Indian Foreign Services: Analyzed by IFS officer, Ex-United Nations: Spouse, Kids, Lifestyle, home

- IFS Vs. IAS Vs. IPS
The first episode of the Money Heist Series will explore the lives of an IFS officer, their personal lives and professional lives, as well as the lessons he has learned throughout their career. This will make it easier for all of the IFS aspirants to clear all their doubts in detail.
Hope you’ll gain innumerable insights from the video. Listen to the story of Mr.Prathit Misra, IFS - who picked IFS over the IAS and is now studying at the Georgetown University.
3 years ago, I missed #UPSC final list by 8 marks. My score in optionals was amongst the highest in India, my interview score was second highest.
A few years later, I’m in Istanbul - discussing with one of India’s entry level diplomats, whether it makes sense for him to leave services and do an #MBA.
1. India changed : We aren’t a 20th century #economy anymore. With the advent of liberalization - state control of power shifted from Civil Servants to specialized professionals.
Current JS of Civil Aviation is an MBA from IIM A and was a partner at KPMG. There are 100 others like him who are laterally hired and contributing immensely through their work
2. Working for Society : If Sunder Pichai had cleared IAS- he would be working as a collector in Noida. Impact he has created is insurmountable to one he could possibly create while being in services
It is extremely critical that exceptional people join IAS, but for those who couldn't should know that entry through an exam isn’t the only route in 21st Century India to make a difference.
Many youngsters preparing for IAS in India quit their jobs, take multiple years of sabbatical, and thoroughly screw up their 20s - in anxiety and depression with a hope of getting into civil services (that has a yearly cycle, less than .5% success rate, and an archaic curriculum).
There is no better way to screw up your life than prepare for government exams in India (without any backup plan).
From a career in the United Nations to social impact, to getting laterally hired - you can do a million things to create a large-scale impact.
Do write to me, if you are crumbling under pressure because of a few bad decisions you made in your 20s. . Life is definitely more than an exam that the British created to recruit loyal servants.

It is very rare to find such a detailed and quality video on IFS. 👍
Thanks for your kind words! :)
I have been researching about IFS on and off for past 2-3 years and till day I have not come acrossed such a detailed and beautifully articulated video covering questions from almost the entire spectrum that come to an individual's mind.
If you liked the video - do let me know what you liked about it? And also suggest - what would you want me to cover next. This is a new channel - would appreciate it if you could smash the like button, and share this video with friends and family - so that the UA-cam algorithm promotes quality content.
It's one of the rare take where both people are aware of ins and outs of trade. Your questions are excellent and to the point.
Suggestion:
1. Let the question being answered display somewhere on the screen for its duration.
2. Use mix of Hindi and English wherever possible - reach would increase.
3. Keep doing what you're doing and not copy other platforms.
Very seldom, one feels grateful to YT algorithm and this was one such rare occasion. This was truly enriching session; the way Mr Mishra answered questions, explaining the nuances of the service and lifestyle was commendable and the well framed questions by you, Naman, reflected toil of research on your part. Thank you again, keep it up.
Thank you Kshitji for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed it!
What I liked most about this conversation is the simplicity of it. The realistic questions and responses on issues that seem trivial when the talk is about ambitions and dreams, but have such practical consequences in our lives.
Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words, Kriti. I agree, Prathit was very eloquent with his responses. I wish you all the very best!
@@namanshrivastava Thank you :)
This is very good initiative Naman. And your questions were outstanding you have covered every topic of doubt an UPSC aspirant will have. Continue with the series and bring the people from verious services like statistical, revenue, forest services into your podcasts...
Thank you so much Vasanthkumar for your kind words - that's a great suggestion. I have recorded a few podcasts with some of the officers, already. Will be uploaded soon. :)
Brilliant work! Would look forward to the upcoming videos. I liked the detailed questions that you prepared that are seldom answered, would suggest you to keep doing the good work and continue this series with more IFS officers. You're boosting the morale of many aspirants. Kudos to you! 👏 🙌

