Imo the most stupid thing about laddermen is you can order them to move while your soldiers are climbing, which causes them to fall down and die. Also sometimes your units will climb up just to instantly climb down again for no reason. That's pretty much why I always use either siege towers or just destroy the wall. Laddermen are simply not worth the gold.

Yes. OG Stronghold teaches you to use spearmen against laddermen in the campaign. Unfortunately, only the Rat goes for this counter (on occasion). Sometimes you can do it, to, if you're fighting against the Snake. But, since enemy units never climb the ladder, the only profit is that your archers are not distracted.
The wierdest thing in crusader is how pikemen cant push ladders off. They can do anything else spear can, including dig moats, but ladder? That's the line we cant cross.
In stronghold 2. They get around this. By making ladderman placing it in the walls instead of holding it. Still prefer using siegetower though. Or better, just shoot them with trebuchet from a far.
Not to mention, the ladderman in SH2 is a pretty impressive melee fighter after they've placed their ladder, though I don't have their stats but I recall they can win in a melee fight against archers.

The counter to laddermen existed ever since first versions of Stronghold got released. There was a mission where either Rat or Snake were attacking your castle, and you had to use pikemen to push enemy laddermen off the wall, otherwise you'd very quickly lose the game.

Knew about this already and I didn't grow up with S1. My first Stronghold game was Crusader and I didn't find out about it until the early 2000's. Don't remember how I learned about it other than maybe Unit descriptions. When I first learned about it I said to myself "Okay but when am I ever gonna use this? I never build spearmen and I've never seen the AI use laddermen." It's hard to go wrong with trebuchets and swordsmen. Maybe some crossbowmen to fire at the enemy archers.

Have you played the mission the backhander with ucp mod enhancements. My god it’s so much harder than vanilla. Ai builds ballista and siege weapons so early. I’m trying to complete al missions without Cheese rushes this mission is tough!
I never knew about spearman anti ladder feature until I player stronghold 2 where is was best to use spearman, pikeman or outlaws for this as other troops tend to use the ladder to fight enemy on the ground instead of pushing it so I was like. Wait what if I try the same in Crusader and I was possitively surprised this old game has this feature too. Too bad ladders are not that used you really do not have many reasons to use or train spearman

Guys.. Was i the only one who experienced some mysterious stuff when playing stronghold crusader? When i was a kid, and i used to mess around with random stuff, for example, i asked nizar for help while he was being attacked, he got mad at me, AND CRASHED SC!!!! Also, when i was staying up late (on summer break), lionheart who was my ally, told me to go to bed in real life, becuase even the mightiest lords need sleep. I thought they became sentient and self aware and its still a mystery to this day. I also cant find any videos about these lines.
There are secret lines for all the AI lords. Sometimes they wish you a happy christmas and the Lionheart line in question occurs when you've been playing SCH for a long time. It's like when the scribe tells you "it's very late sire, don't you want to to bed?" or something like that.
I did, I learned this when I saw the AI doing it. Don't remember what mission or match or whatever, but I saw it and went "Huh, that's pretty neat actually" It helps that I like Spearmen and enjoy making maps where you only have them, Archers and Macemen to use.
They should balance ladderman, by making units go up instantly on it too, so you can use them. Also Snake would get stronger with it hehe Also it would justify the Ladderman costing 20 gold on UCP
In stronghold 2 they climb much faster, and they have to actually climb a siege tower as well if I'm remembering it right. Teleporting instantly to the walls is a bit OP and silly. I think ladderman should be used in cases where a large siege tower can't reach because it can't pass through rough terrain, or atleast shouldn't be able to. Though unfortunatly stronghold maps tend to be a bit to flat for that feature.
@@Jefflenious 1: There is a way where you can destroy the economy of the Ai and also they wont attack you. To do this you can use The “Ox of quarry” or woodcutter to block the entrance of the Ai gates. So if you put any of this to block the gatehouse of the ai enemy they will destroy all of there building outside the walls and wont be able to attack. It might not work with the big enemies like wolf or anyother whos uses pits in front of there gatehouse. In that case make sure to put ox or woodcutter before they put pits.
@@Jefflenious 2: Now this one is interesting and technical at the same time You know how to put multiple workers on apple orchards or any other building right. Now you can use the same trick online when playing in “Gameranger”. How to do this: To do this you have to click on apple farm or any other building and wait for the Reconnecting to appear on the screen (i don’t remember the exact words but something similar is shown when connection is slow) make sure to click on the building before it appears. When it appears click on the sleeping building twice so when the game is back to connection. More worker will join the apple orchards. My brother use to do some trick to slow the connection . Because some pings are really good and wont show thatszTo try this technique you have to do something similar ( like if you are connected to wifi hotspot on phone . Change it down from 5g to 3g. that should help in a heavy match)
There is another way to put multiple soldier on tower (that long annoying tower is excluded for this trick) To do this select you all soldiers and keep clicking them to climb on the stairs instead of tower and keep repeating this is not very good but its one of the way. And i learned this one before i found the other one of using a single wall infront of the tower method.

Once I was playing this game with my cousin. He put his main guy in this tower in the corner and thought I didn't know about it, so I secretly queued up a bunch of assassins to cheese him. The dude lived the first attack on 1 hp and I tried to queue up more to finish it, but my cousin threw down some indestructible construction sites in front of my resource gathering points and barracks, rendering them useless and beating me with an exploit. Fun game. Will never play again.
I like how the laddermen die when their ladders get pushed off, and the death animation is just them spreading their hands looking surprised.
They're like: ''O no my ladder fell! Putting it back up again requires far too much brain power so I guess I die now''.

I think Ladder is useful if enemy use more than one round of wall:
your soldiers take control of the gate, open it, let ladders go through.

Yeah, it’s been in the game since the first stronghold. Put your spearmen on the wall in defensive stance and they’ll run around tipping ladders over.
if you had played Stronghold 1 you'd know since it's used in an early campaign mission (helping lord Manakin)
Pikemen have voice lines for pushing ladders off too
The ladder is the source of all their power. Without it they are nothing.

I have always known spearmen can take down ladders. Ever since seeing the game first time back in early 2000s
I use laddermen to walk through the killing pits, therefore saving much more important units
Use them to clear fields of traps... Then they have a genuine use

Arabian swordsman can't even climb ladders. I played a game where I tried utilizing laddermen but even UCP didn't fix them.
I wonder why pikeman can't push off ladders, shouldn't pikes be better for the job than spears?
Maybe because pikemen armour prevent them from effectively pushing the ladder away from the wall or something idk
