  • I made a live edge dining table from a slab of spalted beech for a friend. In a previous video on the 'Offerman flattening jig', I already flattened this huge slab of spalted beech to make a nice and flat dining table.
    The legs of this live edge table are made from fir logs, and are connected to the Live edge top with a white oak frame. I left the frame pretty squared off to contrast the natural shapes of the legs and the live edge spalted beech top.
    It's strong and I'm happy it's done.. it was a lot of work this one!

    Do the butterflies help to prevent the split going further? How is the table holding up?
    And were the legs completely dry?
    Thank you :)
    And really nice work man

    Great job. I'm working on a 3 piece apple table now and was stuck on how I was going to do the bottom frame. I think I'll use a version of yours. Cheers

      That's what I 'struggled' with the most to find a good solution.. This method seems to work fine, very strong! Good luck with yours and thanks for watching!!

    Great work. Especially considering the handicap of working with something so bloody heavy.

      Thanks! Oh man, and heavy it was! I made a couple of tabled before, but never anything like this. Thanks for watching!!

    What finish do you reckamend on spalted beech that really enfasize the dark lines but dont darken the wood to much?

    • @RobinCoomans
      @RobinCoomans  6 років тому

      I used a good quality water based varnish. Because we wanted to keep the light colour of the wood. It did bring out some of the grain and spalting in the wood but not as much as an oil finish would. But the oil based finish would have darkened the wood quite a bit... I am not sure if there is something that combines the best of both worlds. So you'll have to see what your priority is: bring out detail ->oil based; or don't darken the wood ->water based. Hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for watching!

      Yup! I went to a local lumber yard. Look for one that slabs the trees up themselves, I'm lucky to have one at just 5-10 minutes driving. Good luck!
