    The mention of NASSP caught me off guard - I am the project maintainer. I didn't know you were even aware of us. If you have issues setting up Orbiter or NASSP, I'd love to hear what they are. Better documentation is one of our V8 release goals and the feedback would be a great help. Lots of work has gone into making the checklist system more capable and easier to follow. A lot of work has also gone into the Mission Control system as well, so you can be more of an astronaut and less of a flight controller.

      @@kargaroc386 Not really, but we have parts of it. Since it was never flown, there's not really much to simulate there. We did write code to simulate the "programer" (yes, spelled that way) that did the flying though. It might get revisted after the manned Apollo stuff is done if there's enough interest in it, but I think we want to do Skylab and ASTP first.

      Thanks! Working hard on fixing minor and major bugs, as well as the required logic to reach and orbit the Moon. Once I have this, I will start on the Lunar Module and the Moon landing. I have been working on this for the past 4 years, and I will continue to strive to make a great space flight simulator. Many of the systems are already physics based, and it's using realistic orbital mechanics to calculate the trajectories. The Early Access is all about solving the required needs of the engine to be able to technically land on the Moon. Once I have the logical requirements of the engine and the general flow of the missions are working, I will continue to improve the simulator by using physics to model the internal flow.

    You really should do an Apollo Mission to the moon then land the LEM with Mission Control (multiplayer) from Cold and Dark.
    Talk about holy cow, now I know the devs been working on Co-Op cockpit. It does support multiplayer with MC. MC can even send programs into the AGC if you unlock the computer to accept transmission data.
    But something about trouble shooting an error code. Working with MC and just the experience is just amazing. It’s a TON to learn. Can definitely be a bit much for some.
    It’s come far since EA. Seriously it’s not easy. Even just setting up a Lunar ejection and changing orbits. It’s come far. Definitely looking forward to what’s to come.

    Hello Mr Scott, nice to see a video about Reentry.
    Also nice to mention about Orbiter and NASSP. Have you tried SSU ? It's an hardcore mod like NASSP for the Space Shuttle with an interactive 3D cockpit, a functionnal GPC (not all programs are simulated yet).
    Going into orbit with it, dock to the ISS, put the HST, LDEF, etc in orbit, get back to Earth and land made me realize how deep and complex this machine really was.
    The hard part is to find the documentation for it but there are a few tutorials on the forum and UA-cam.

      Excellent feedback. I'm in the works of modeling the characters and having the option to make your own astronaut. These will be inside the cockpit, and you would be able to look around. But with no hands, it is important to be able to move the camera into positions where you can press on the buttons you would normally, in real life, only "feel" after, or press where you know the switch would be. In VR, this could work with the hand controllers.

    Question about the Apollo: Why did NASA choose the complex engineering task of designing the huge Saturn V rocket to launch all lunar vehicles in one single blow? Why didn’t they go for two smaller rockets and then round de vous joining lunar lander and the comand module? We all know that smaller rockets where very well proven by this time? The Mercury rund de vous program was very well tested?

    • @ionparticle
      @ionparticle 6 років тому +2

      Short answer is that they started development on Saturn V before orbital rendezvous was even a thing.
      As mentioned by Scott in the video, the first attempt at rendezvous was with Gemini 4 in 1965, not in the Mercury program. And Gemini 4 failed because they still didn't completely understand the orbital mechanics involved at the time. The first successful docking was in 1966, only 3 years before Apollo 11. In contrast, Saturn V has been under development since 1962, and was a lot more mature than the docking technologies & techniques required for in-orbit assembly/refueling on multiple launches. The everything-in-one-go approach was the only realistic option they had to make the deadline , as it was simpler, cheaper, and more technologically mature at the time.

      The spacecraft in ReEntry were developed with the idea of simplicity and generalization instead of modeling each individual capsule model. This allows for all players to be at the same level in terms of knowledge and familiarity with the spacecraft, and makes it easier on everyone in the community to help one another. Gemini in particular was developed and modeled based off the Capsule 8+ configuration and Gemini Familiarization Manual SEDR 200, volume 2.

    I have a friend who thinks it's impossible that any astronaut to pass through the Van Allen Belts. Although I can't convince him otherwise, it got me thinking... I saw somewhere (probably Vintage Space) that the danger in the belts isn't so much electro-magetic radiation, but ions. I have questions about how the belts trap those particles, and on the electromagnetic scale, what are the belts made of? X-rays? Gamma rays? What is really going on out there?
    Also, astronauts talked about seeing weird stuff in space. Did that coincide with them passing through the belts?

    • @amperzand9162
      @amperzand9162 6 років тому +17

      Gamma and X-Rays are not affected by magnetic fields, they just carry on, because they're photons. The magnetic field can only capture charged particles and ionized atoms, which have an electric charge, and are therefore able to be affected by the magnetic field. Charged particle radiation is significantly more destructive than photon radiation, but also much easier to shield against.

      the van allen belts are heaven, the radiation is the souls of the dead

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  6 років тому +26

      Ask them why they think this? Because Van Allen’s original study doesn’t conclude the belts radiation levels are instantly fatal. Sure if you spent 3 months orbiting in the heart of the belt then you’re in trouble, but a few hours is fine.
      My point is your friend has picked up this idea from someone who doesn’t have a clue and has never actually done the math.

    • @DCSdigitalerr0r
      @DCSdigitalerr0r 6 років тому +3

      Not directly. I have not used the real source for the AGC, or the Math Flow 3 source for the OBC. I have based the logic on these though, and the AGC programs are using a lot of the same memory locations, logic, programs, verbs and nouns. The goal is that you should be able to use the real manual for the AGC to operate it. The OBC manual has also been used to make the implementation I have of it. But no, I haven't written an emulator that compiles and run the real source code. The goal of this simulator is not to have everything exactly the same as it was in real life internally, but to have almost the same sequence and flow as the real astronauts had to perform.
