I couldn't agree more with your wise word's.
I'm a portuguese unemployed sound engineer because i stood up against the loudness war .
My boss ( that's not a sound engineer ) fired me not because of the lack of and quality of my work but because he wanted it to sound louder than all of is competitors.
I really tried to explain to him that if i pushed loudness wayover reasonable values the music would sound dirty and ugly .
I always STAND UP 4 QUALITY and i always will.
Great talks about mastering and creating good sounding music in general. Wouldn't mind seeing more of these on a regular basis!
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Jon means when you read and listen to everything he says. There are differences in knowledge, intelligence, understanding and taste in individuals. The "best" is not a universally accepted standard. It's a pie in the sky that continually changes shape. Finally, what we present as "the best" is our own understanding of what that is in a particular genre, time, place and technological environment. In the 70's the most beautifully recorded music was made.
Brilliant stuff, thank you for taking the time to make these videos and sharing your knowledge.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience and knowledge!
I gave up trying to promote dynamic range about 4 years ago. Now I default to loud and then have a pleasant surprise when someone wants something less loud.
At the end of the day we are providing a service and not being paid to "fight a cause".
Loud, clear, undistorted and punchy isn't bad.
Loud, distorted, pumping and messy is horrible.
I think a very important concept that people who are attempting mixing is "Crest Factor". That relationship between RMS and Peak that utimately defines how much DR you got to work with, when mixes come for mastering. I got the patience, and started educating my cleints about it, with mixed results.
Excellent video, Jonathan. Many thanks.
Thank you, that was very helpful 🙏🏼
Yes Bruno, ultimately I think we answer to our own sense of what good quality is and fight as much as we believe we can for what is 'good'. There IS hope...do some research into loudness normailzation and the calm act and I think you'll see we are heading in a better direction
great thoughts, jon! thnx 4 sharing :)
Very Good! Thank You!
You are not paid to fight for a case but to give the customer the best ..
:D Love your videos. I learn a lot
Certainly. I'm sure you'll agree that the vast majority of the time spent mastering is indeed actually spent making it sound good, mostly with EQ. I'll spend maybe 30 seconds per song setting up the limiter and then around 10 minutes tweaking relative loudnesses across tracks, then another 5 minutes to double check after a tea break.
That's around 20 minutes spent on making an album loud VS the entire day with EQ/filters/gain, MS, HF comp, and automation thereof, metadata, sequencing etc.
I understand...and yet, I believe we are paid at least in part because we 'fight' to make something sound 'good'
I had a boss doing live sound 20 years ago, and he was not happy until all lights in the rack flickered. He called it "making the client happy"
thank you
This video is pretty high-quality.. If you actually check beatgenerals in UA-cam they offer a bit more in depth info about this stuff though...
Yep, because so many people have not the courage to listen and learn.
And I mean music of all types.
Thanks for asking. I prefer to answer questions like that via email. You can contact us through the website m-works dot com. Sorry to be indirect but I REALLY want this to be a forum for sharing information and not seen as an Ad for us...but happy to discuss over email
Isn´t quality something worth FIGHTING for ? ...
Isn´t quality something worth DYING for ? ...
Are "we" sacrifycing quality audio and peoples earing health just because we wan´t to "satisfy" the majority of our costumer´s with LOUDNESS ?
Is it possible to have LOUD , CLEAR, UNDISTOTED and PUNCHY AUDIO when we have alreay pushed loudness wayover reasonable values because our Boss and Client "put food on our tables" ?
Do "we" even realise what we are doing to people´s ear´s ?
Do "we" even realise that we have the RESPONSABILITY of taking care of a lot of ear´s ?
Is this a GAME where the winner is DEAF ?
Will this ARTFORM survive till the last tympanum?
There´s a new generation that´s becoming DEAF because of this LOUDNESS WAR .
And i don´t want to be a VARIABLE ON THAT EQUATION !!!
Above all questions all answer´s and all opinions i GRAB Myself to THE PASSION AND LOVE THAT I AND " OTHER" PEOPLE HAVE FOR MUSIC ...
do you do online mastering?
