depending on the essential oil. Oils that have good holding power are: lemongrass, litsea, sandalwood, patchouli, cedarwood, rosewood, rose geranium, clove, cinnamon, there are many!

Wonderful! It sounds like it worked perfectly! Bite the bullet, I am sure it will turn out beautifully! Be sure to share pictures.
Thank u sista for the information. You had me at paprika for colorant
Thank you Sis for watching, and sending kind positive words.
Most of my soaps I make using cold process method, but I do also make transparent soaps. I personally love using herbs for colorants, but I do also use clays and micas at times as well.

I have, and they did not hold up for long, but I will do a video on it. Thanks!
Thanks for your video! I'm very new to soap making, and I was wondering if any of these colorant oils tend to stain your skin at all after the soap has cured.
Thanks again!
I love these natural colorants. My question is can this beused in coloring candles. I'm inspired
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I appreciate you!
Thank you for watching, and sharing such kind words.
I`m enjoying and learning a lot from your video`s.Your soaps are so colorful and beautiful.Do you color all of your soaps using this process?
Lynne, yes you can add the powder with oil first. It is just a matter of preference.

Very good, was looking for a purple plant based color
Thanks!
: )) Just ‘got’ your name ;);) Love your dedication to the natural...me too. Absolutely no chemicals
Thanks Brigid!!! You are the first to get it I think.
Hi There! So sorry I have been so busy and didn't see your questions. Don't worry, if you didn't warm the oil first so long as you process in a hot water bath. Hi. Sunflower oil has a short shelf life I hear. I'm curious if the hot bath gives it longer shelf life and if you have to use any preservative or keep it refrigerated or use within a certain amount of time. Thanks.
great job, thank you for sharing
Hej from Sweden !
Sorry I haven't been back for a bit but I am here now. My Alkanet worked beautifully once I found the correct amount for my recipe. I have a beautiful deep purple for my Lavender soap. It is just beautiful.
I have two questions for you;
1.every now and again I get a white ash form on my soaps as they sit to cure. Why is this
happening?
2. I have made all my color infusions but would like to get a nice red to have for my Christmas soaps. What would you recommend I use?
Hi There, Paprika should not irritate skin, and beet juice tends to turn a bit gray in color.
Love it!!!!!!! Where did you find those huge glass containers????
Thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Is it normal for the soap to have a white film on the top edge of the bar? I'm a first timer n ur tips are wonderful. Thank u so much
Really nicely organized . Question: if you wanted to infuse Myrrh or Frankincense , would you try to almost pulverize the resin lumps and, since resin is so much harder, for how long would you infuse? thanks in advance
Yes, you could. I do.
your video is excellent! can you put Vitamin E to preserve your oils?
Yes
Out of curiosity, do you subtract this from your oil amounts when making CP soap, since it's a liquid?
+EssenceRose3 I do not, because you are using such a small amount to color the soap, just an ounce or so. Now, if you are using a lot, like you are going for major color, then, I would subtract it.
That does occur for various reasons: your formula may be a little lye heavy, your soap wasn't really yet at a trace, the fragrance oil you used may have caused it. Does the soap otherwise seem okay? If you touch it to your tongue, does it "bite" or "tingle"?
Excellent video!! Thank you! Have you ever infused indigo this way? I have some and I'm not sure how to use it, lol
+Valhalla Soap Company So sorry, I never saw this message. But yes, if you haven't tried it already, you could use the same process with pure indigo.
+Badan Body Thanks for sharing :) For how long do we have to boil it on a water bath?
+Anelia Stefanova I usually boil them for an hour.
So sorry I never saw this. Thank you for getting back to me. I've finally gotten some annatto and some alkanet and I'm excited to infuse them. Thanks again for sharing this amazing video.
Thanks for this great video!!!!!👍....Just a thought....a few cheap dollar tree funnels to pour powders into
Your bottles👍
Thanks! But as I mentioned, the necks of the bottles I was using was too narrow for the funnel to fit into, and the resins were too large for a narrow funnel.
You need a small funnel they'r really good for small holes ;-D
Love the video, thanks 4 sharing
Wonderful video! I didn't catch how much turmeric powder you added to how much oil. :-) Kelly
Great video Thanks! Question: Normally I use an oil that's already in my recipe, Rice Bran Oil. if I use the Sunflower Oil do I need to recalculate my recipe?
What % of your naturally colored oils go into your soap? I may have missed that so i will review your video.
That really depends on how dark/intense of a color you want to achieve. With was the alkanet to oil ratio you used when making your oil?
Excellent video!
Very nice video...