@@namanshrivastava First of all thank you bhaiya, I wanted to know that have you planned or made complete money heist series on IFS services and all the related arena viz. financial prospects and the bond with parents in India. I mean you said about that exposure phenomenon so if your busy schedule allows kindly make a detailed playlist with all the information over podcast with various IFS Officers in posting and even retired officials.
Believe me it was really amazing not just because of reply given by Future Ambassador but also of your quality questions. Congratulations!
Thanks for your kind words, Pratapi! Look forward to seeing you engage more with my content. :)
that's probably the best content and superb analysis for ifs. I was literally struggling to find an explanation and details about ifs like this to compare it with ias. I do have a request though . Can you please do the same discussion with an IAS officer who can tell us about the same dilemma of which service to prefer in between IAS and IFS. With same context of question but wrt IAS. And once again GREAT CONTENT👍
Thanks, Sahil for your kind words! Good luck. :)
Such a detailed and informative video! 😮😮A must watch for ifs aspirants.
This is actually what I've been looking for..As an aspirant it gave me a insight into the life of an IFS officer . So glad that I got to watch this video.

Great and healthy discussion 😇 thanks ❤

Hello Naman,
This is so generous and thoughtful. The kind of curation you and Shatakshi bring is really kind. I wish and pray that such sort of initiation of one mind first to get an idea of such services was there. Actually, be it any field. Especially with the kind of education system we have had. It's basically a primer as we study in molecular biology and how it can lead such an amplified and specific effect Such priming helps in wholesome decision making, working toward it and sustaining in real world view.
Thank you

Thanks, Arpit! Glad that you liked it!
As rightly said, blessing in disguise=IFS!! Wonderful podcast with all the areas related IFS covered.
Thanks a lot for this insightful session Naman.
Arise! Awake! & stop not till you become an IFS Officer.
Absolutely, Prashanth
Hello Naman,
I've been following your content across various platforms. I love how you have an extremely honest, crisp and no bs way of putting points across. I graduated in 2021 in Physics Hons. I had started preparing in the college itself, dropped an year to give Civil Services, I missed the pre cutoff by a slim margin, but decided to move on ,for now at least. I didn't see the point in putting my career at such a halt for an undefined period of time, however close I held that dream to my heart . Now ,I am preparing for CAT 2022 ,I have my exam on the 27th of November. Would love to know your opinion on this decision of mine and some advice for excelling ahead.
You're a great writer and conversationalist. You bring the best out in other people. :)
Thanks for your kind words, Cleo. I don't know have high opinions of schools other than IIM A, B, C, and ISB (in India). Try for the best - if, for some reason, it doesn't work out write the GRE/GMAT - become part of the community at GGI, and aim for an Ivy League MBA.
Thank you for such a wonderful video 😃🙏
My pleasure 😊 All the very best, Chaitanya!
@@namanshrivastava Thank you for your wishes.😇
Thankyou so much sir.
This is an excellent podcast.
I'm aspiring to become an IFS officer and I'm really inspired with Nirupama Rao ma'am. But what strike my mind every now & then is life of female IFS officer. What difficulties do they face with marriage, family (in laws) in india, and how do they successfully tackle all the stereotypes set in our society for a married women.
It would be so good if you bring a female IFS officer or her spouse someday on podcast :)
Thanks, Swati! And all the very best with your endeavors. Excellent suggestions. :)
These are not sterotypes
Whenever war happened in russia men were instructed to fight while women were children were evacuated
Even in titanic why women didn't sacrifice instead of man
Why most construction workers are male
EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN SET OF DUTIES ON EARTH WOMEN GET PUBERTY EARLY OR MATURED EARLY BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOTHER OF EARTH RESILIENT AND MORE MENTALLY STRONG
There are many women in india who happily work 9 to 5 with family laws
And many who keep on complaining and when they are 50 get to know why a family was needed
It applies to male as well
Just awesome 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for your kind words, Ayush! Wish you all the very best.
This clears every doubt a UPSC CSE aspirant could have, while pondering upon the challenges and benefits attached with IFS.
I am heartly THANKFUL to Naman bhaiya And Prathit Sir, for sharing their thoughts and insights on UPSC cohort.
Thanks a lot.
Thank you, Chiranjeev! Hope you are enjoying your classes at MisFits so far!
This channel is soon reaching 1 million subscribers .
The question that were asked was something I have being googling on and had never got a proper answer . thank you
Thank you, Vasudev! tbh, number of subscribers are irrelevant. Quality matters! Glad to have you as a part of my YT community. :)
I am also from Prayagraj(Allahabad) and he's really true about this city.
:)
Awesome Initiative. Thank for your service and providing quality content. Would really love to know the unromanticized part of an IFS officer. Like the culture, work pressure, work-life balance, supporting aging parents, salary and savings, retirement in other nations and after years into the IFS does it really feel worth all the hype about the Civil services.
Bcoz I feel the civil service is way and above fancied and made to look like its a different class of species living on earth. Like what's so special about them ? What's the hype all about ?
Of course - Prathit did talk about some of the points in this video though.
@@namanshrivastava Yes I did go through the video, but more in detail would give clarity and help in having realistic ideas.
@@PC-wu8yq Duly noted. Will try to talk more about these aspects.

