Great stuff there! I've got some similar footage myself, having spent a week's holiday at Dawlish a couple of years earlier :-) These were the days, probably the swansong of 'classic' diesels before the later 90's when wall to wall units and 66's started taking over. A beautiful part of the country here and one i'd be tempted to make the long trip to again, but whilst the scenery is just as glorious the traction sadly wouldn't be.
I spent thirty years of my live man and boy growing up in Dawlish, I now live in Canada so seeing these brings back many memories. I used to drive a cab for a while there and the rank is just below the end of the platform! Who knows, I may very well have been getting on one of those trains the day you filmed!
Great bygone era footage ❤Allsorts of Diesel traction has used this route ,Lovely video ,Bring back those days 💕💞Now at 50 ,This brings back memories of classic Clag operating before all the plastic stuff operating in todays not so good world now .
back when it was still worth spotting at Dawlish!!!! Not much but voyagers these days!!! Brought back some happy memories of 31's on the summer Saturday Paignton trains.
great to see 47500 in better days before her accident at Manchester and also great to see a classic scene from so many years ago, thanks for sharing this.
This is a very good video, since I am modelling close to this time it has been very helpful. This seems to be a nice place, well done with this and thank you.
Brings back memories of my childhood, used to stay fo hoyrs at those spots in Dawlish, remeber the pub called the Rockstone, used have good view from the beer garden.
That brings back good memories of my early childhood holidays but to also think somewhere along that stretch I heard from an ex girlfriend who's father was an EX Pway man who sadly recalled a tragic shift that saw an old mate of his getting killed along that section
I love the 47's. my fav class of diesels still running on the mainline. It's still the 47's that pull the overnight sleeper trains. Really want to travel on the sleeper, just to experience it :)
Remember well watching many dozens of loco hauled trains every day with 25's 31's 37's 45's 46's 47's 50's HST's being common place, trains like the Cornish Riviera Express with 2 x 50's up front, standing on Langstone Rock and seeing a holiday maker topless sunbathing, epic times. Little did we realize that within a decade loco hauled trains on this line would be decimated by DMU's and shite
Back to when we had proper locos with 4 stroke engines - unlike like the recent imports, and cast iron brake blocks. Disc brakes are fine in dry weather but can lock up on a damp rail very easily even with anti lock braking systems.
I love the video. Reminds me if the journeys my dad took me on - all mk2 and class47 diesels. Where was the sleeper service going and what about the entirely first class train? Was that a BR Pullman service or something?
I paused this at 10:04 on the clip. I have never been to Dawlish. It seems the swell is making the sea about 6 metres higher than 1989 pictures by some amatuer visual maths.
Amazing job here. 1978 forward was my railway era. Im now a pro stills photographer for road transport magazines! Don't panic I do trains as well. Tell me, if you can remember back to 89; what video camera were you using?
Since I last saw this video, several years back now, (can’t believe it, and it’s just come up in my feed again after disappearing) it seems like the quality has changed, the trains running through the shot are stammering, I swear that they never did that before, I know it’s frame rate related and am wondering if it’s been over digitalised or something. Shame really as it’s a fantastic video otherwise.
Them guys walking back to traffic about to go on a limited clearance bridge with train obscuring their view with high vis around the waist???. OMG those were the days lol
No just all the old BR stock still in use replaced, more seats, cheaper tickets, timetables that companies can adhere too, more infrastructure etc etc Basically all the stuff we were promised would happen when the railway got privatised.
Sadly this railway line was destroyed in the storms of 2014. A future rail link is planned via Okehampton. Rail link buses connect Exeter with Dawlish and Teignmouth.

It's like watching my life all over again! This is fantastic mate! =-D
What a gem of railway history, it doesn't all have to be steam to make it nostalgic!
exellent! great to see this! on my fav list!
Spent many holidays in Dawlish in my teens. I`ve now took my kids there and my boy loves the place.

back when it was still worth spotting at Dawlish!!!!