The soap is only two weeks old now can one tongue test it this soon? Also I'm removing after 15hrs, to soon? The rest of the bar looks great though.
Yes, I use powdered dry spinach. I am going to try the marjoram today. Does the color hold up after cure without fading?
Thanks for the info. When mixing powdered herbs can't we mix the powder with a small amount of oil then pour this in the bottle then add the rest of the oil?

Excellent informative video
Does using natural colorant make the soap go bad faster. How do the natural herb affect the soap during gelling phase
+Jay Jay No, it does not make the soap go bad faster. The herbs do not affect the gel phase.
I suggest that you should use a funnel to avoid the mess ! Thank you 🌸
Thank you!
No didn't cover it. Should I let it cure in a dark cool place or does it matter? I have it in my hutch at the moment. I'm using Shea butter, palm oil, coconut oil n olive oil. Any tips on a 2 pound loaf?
My pleasure!
Thank you so much for watching!
How long do u let it set before u unmold? N cover with wax paper as it cures?
Hej from Sweden !
Thanks for your answer. Another question, I used my infused oil last night on a lavender soap I am making and it turned my batch green! I never expected that? What did I do wrong. Plus, when some of the infusion dripped on a paper towel it was bright red. Where the heck is the purple? Please help.
Where do you get alkanet root? I want to try making my own herbal colorants. I would appreciate the help.
Bye for now,
Lori
Thank you for sharing this video.
Great video! Thank you! chris
@luxedeluxepomade Great! so it sounds like you just need to cover you soap. Did you put a sheet of wax paper on top?
Good afternoon love your video, you need to get some funnel, one for the dry and one for the oils
hello Badan body: i'm just getting started would beet juice work to create a purple color as well?
+Jade Major-Bryan You can try it, but it tends to fade fast during the cure process.
ok thank you.
Yes, you can use grapeseed oil.
Love the video
Hi there,
Love your video, you're very easy to follow and very kind for sharing, although my english is not very good, could you please transcribe the list of ingredients? because I couldn't understand the name of the flower for the golden colour (min 15:00). Thanks :)
Lovely !
;)
I would think that the spices would add an additional smell to soap. How do you control that when you want a specific scent and not the spice smell?
+Mel G The scent of the herb is not a problem, because you are using so little oil per batch to color the soap.
Badan Body, can i ask you a Q.
after full the bottle with oil (ofcorse contains seed...) then how can we conti witht he hot process?
Steam them? how much hot? i mean which temp is best? 50 C?
You would put the bottle in the hot water bath and boil, to about 120 Fahrenheit, (50 C) as you mentioned. For about 30 minutes.
+Badan Body Thanks!
+Anelia Stefanova You're very welcome!
do these have a lasting scent when made into soap? i'll be attempting this recipe for body butter/lotion recipe;s do you recommend making any changes for those recipes? thank you!
Hiya Kay, the amount of scent will depend greatly on how strong you make your oil, and how much you use in your formulation. Thanks for watching!
Would the paprika irritate skin? And what about beet juice?
Hi i will like to no if i can use grapeseed oil
what do you mean by hot process the oils?
@luxedeluxepomade I definitely suggest just simply putting a sheet of wax paper on top to keep dust off.