Hi... Thank you for the great insights.. I would like to know, is there any provision for IFS officers to take care of their parents with them ?
Yes, of course Luis.
One of the best podcast of an ifs officer, pls bring more content around diplomacy. All the best.
Thanks for your kind words, Parag! Look forward to seeing you engage more with my content. :)
Hi naman, thanks for insights. As you said it definitely bridged the gap of information deficit :)
I always had eyes on civil services and this video got me curious on few things -
1. I'm a chartered accountant and also CPA (USA), Is there any scope for CA's in IFS??
2. Is UPSC only route to get into IFS?
1. Yes.
2. Yes (for now).
Content at its peak
Thanks, Vedant! :)
I have a query.
My only concern with IFS despite IR is my interest, is whether my father can stay in touch just like how MEA does it so for IFS kids.
Hi sir. How can we post some questions before hand for the upcoming episode??
In this case, want to know how would sir rate an IFS officer’s work/life compared to a UN officer based abroad (in individual capacity n not from govt)?
You could post it here.
Is there any holiday in the service??
Nice ❤️
Thanks! :)
Thankyou for such an insightful video. Just wanted to know if any ifs officer he/she had faced any kind of discrimination like any other foreigner.
Hi Uppala, I can speak for myself. I have lived in quite a few countries - in my current engagement with Eastern European Countries, as a UN official in 3 continents. I never faced any discrimination.
Thank u youtube
:)
Sir pls get a female IFS officer on your podcast
Thanks 💜 Naman bhaiya 💜
Of course, Mijaj. All the very best!
Hi ! Great conversation.
I'd like to enquire whether your parents can live with you on your foreign postings for the whole tenure?
Hi Siddharth, glad that you liked it. Yes, parents can stay for the entire tenure. The Ministry of external affairs is very accommodating and the ministry itself will help with a few priority logistics.
@@namanshrivastava thanx ! Can you pls clarify one more query if you have the info. When an IAS is posted as the deputy commissioner in one of the 11 revenue districts of Delhi does he have the same combined duties of a Collector+Dm as in say a mofussil district in the hinterland or the duties get curtailed ?
It's a wonderful interview for us every IFS aspirant.. one more thing I would request you to please make a same interview with interesting questions to Dr. Apala Mishra IFS plzz 🙏🙏
Thanks for your kind words! I wish you all the very best. :)
Can't we take our parents with us in IFS?
Did he reject IAS?
Or
Did he prefer IFS?
Nice Dream
Plz answer plz.....
I need some information related to IFS. I have few quetions related to it.
1.Does IFS have to stay out of country permanently after his posting?
2.Can IFS officers come to India sometimes after their posting?and how many times?
3.Can IFS officers give time to other activities like singing ani dancing?Suppose if they want to advance in that career, can they get that much time?
4.After posting, suppose IFS wants to do siging in bollywood, can they do it?
What is salary foren post
Hi Naman.. Wonderful Podcast.. I have a question.. I am 90 born ..so technically I am no more eligible for UPSC. is there any other way one can go for IFS?
Hi Juhi, in India - IFS is the only means to become a career diplomat!
I have made my mind to be IFS if I clear UPSC.
Sir, Can IFS and IFS-B officers marry foreign nationals?
How hard is the procedure?
Is there any permission required for ASO&SO (IFS-B)?
Yes, they can - barring a few countries. The foreign national is required to take up Indian Citizenship
Hi Naman,
This is great! Could you try to bring a female IFS officer?
I don't have female friends in the IFS. I do know quite a few in the other services. Feel free to recommend some names. Happy to do it. :)