Im from Scotland and would have loved to see so many Class 47's and HST's on a daily basis! great video!

thank you for sharing a wide variety of rolling stock for sure and some great glaggers. the collie wow was awesome and love the trains too
that night clip of meg pulling to get on the platform and then sit leaning out watching that train go away is funny.
This is a very good video, since I am modelling close to this time it has been very helpful. This seems to be a nice place, well done with this and thank you.
1989! I was only eleven then if this video was taken then, although I do remember trains in these livery colours in those days, but elsewhere!
Your dog really enjoyed the trains lol
Very cool vid. Nice catch on the John Wesley!

Great video, thanks for sharing!
It looks like a fantastic location to model in 00, wonder if it has been done?
What a great video. Thx for sharing
14.49 minutes and not a unit in sight and as for those double headed 31s,really was the good days!
People could just walk on the tracks back then?
I love the 47's. my fav class of diesels still running on the mainline. It's still the 47's that pull the overnight sleeper trains. Really want to travel on the sleeper, just to experience it :)
This is smashing!!!! thanks

07:25 didnt they have any linings on the brake pads?? ie the sparks flying lol
I can't get over the people at the beginning walking along the track, lol
A superb private layout called Kingstorre is largely based on Dawlish - not a lot of images about it on the net though
Superb stuff here, exellent posting, now thats my type of dog.
I love the video. Reminds me if the journeys my dad took me on - all mk2 and class47 diesels. Where was the sleeper service going and what about the entirely first class train? Was that a BR Pullman service or something?

Nice video. What is the main motive power there these days?

Superb vid., totally superb! :D Thank you

Try changing the video quality you watch it on.
It defaults to a lower quality
47s notch eightin away!! sadly missed
looks like they might be ultrasonic testing the rail to me
good vidio,,thanks for sharing
Them guys walking back to traffic about to go on a limited clearance bridge with train obscuring their view with high vis around the waist???. OMG those were the days lol
wow the trains don't look any different to the ones running at the moment on these lines! What a success privatising the railways was.
What do you mean?
Exactly what I said.
Longs81 Well, class 47 locomotives have been replaced by voyagers, which look very different. Do you want electric trains or something?
No just all the old BR stock still in use replaced, more seats, cheaper tickets, timetables that companies can adhere too, more infrastructure etc etc
Basically all the stuff we were promised would happen when the railway got privatised.
Longs81 Well, not all BR stock should be replaced, but other than that I agree with you. Things can only get better, as they say.
Interesting train at 8:45.... 47813 on a mostly Mk2d set
BFK-FK-FK-FK-FK-BFK-FK-FK-FK-FK-RMB
All First Class accomodation!
1V45 Manchester to Paignton with what looks like a Longsight Scratch set note the IC Mk3!!!!
Sadly this railway line was destroyed in the storms of 2014. A future rail link is planned via Okehampton. Rail link buses connect Exeter with Dawlish and Teignmouth.
I think there used to be a line via Okehampton in the past but Beeching's Axe closed it. I followed part of its route while hiking across Dartmoor.
They are repairing it!
MrAlwaysBlue
That's interesting to know, any ideas when the line will be open?
4th April
Longs81 check out www.networkrail.co.uk/timetables-and-travel/storm-damage/dawlish/
they were, sadly cross country services with class 47s and mk2s were withdrawn 10 years ago
Looks like a track gang pushing an ultrasonic test trolley, looking for rail defects.
Great video, like the sparks from 47813 at 07:21
47500 at 02.55 - thats the loco that derailed & caught fire at Salford Crescent this week!
Nice video, but unfortunately it has been "repaired" by UA-cam, which makes it go all wonky. Good sounds though.
People, err, walking on the railway???
I...
have no idea what I'm watching.
Erm Henry why wouldn't there be children on this? Stations are not 18+ only locations you know, apart from that, Damn fine vid
either you or that camera were on drugs
50021 and 50028 :)
When it was worth standing on the end of a platform. And when the average joe could afford a day trip to Dawlish!!!!
filmed in 1P , nice video tho!
I............ Yep no idea what I'm watching
AwkwardHolly clue is in the title
No dislikes
and the point of this crap video ???? yes there are trains at dawlish, ALSO other interesting things as well
