Lessons learned: 1. Market your game at least A LITTLE BIT 2. Don't make a generic live service 3. Make good character designs 4. Don't spend 8 years on a game that's supposed to chase a current trend
They did market, they had a whole well made full sized trailer at games expos this summer. There is 2 lessons to learn here, your number 3, and "Hero shooters don't excel because they're like an FPS, they excel because they are a breakaway genre FROM FPS". The only thing a hero shooter should have in relation to an FPS is the skill shots and the competitive nature. FPS has been overdone now for 20 fkn years, but at the very most fundamental level, people like them, and that fundamental mechanism is those 2 things I just named. People have been dying for something that has those 2 things and are different, and we've had FPS for so long without almost any significant change for SO long now, that people were and are ready for something wildly different.
They would be going nowhere trying to market something that is unmarketable, no one would going through any ad with this lame concord shit let along spreading it.
I was in a volunteer test and alpha program for an mmog about 20 years back. The TEST server had more players and employees on it than Concord had customers.
There were meme pron games on Steam getting more players than Concord. That HAS to hit Sony hard to see these numbers, maybe they will see this flop and hopefully focus more on Single-Player games. They probably could have made a classic PS2 God of War remasters or Rachet and Clank Remasters for their new systems/PC and maybe some other stuff and made WAY more than they did with Concord. I can see both of those doing well on PC or PS4/5. There is no way to play classic GOW on PC next to using PSX2, which does work and does not need any piracy to do, which is nice. Just a disk drive, GOW 3 is harder to run, though on PC..

This is legitimately such a good sign. The moment big businesses realized that the gaming industry was a real thing, they immediately set about creating the most efficient way to shit out carbon copies of games with barely paid devs limited to certain timeframes with creative liberty at an all time low. This might finally at least make some game companies think twice about not releasing the same crap year after year!(I can dream...)
That’s true, but it also may have the same effect as the film industry is seeing, where they decide to stop funding new projects and just put all resources into ones that exist or sEqUels with no substance or difference from the original (Overwatch), which wouldn’t be great imo

If you were a developer, you knew it was bad, and you continued to take a paycheck. You do not get sympathy for giving a company your time when you clearly did not analyze what was being made, and kept working. They put the resume in, they applied, they got hired, they kept working for years, they knew what they were working on, they took a risk and failed over every level. No sympathy.
I run a private game server for a 21 year old korean MMO. Our community is extremely fragmented over hundreds of private game servers with various settings/content. I run this game server out of my bedroom. We have more active players than concord ever had. and at our peak population we had over 5x what concord had. I cannot fathom how a development team that had 8 years and a budget of 200m dollars could release something this bad.

The funniest thing about the failure of Concord is that there's an upcoming video game anthology series called Secret Level that's supposed to feature Concord as a segment. But since this game is shutting down after only two weeks on the market and the series is set to release in December, that means that if they kept the segment, they would be including a segment about a video game that has been unplayable for three months as of the time this series comes out.

8 years is an entire era in someone’s life. Just imagine there was a mapmaker who brainstormed, worked on proposing his idea, navigated the ridiculous personalities of his bosses, got his stuff approved, and put his sweat and long hours into making his vision a reality, all while he got married and had a kid, brought his kid to the first day of school, took pictures and sent to his whole family, who every time they thought about how their son/brother/friend is doing, knew they were hard at work on a video game, and wanted to buy that game to support their family, all just to have it shut down in a matter of 2 weeks and be banished into the shadow realm as if none of it ever happened at all. When these devs go to apply for new jobs, this isn’t something they can be proud of, it’s something they have to rehearse how to explain to prospective employers in their interview, and show pictures of instead of being able to stand on the success of the game. This is just unprecedented. Crazy to even think about.
And those aspiring devs who probably wanted more for concord than a live service will be fired, the studio shut down, and a permanent stain on their reputation. These people who worked for 8 fucking years had their entire work washed down the drain.
This, this is exactly what makes me fucking furious about the current state of the videogame industry. Talented and passionate people spend years of their life, giving everything they've got to live up to the ridiculous or impossible expectations that their management set up, because "mE wUnt LiVeSerViCe, BiG mOneY nOw!". And then, when the game inevitably fails, the company is shut down, dozens of developers are fired without severance pay, and management blames EVERYONE but themselves. It's literally 1% of the people working in the videogame industry, causing 90% of all the failures, because these pieces of dent-headed reproductive organ failures cannot fathom the concept that they are the problem.
This might be the kick in the pants they need to leave the corporate hell that mangles any good idea beyond recognition. Many indie devs started out working for Blizzard, etc, until they couldn't handle it anymore. It's become even worse in the last few years, as the HR cult has taken over, where everything now has to be filtered though and turned beige by 'sensitivity readers' and such.
The real question is where the f did the money go? 250 million just pissed in the wind? This game started production in 2016 let that sink in. 8 freaking years for a crappy live service that couldnt even last for a week and a half.
Damn 8 years? I haven't even heard of this game until recently (glad i didn't). Also 250 million dollars for this? Jesus imagine investing all of that money for a game that only lasted about a week in a half. Theres gonna be alot of layoffs in the future thats for sure

