  • Hollywood on Parade was a series of short subjects produced by Paramount Pictures between 1932 and 1934. They showcased the studio's stars both in newsreel-type footage (glimpses of Hollywood figures at premieres, parties, the races, etc.) and in new material such as sketches or musical numbers. The print quality of these isn't the greatest, but nevertheless there's some interesting stuff here. Also note that there's a numbering system associated with these shorts, but because some of the information I've found is conflicting and confusing, I just made up my own numbers to differentiate between them.
In this installment, we witness a bunch of Hollywood celebrities hanging out in a bar. Paramount's songwriting team of Mack Gordon and Harry Revel are gathered around a piano with Jimmy Durante, but Durante's gotta scram, and he meets impersonator Florence Desmond at a nearby table. Ted Healy and the Three Stooges put in an appearance next, and Ben Turpin's the bartender. Rudy Vallee then meets Gordon and Revel at the piano, and he sings snatches of the duo's hits while they reminisce. Other celebrities that turn up at this point include Chic Sale and Polly Moran. The show closes with Mack Gordon performing "Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?," with Revel playing piano.

I remember first seeing this old short on "Matinee at the
Bijou" on public television back in 1983.

I have always enjoyed this film. Great people like Jimmy Durante and his wife Jeanne Olsen, Ted Healy and the Three Stooges with Bonnie Bonnel, Polly Moran, Chic Sale, Rudy Vallee and Ben Turpin. You can tell Rudy Vallee was intoxicated. It just looked like it would have been fun to be there.

Any idea at 6:15 what Mack Gordon's song is before he sings "Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?"
