Nowhere Man and A Whiskey Girl is the beautifully tragic love story of Derrick & Amy - and the best band you've never heard of.
Chris Charles Scott's beautiful documentary is now available to stream at Popflick. Derick Ross and Amy Lopez came up with their band name, "Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl," by combining the titles of songs by The Beatles and Gillian Welch. The first time you listen to Amy, her voice hits you like a ton of bricks. Burning questions come at you fast: Who is this lost sister of Billie Holiday, Joanna Newsom, and Amy Winehouse? How come I have not heard of her before? The answer arrives in this striking documentary, rich in musical performances that give you the joy of discovery and a sense of loss. The indie film doc is a departure for director Chris Charles Scott III, who goes for musical biography after the tragicomedy of "Class Action Park" (available at HBO Max). We talked with Chris about his career, independent filmmaking, and the legend of Amy and her partner in music and life, Derick Ross.

And now their daughter who was put up for adoption is on 2024 American Idol. ❤️
Not sure its his daughter?
@@donnaobrien3811 she was born after they were together so it an understandable assumption.
@@JenSheaI wondered the same. She looks like him.
I think so too @@Se-leve
Geees I hope here Movie is next💕🎶
I grew up with Amy, she was such a wonderful and beautiful person and is greatly missed ❤ I will watch this
have you watched american idol auditions? her daughter who was adopted auditioned and she is amazing..
I'm having a hard time finding the docu to watch. Can you help me out with this?
@@sabrinarich816 google nowhere man and a whiskey girl documentary and it'll give you the website to where you can purchase the documentary to watch.
This seems like fate ❤
Does the document talk about her pregnancy??
American idol brought me here. I was balling listening to her story and seeing the whole family there. What a trip it must of been seeing the spirit of their sister, daughter and friend playing through her daughter. What a heartfelt, fantastic, sad and tragic story. I hope she gets all the accolades and can display her mother and late father’s legacy. They live through her. ❤
Yes, that American Idol was how I learned of them and came here. I can't tell if she was pregnant when she died and they delivered the baby as she was dying?
@@ln9119 She was 25 when she gave birth to her daughter McKenna according to the internet. Amy died at the age of 40. McKenna is now 25.
I heard of this incredible performer and late husband thru a video of their daughter performing on American Idol Had Amy been here a few years later she could have survived. Possibly. I’m a rheumatologist we now have Benlysta and Voclosporin(Lupkynis) approved for lupus nephritis. We use Rituxan off label and mycophenolate
She didn’t have those available to her
I hope her strength and perseverance is an inspiration to any one with lupus to get help and see a knowledgeable rheumatologist for care. I’m in awe of how she went to dialysis and the performed and went back to dialysis. Hard life. Tough lady ! Prayers to McKenna and her parents families. Only happiness ahead.
Thank you for this info...I'm taking note of this.
Amy must have been very strong
It's so great that Mckenna has all these videos here, as well as her birth family and the many other people who knew her to learn more about her mother
Saw her daughter on a talent show, that had been adopted away. Who found out as an adult, who she also had such a beautiful voice from.. Such a moving story of short brave life journey 🤗💖✨
Watched American idol which I generally don't watch. The whiskey girl story is awesome. It's an untold music story that fell thru the cracks.
Wow ❤ just wow! This is such an amazing story!!! Such an amazing voice and talent, now look at her beautiful daughter ❤
I was going through a rough time 6 years or so ago. And one of the things I found solace in was Doug Stanhope and also things connected to his world, such as Nowhere Man and A Whisky Girl. I think I first discovered their story, and then the music. I had heard bluegrass and folk before, but never heard such a stripped down, pure, Southwest soul music like theirs. Amy was so damn talented and amazing at piano, singing, songwriting, etc. Her harmonies on their albums are just incredible.
And like was said in this clip, it makes zero sense how they didn't blow up. It truly goes to show that not all great artists get their due. The spotlight can only cover so much ground I guess...and often it shines on those who are completely undeserving.
But yeah..For me, their music was a big piece of all the other things Southwest (Arizona, Bisbee, Stanhope, Grand Canyon, etc) that drove me to actually visit there and truly get a feel for the wild west.
I only discovered them via The Doug Stanhope podcast. It's one of the nest discoveries Doug and Bingo have given me.
Hope this gets put on YT- would like to see this.
The saddest most romantic stories I have ever heard..... And the songs are just as beautiful and painful as their love
I have lupus, and I don't think much about dying, but then I see things like this and I get terrified.
So excited to watch her success on american idol.❤
I have the same Lupus Amy had... it broke my heart to see her with the moon face. I've had it too twice when I was on steroids. Such a beautiful woman. Such a sad story 😢 rest in Heaven Amy and Derrick 💗💗💗
❤
Same. I never think about dying till I see things like this.
Your daughter has your gift! Hoping she wins American Idol! What an amazing story and journey she is on. ❤
She Won more than that…she’s on a journey 💕🎶God Bless her
✨💫💐Such a beautiful and talented couple 💙♾️💝Hist saw their daughter audition on American Idol 💝She too was so amazing! 💫✨💝Her parents here on earth and in Heaven are gleaming so proud 💐✨💫Beautiful families 💐✨💫This is going to be an amazing season on AI💐✨💫
Very sad story. They leave behind some awesome songs.
Their story is a compelling one of joy, sadness, heartache and joy again as Amy's daughter Mckenna that she gave up for adoption, takes the reins and writes the rest of the story ...
I can't wait to watch the documentary!