I know the exact reason why Sony considered even making this game, this game was in development for 8 years, which means the idea for this hero shooter was pitched in 2016. You know what released in early 2016? Overwatch. Concord was literally made because overwatch was popular, and it took them 8 years to release slop. Sony saw the success Overwatch had so that's why they approved Concord, they thought it would be easy money to copy Overwatch, which it was...5 years ago.
I mean aside from OW, are there any other OW-like hero shooter that succeeded? I guess Paladins is still kicking somehow. Valorant, R6, and Apex are hero shooters technically, but they're so mechanically different from OW.

It's clear that Concord struggled from the start. Many players felt the game failed to meet expectations, which is reflected in its short lifespan. Despite being backed by Sony and Firewalk Studios, the game received negative feedback shortly after launch, with players criticizing its lack of depth and engaging content. The servers were shut down just two weeks after release, making it one of the shortest-lived AAA games in recent memory( gamesradar )( PlayStation LifeStyle ). The combination of a poor launch, lackluster gameplay, and a limited player base contributed to its quick downfall, despite attempts to salvage it. It’s understandable why many players weren't invested in the game.
I work in game development. The head of my studio was recently asked what can we learn from Concord to avoid a disaster like that. Their response was, "yeah that's simple, market your game!" I literally never heard of this game until everyone started talking about how it died immediately.
@@walmart-vz3lz if the game is actually good most people would overlook that (and the studio removes it for china), but instead we have characters that look like i colored them when i was 7.
Yeah, the game barely had marketing, wich is impressive considering that they have 1 episode in the new TV series "secret level" that has stories of other actual famous games (still wonder if they will release it), or the new limited edition PS5 controller (wich is also kinda cool tbh). So they actually did waste a lot of money in strange marketing tactics, but it seems that they forgot about basic marketing..
E.T. Atari, the legendarily bad game that is rumored to have helped cause the video game crash back in the 80’s, a game so bad they went out and buried the excess copies under concrete just to get rid of them, sold 2.6 million copies. Concord sold 25,000.
And in the 80s where games were harder to get and less popular concord is a mythical failure And the lesson sony will learn is 100% going to be "we shouldnt make new ips we tried and it failed"
That was more because they had made over 5 million cartridges, not really because the game sold poorly initially. Word of mouth got around that it was horrible so people stopped buying it, and many who did returned it.
I think it says something when literally everybody knew that this would fail the second they learned what it is, except the people who’s job it is to know it
It really is remarkable, isn't it? As soon as I saw these character designs, it was obvious that this game was going to flop. How are the people in charge so out of touch?
Just reminding everyone again that Sony was so confident in Concord's success, they secured an episode on the Amazon Prime show "Secret Level" coming out in December. The game will have been dead for 3 months by that time.
This is 100% the biggest 1st party AAA game failure of all time... Calling it a flop is a huge understatement. 8 years of development, buying the entire studio for this game, $200 million wasted, only lasted 2 weeks... and bombed so hard it was UN-launched. This was a disaster worse than any release from Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. Wow.

