One of my SMART goals is to hike a 20 mile section of the AT this summer. Specifically - Max Patch to Hot Springs NC, camping along the way. 🥾❤ What are some of your SMART goals?
If you come up to New England, specifically Vermont or Massachusetts, I would hike 20 miles of the AT with you this summer or fall. Let me know if your interested.
My SMART goal since February has been to hike at least 30-60 minutes up and down the hills and trail in my neighborhood at least 6 days a week, regardless of weather, when I’m not out of town. When we are traveling, my husband and I usually walk a lot. So far, I’ve met my goal every week except two!
I would say one would have a progression of S.M.A.R.T. goals, with the end goal being thru-hiking the AT. When I was planning my thru-hike, I had a very specific 3 month training plan. It included specific strength training exercises for hiking, and a progression of hiking miles. The strength exercises were three days a week. I joined a hiking group that did various increasing lengths of hikes. Closer to my departure for the AT, I started carrying my full pack on those day hikes. Then I did a “shakedown” overnight. Finally, I did a multi day backpacking trip. All the while, I continued doing the strength exercises. I stuck to the plan, and was well prepared when my AT hike started.
How cool, I am writing a course for work about professional development, one of my favorite subjects. SMART goals is part of that. Thank you for sharing your journey as you hike your hike!
Thank you! I've been putting off going on a shakedown hike because I wouldn't feel safe camping in my area, where a woman alone might as well have a target on her back. But I could do a long day hike with my gear, set it up, have a picnic, and go home. That would be a start!
I have all the right gear, many miles in the mountains, but I had a triple bypass two years ago. This has made a big change on my endurance level. I started looking into my training routine and realized my plan is like that of a squirrel trying to get out of the way of a fast moving car. SMART is exactly what I need to do. Thank you so very much! We start today. Love the video and thank you for sharing. Best to you on your amazing journey to health.
Hmmmm. I realized watching this, that may goals are not specific, or timebound. I've been setting M.A.R goals. Lol.I am going to fix this and do better. Thank you for today's lesson.
Oh girl… this video reminded me of years of setting educational goals. So as far as goal setting is concerned… sounds like you are spot on with the formula!
Looking forward to your thoughts in this video, but i would like to add that i don't think that people only need smart goals. In my opinion, there is great importance in setting realistic expectations. Perhaps you cover this in the video. People enjoy seeing progress, so setting easily attainable goals is one way to boost a person's spirits. This is why it is much better to have smaller goals rather than one large goal.
Thank you for sharing this! I actually use this daily - for those that don't know this is actually part of a goal achieving program. I've lost 100lbs - last year my mom got sick and I cared for her until she went to be with the Lord and after I grieved and slipped back into my food addiction ways which led to weight gain but I am back on track now! I use this S.M.A.R.T. method for my journey to a healthier me as well as my daily life wheel - 7 areas I work on - spiritual, health, physical, finance, personal, relationship, work/service to others. I have 3 daily top goals. I have weekly, monthly, yearly goals all using this method of smart thinking so I can realistically reach them! My ultimate goal is to be healthy in mind, body, spirit and soul so I am leading many generations through the woods, over mountains, to new amazing places leaving priceless memories as I go..... I'm proud of you - remember when we struggle it's affirmation we are fighting! Keep on going girl one choice, step, day (sometimes minute) at a time....great things lie ahead! 💗
Noce pep talk…however, I would rather hear what your smart goals are as you are on your blue blaze to health. What goals are you setting for yourself as you are trying to get healthy enough to hike the AT?
When I was teaching I had to set a SMART goal every school year and provide evidence throughout the year that I was working towards that goal, and a follow-up meeting at the end of the year with the school principal. Usually it had to do with bringing up student test scores. (I almost didn't watch this video because seeing the words "SMART goal" triggers anxiety, lol). But you're totally right, it's important to take all those things into account when setting any type of goal. Keep up the good work! ☺️
Oh no! No negative triggers 😳. But I can relate, sometimes just the smallest thing can trigger a negative emotion. I think it's all about charting a course and doing your best to stay on track. Everyone's path is different! Thank you for following my journey. 🥾💙
Know what goes well with goals? Rewards. i enjoy having a special little snack treat or drink that I can reward myself with. It might be a clean-ish pair of socks when i get into camp, or a nice addition to dinner. imagine hiking out a five dollar footlong sub with the anticipation of eating some during a break. Perhaps you have a decadent Land o' lakes hot cocoa with some heavy cream powder to add to it. This is a nice opportunity to add some salt to my beverage, as it will play very well off the chocolate. it's not that i hike so that i can eat, but food is a very effective reward structure for myself. Some people's reward structure might be hostel, hotel, or buffet based. There is a special joy that i find in sharing some moments at some peaks and overlooks,
That trail looked really nice and cruisy. I'm from Toronto, so just about 250ft above sea level, and it's pretty flat here. Sometimes even hiking up to 1500 ft can be a challenge 😂 we flat-landers have it hard! 😉
I'm curious, why do you think this is weird? This lady started out with one giant goal she was definitely passionate about and definitely wanted, and was perhaps not in alignment with her current level of fitness and health. Now she's on a journey of learning about the things she needs to do to really be able to accomplish that big, audacious goal. She's sharing the steps of that journey and her learning along the way with us. And showing us some pretty cool trails while she's at it. Can you help me understand how you perceive that as weird?

@@ewokinthewoods I would love to hike in New England! Unfortunately, I don't think I will make it that far north this summer. But next year! 🥾❤

Nice explanation of how to set SMART goals! I used to teach this technique to my college students.
I find it effective in keeping myself on track.
You could inspire people with your knowledge and common sense
I’ve got a 20 mile hike weighing 12 hours coming up next week 😬. I’m using your stump method

Thank you for sharing your journey as you hike your hike!
That is awesome!
Looking forward to hearing your smart goals but also hear if you have any long term goals. I think we need both--or at least that is what I need
This is very true! The short term goals pave the way to the long-term goals. It's all part of the journey! 🥾💙

Can you find someone to camp with you? Great idea for a long day hike!
That would be an excellent start!

😊 That's healthy thinking right there. We may see a giant winding staircase, but the real-time focus is in each rise and step. Rock on Peaks 🤘
Very true!

Thats awesome…thanks for sharing your personal experience with the Smart goals
How about realistic goals.
If they are smart, they are realistic!
Noce pep talk…however, I would rather hear what your smart goals are as you are on your blue blaze to health. What goals are you setting for yourself as you are trying to get healthy enough to hike the AT?
She won’t answer. No intention of losing weight or hiking long distance. She just wants views for her ego.