Human - I try to respond to every comment on UA-cam :) Here's perfect.
Hi sir can IFS officer visit in other country. in their holidays or is there any restriction..please reply..??
There are restrictions in sensitive countries. But, by and large, there aren't restrictions in majority of countries where India has its diplomatic presence. IFS do have to inform their department - whenever they are taking a private trip. The permission is usually granted.
@@namanshrivastava ok thankyou so much 😊😊😊

I will do my higher study's there only. I will complete upsc exams if required. Let me do some Fever sir.
How many days can ifs officer get leave to visit India?
It's very subjective. They are entitled to all leave policy that an IAS/IPS officer is entitled to (of the same rank)

I am also preparing for IFS and my story is very similar to him , in very unconventional and very different way I am drawn to foreign services . For me also the pull of this service is stronger and like you said if I wanted govt job I would have wished for aspiring IAS but it was foreign services then upsc is the exam ( other way round for me too)
It feels good to listen to someone's life journey who has initiated like I am right now.

He didn't even recognise IFS (B)🥺
Ary i know him.... he is pratahit mishraa
He is from our school only.... prayagraj
You all must be so proud of him! He is amazing, indeed. :)
Hey Naman! Appreciate your views and resonate with most of your ideas. However, please stop bashing one thing to make the other look good. I don't agree with your comment in the caption that if Sundar Pichai cleared IAS, he would be just a collector in Noida. He would still change so many lives, especially of the underrepresented people. And if you think that is of a low stature, you know that if he got in young and had an excellent record, he would have become the Cabinet Secretary of the largest democracy in the world. That is much much much more impactful and complex than being the CEO of Google.
Hope you will take this in a constructive way, as this message is intended.
Thanks for your comment. For a message to be taken constructively - it is important that you write it constructively. Unfortunately - you are cherry-picking data and adding new adjectives to make it sound like I'm bashing the services.
1. I never used the word 'just' as a collector. But you seem to have casually written that in your comment. Becoming a collector is no small feat. However, there are many other ways in which the youth of the country can contribute to the country - be it via armed forces, as professors, doctors, and some even as UA-camrs.
Many youngsters have ruined their lives preparing for this exam - whether you like it or not, the selection rate is abysmal. My goal is to inspire people to not waste their 20s by writing/rewriting government exams in India. They should write civil services but if for some reason it doesn't work out - there are various options that could be explored - I will help them explore those options. And in many cases, these options could provide better opportunities to create large-scale impact.
2. I believe what Sundar Pichai is doing today is far more impactful work than many civil servants. Alphabet's R&D projects in sub-Saharan Africa, collaborations with governments in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to improve grievance redressal mechanisms, etc, - the list is endless. These are my beliefs, and I'd stand by those beliefs - I can't be forced to toe the line of the majority. Becoming a Cabinet secretary can't be equated to creating impact. What you do as cabinet secretary is much more important.
Can an ias take study abroad leave and return back to service
Yes!

IFS (promottee through SSC-CGL). How's his life?
As per my understanding, the life is better in comparison to their counterparts in other services. There are examples of some of the IFS(B) becoming Ambassadors of small nation states.
@@namanshrivastava Better than their SSC-CGL counterparts?
Could IFS (promotee) be chosen above Assistant Commandant CAPF and Allied Services below IRS?
Naman are you preparing for UPSC CSE?

Is there any form of corruption or illegalities in this service? If so how MEA eliminates it? How RAW officials and IFS officers go hand in hand in postings such as Islamabad?
