I actually like Yu-Gi-Oh's names more than Magic. And he has to remember, this is a Japanese card game. Seemingly random english words are kool to them

One thing I like about Yu-Gi-Oh! is how its setting/genre is “everything goes”. Dragons? Yes. Demons? Yes. Giant robots? Yes. Ships made out of sushi? Yes. Cartoon versions of other cards? Yes.

Toon Cyber Dragon is a mix of three totally unrelated things at once.
Its more cartoony and it doesnt have any lore to begin with. So yeah, anything goes.

Avatar of the Pot gets a pass either way, Pot of Greed is Yugioh's Black Lotus. They just keep printing new cards trying to make a "fair" version that isn't useless or broken. The names are obviously going to get really dumb when it's mandatory to include "pot" or "greed" or "lotus" for the reference. Jeweled Lotus isn't much better. What does it even mean?
Played Yugioh for it's first 13 years. In adulthood, it's pretty ridiculous. But I loved the ever loving hell out of this game. Memories for days.
I played it a lot from ages like 9-13ish. It's SUCH a bad game from a design perspective and how the company handles it but as a kid you don't know any better haha.

This was one of the goofiest stream in a while. Especially this and "I will explain why I won't be playing YuGiOh again simply" followed by a 1 hour rant about StarCraft and it's game mechanics and practices

One that i considered extremely funny even as a child was: "KEY MAN THE KEY WARRIOR"

I'm glad a few of the awesome sounding ones did make it in there. One of the best things about Yugioh is how you can do an anime voice and shout things like Geomathmech Final Sigma

🤣 It's even funnier when the ridiculousness of the names flew right over my head as a kid. Especially cards from the first set
I feel like it's worth remembering that a lot of the early cards were translated from Japanese by "4Kids Entertainment" as part of the anime dub, and then LATER used in the card game. 4Kids was, and is, legendary for ridiculous nonsense-comedy that takes normal things and does them in completely insane ways, like instead of pointing a gun at someone they would point some kind of convoluted spring-loaded cartoon mallet at them.
"Nekogal" is probably the biggest clue to this. It is technically a direct description (it literally means "catgirl"), but they wrote it in this needlessly weird way makes you go "whuuuuh?" I don't know if 4Kids is still involved in Yu-Gi-Oh today, or even still exists, but clearly their influence remains.
Im pretty sure Nekogal didnt show up in the anime. Might have been Upper Deck with similar reasoning. Its also a card game marketed to kids-- silly card names arent a bad thing at all. Even today we're getting cards like Suships and Libromancers and The Great Double Casted Caster.

Dude, Sean needs to go the Duel Logs route and react to cards from YGO and try to predict power levels. TheDuelLogs does YGO content and has done 2 streams analysing MTG cards, it's highly entertaing and interesting.
I know next to nothing about Yugio, but I went and watched that, and it was interesting. I second your suggestion.

"Darklord Marie" used to be known as "Marie, the Fallen One".

They translated this as 'The Fallen One' to avoid controversy with Christians and religious groups. Later, 'Datenshi' became an archetype, and to save on card text, keep the size of the word the same, and stay consistent with the first few cards in that archetype, they started translating it as 'Darklord' -- but hey! In Japan, if you play a card that searches 'Datenshi' monsters, youre legally allowed to search 'Datenshi Marie.' But you cant do that in the West if the cards name here is 'The Fallen One' and the card that searches it is telling you to search a 'Darklord' card! So they had to retroactively rename and reprint the card.
This is the same reason 'Frog the Jam' has card text telling you it specifically doesnt interact with the Frog archetype, for example.

I love how one time they use _#2_ and then they use _II_ because f*kk consistency.
you think that's bad you should see the effect consistency, not only that but they literally ban cards then bring them back with a different effect, which works in game like hearthstone, not so much in physical card games.
It's not an issue of consistency, those mean different things. #2 is Number 2, II is The Second, they aren't interchangeable.
Funny thing is that names play a major role in Yu-Gi-Oh strategies, something we call archetypes, and sometimes things go insanely crazy when a card is made to be part of multiple archetypes like the "Onomat" family.

Yugioh card names are a giant meme that the card designers and the players are all in on.
Let's not forget Dark Ruler Ha Des. They literally just took Hades and made it two names.
It's Japanese name is "Ha-Death" and part of the "Death" series along with monsters like "Des Koala" and "Des Lacooda". The "Death" part got changed into "Des" because they think it's too scary for kids.

Tbf YGO was always pretty unique with their design, and you can instantly recognize many cards/designs as YGO. While MTG looks really generic most of the times.

Honestly, a quiz with "Guess how powerful theses cards are based on their name" would be epic. Also, I downloaded MQ and had some fun with it, but when im starting to get tutorials on decks that take 15 moves to do in one turn and then summon a 2800/2100 monster on the initial turn, it made me wanna flip tables. I really do miss the old-school back then yu-gi-oh decks and gameplay, fuck did we ever have fun spending our days playing yugioh cards and beyblades
