    Apple’s first attempt to make a computer with a GUI was the Lisa (named after Steve Jobs’ child). It was “cheaper” than the Xerox Alto, but still unaffordable. And it failed in the market.
    The books I have read way back say that there was a situation where Steve actually shouted “shut up”, twice, at an employee who explained to Bill Gates some technical things. I believe it was about high speed graphics.

    Many things wromg with this version of history. One is: Microsoft didn’t “bale out” Apple. It was a small loan of $150M, enough to keep Apple goomg for about a day. That loan however gave customers confidence to buy Apple products, so it definitely did help. Another thimg was that Multiplan was never a hit on the Apple Ii, that was Visicalc, which Microsoft shamelessly copied to make Multiplan. What Microsoft did do was then develop Multiplan into Excel for the Macintosh. It was the first spreadsheet with a graphical interface. That made the Macintosh a good business tool and both Excel and Mac sold well because of it. Excel was later ported to Windows.

    • @robertholtz
      @robertholtz 3 місяці тому +1

      You’re quite right about most of that, certainly more than the videographer. And Multiplan was a shameless rip off of VisiCalc. But it actually had great success on the Mac and DOS and even a CP/M version that ran on a number of other platforms including the Commodore 64, Thompson, and Tandy. Excel came much later, following not after VisiCalc but after Lotus 1-2-3, which dominated the market long before Excel even existed. Excel and Word were the successors of Multiplan and MultiMate.

      That is absolute BS. Complete and total fabrication. As someone who worked at Microsoft for 20 years, I can tell you that the law suit came about because overlapping windows were added to Windows 2.0. That law suit lingered in the courts until the bailout Microsoft handed Apple to keep them as a competitor to have some argument against being deemed a true monopoly. Part of that agreement required Apple to drop the look-and-feel law suit. I was literally there.

    but the truth is microsoft never saved apple apple is thriving in it's own way little by little
    microsoft only have to lend apple with $100 million loan because to prevent any black clash from the authority and keep the competition going so that microsoft won't be labeled as a monopoly

    Apple, the best copycats & marketing folks in the game. Shadiest in the game. Their best invention was how to keeping taking fan's money :) I also was a fan back in the day, smartest thing they ever did was dump their own OS and smack a skin on Unix, that was my era. They lost me as a customer when they didn't honor my battery issues on a brand new laptop. Then they lost my respect when they became a full-on consumer electronics company and no longer a computer platform artists and servers. Today you can say they were smart about decisions, but mainly the shareholders would be the ones saying it. The USA is kinda the only country without lawsuits against them, the EU keeps threatening to kick them out of Europe for their shady shenanigans.

    There is one tiny thing you omitted, the reason why Microsoft is now 10 times the size of Apple. Microsoft managed to get with IBM. Since it went on IBM it had to be compatible with anything and everything, and as such, throughout the 90's Microsoft became the one to beat, slaughtering Mac and pushing it to the fringes of the computer world. Only people obsessed with Macs bought Macs. Also, Mac's weren't that reliable ether contrary to popular belief, leading to a lot of people to switch to PC's. If it wasn't for Apple literally stealing everything it made after the iMac, Apple would probably not be in business today.

      Among other dubious statements, although MS is bigger than Apple, it's far less than a 10X difference. MS has a $3 trillion market cap and Apple's is $2.7 trillion.