Her voice is so beautiful and yet haunting and their story is while beautiful is utterly crushing 💔🌹❤❤❤
Alas their sound lives on in McKenna ❤❤❤❤
Always thought their story needed to be told. Thank you :)
Can't wait to watch this.
It's wild to me how things like this have a way in setting the stage for something bigger...their daughter & her journey. What are the chances?!
american idol brought me here
Same
Me too.

It’s probably debatable whether two people have ever loved each other more. If life was fair, Amy and Derrick would have had the chance to grow old together. May they rest in peace.
I love that her birth daughter is shining a light on them ! How do I see this whole documentary? I’ll Google but thought I’d ask. They are amazing
American idol brought me here, I just need to know this story. The whole thing, something feels like it’s missing

How do we see this documentary of this couple we all here just seen Amy’s daughter on American Idol
I clicked to watch the doc but it wouldn’t play
Hi, you can find the documentary here www.popflick.com/watch/documentaries/nowhere-man-and-a-whiskey-girl
They never mentioned if "Nowhere Man" was the father of the girl who auditioned on American Idol tho...🤔
I don't think her was her father. She had the baby before they were a couple.
Yes, he is the father. They kept the pregnancy a secret from most people and decided to put her up for adoption due to their traveling ways, but mostly because of her illness of lupus. She passed away in October 2013 from complications relating to lupus. After Derrick received the news at the hospital that she had passed, he went home and sadly committed suicide. It’s really, truly, a sad sad story.
The producers of the film no longer offer it on Popflick.com but you can find it here: shoplifterstudios.vhx.tv/
@@kayceerapp2016 So Derrick was the father? Has that been confirmed?
Mckenna certainly looks like a mix of both of them
People, pray for her daughter that this disease doesnt follow her. Pray pray pray
I cannot find the movie anywhere.
The producers also have their own site here: shoplifterstudios.vhx.tv/
You can also watch it on Popflick now: www.popflick.com/watch
Where can you watch the movie?
Hi, you can find the documentary here www.popflick.com/watch/documentaries/nowhere-man-and-a-whiskey-girl
I wonder why she didn’t let her family raise her daughter instead of putting her up for adoption. So sad
Me to, she was already 26 😔 I want to understand….
I don’t get it either
Everyone is different. She seemed close to her family. Imagine it would have been difficult to watch your baby be raised by an aunt, uncle , sister, brother, cousin....mother... so close to you but unable to claim that babygirl as yours. They did what they felt was best for McKenna. ❤ bless all of them ❤ r.i.p. to both xo
she might have wanted her daughter to have the best life and upbringing possible...and perhaps felt that a couple who wanted to adopt/wanted children but could not have them was the best option.
I agree I never understood why my own mother who raised me would tell me stories of almost being adopted-she too thought I’d have a better upbringing. And I could even feel her guilt at times for not letting me go. I had a dr who was willing to adopt me. As a baby, the dr who performed my mom’s c-section. I wasn’t not adopted due to my moms change of heart or more so her husband my father. He told her not to. He was an alcoholic and mom knew what that life would entail. I was blessed with such a grateful mother. RIP to her. And to Amy. And Derek. Lovely story.
What happened to the father?
If he is the father he committed suicide after her death
@@Se-leveomg. That is so tragic. If he was McKenna’s dad he had SO much to live for.
As per the documentary McKenna’s father was not Derrick.
@@CasaChristy I saw that she was married before Derrick.
With all due respect, comparing her to Billie Holiday and Amy Whinehouse is a huge stretch.
They didn't "blow up" because Folk music never Blows up. Just saying. It's Niche' music.
They were Good. But it stays in a Niche' usually.
Folk music was blown up. U kidding. Look it up who is still alive and famous
Wonder why she had to give up her daughter for adoption?
i read that she was already ill with Lupus.
I can already imagine Mckenna singing her mother's song in the American Idol final.