GPT premise for this game: GLORBUS's Hemorrhoid Adventure In the distant galaxy of Zorblon, there exists a quirky, misfit alien named Glorbus, a humble yet hopelessly clumsy space janitor working aboard the star cruiser *GalactaSweeper*. One day, during a routine maintenance check in the ship’s sanitation chamber, a bizarre cosmic accident causes Glorbus to develop a mysterious and rather inconvenient ailment: a sentient hemorrhoid that he names “Roid.” To his surprise, Roid begins speaking to Glorbus, revealing itself to be an ancient cosmic entity with vast knowledge of the universe and a penchant for wisecracks. It turns out that Roid is actually a powerful artifact from a forgotten civilization, and its presence in Glorbus's life is no accident. Roid's unique position gives it the ability to unlock hidden knowledge and latent powers - but only when properly… stimulated. Now, with Roid providing dubious guidance, Glorbus must embark on a chaotic adventure across the galaxy to find a cure for his peculiar condition. To succeed, he’ll need to explore strange alien worlds, navigate perilous space stations, and uncover the secrets of the long-lost civilization that created Roid. Along the way, Glorbus will face challenges like intergalactic bureaucracy, rogue alien bounty hunters, and bewildering cosmic phenomena, all while dealing with the unpredictable (and often embarrassing) effects of his new condition. He’ll gain allies in the form of quirky space misfits, evade enemies who want the power of Roid for themselves, and learn the truth about an ancient prophecy that foretold his adventure. **Key Gameplay Elements:** - **Exploration and Puzzle-Solving:** Players will navigate various quirky alien worlds and spaceships, using Glorbus’s wits and Roid’s peculiar abilities to solve puzzles, access hidden areas, and overcome challenges. - **Humorous Mechanics:** Utilize Roid's "powers" in a variety of imaginative ways. These could range from emitting bursts of energy when Glorbus sits down to more absurd abilities like controlling enemies or activating ancient technology. Timing and strategy are key, as overstimulation can lead to unpredictable and often comedic results. - **RPG Elements and Customization:** As Glorbus gains experience, players can customize his abilities and Roid’s powers, unlocking different skill trees that offer new gameplay styles and special moves. - **Character Interaction and Dialogue:** Engage in humorous, dialogue-driven encounters with a cast of bizarre alien characters, from nefarious space pirates to eccentric scientists, with choices that affect the storyline. - **Combat and Minigames:** Engage in comedic, fast-paced combat sequences against intergalactic foes, as well as absurd minigames such as "Intergalactic Bureaucracy Simulator," "Alien Karaoke Challenge," and "Space Dodgeball Showdown." **Visual Style and Tone:** The game would have a light-hearted, colorful, and cartoonish art style, blending sci-fi and humor in a unique way. Think of it as a cross between a Saturday morning cartoon and a zany, space-themed comedy show. The tone is irreverent and playful, with plenty of puns, quirky dialogue, and unexpected twists.

Concord was in development for 8 years, Sony spent countless millions of dollars developing this trash and have killed it not even 2 weeks after release. Yet we still can't get Days Gone 2.
Someone out here saying what really needs to be said. DG2 would be such a hit... as long as they done it with the same mindset they had with the first one.
I would say, this is what happens when Sony isn’t involved with its development. At least that’s what I’d like to assume. If they’re investing so much, they should’ve had input to what kind of game it would end up becoming. It could’ve worked maybe 8 or 6 years ago. But expecting players to be interested in something that took so long to produce, risking a lot there. That’s like NMS releasing as it did, but as open as it was as a concept, they were able to change and update the game and world as they saw fit. But Concord kept the same mindset for 8 years without looking at the gaming world and seeing what would work, and what wouldn’t. Clearly they chose to bank on something that would never work.
For a game that literally took 8 fucking years to develop only for it to go down the drain in the end, this will go down in video game history as one of the biggest flops ever.
@@Zayd-u4k Nope, I said "one of the biggest flops", due to how low the player numbers (especially on Steam) are despite being in development for so long, which led to it being axed very quickly, although not anywhere near as bad as ET, which played a major role in the video game crash.

The biggest issue with the ability shooter market isn't really that the other games are free. It is that what people want isn't a new game but for Overwatch to be good again and that is never going to happen. Their plan to refund people who bought it at retail was "go to the store and return it," but returning open games is hard to do. Copyright Law says we're not supposed to refund an open game, we're only supposed to exchange it for another copy of the same, in case someone bought the wrong version or it was just broken out the case. I also took down a promotional sign that was like "Get Concord now on PlayStation Store!" I feel bad for the devs. I'm sure everything wrong with it was an executive decision, and those will be the people who absolutely will suffer no consequence from this - the devs are gonna take the hit, lose their jobs, etc.
I'm actually shocked they pulled the plug on Concord as fast as they did. So many companies go into maximum copium mode and keep the servers running for at least a year at around 100 players or less per day even when they panic and hit the F2P button.
Or they at least try to fix some of the things people complained about, I mean you spent over $200 million and 8 years developing it, you aren't even going to TRY to save it? They knew what they made was garbage and wasn't worth saving apparently.

There had to be at least one person (probably a lot more) who was passionate and good at what they do working on this, who didn't want to abandon ship or their team, and wanted to get some satisfaction from spending years on a massive Sony game. So they stayed through development hell and just did what they were told to do. Maybe they needed the job. Now, the game's just a slap in the face of their work. I cannot help but look at this mess and think of Atari's E.T. Moreover, how we look back on Atari's E.T. The game which produced 9million physical copies and sold 2.6million of them at $39.99 plus tax apiece. The rest of the 7million copies were literally dumped into a landfill. E.T. is notorious for more-or-less causing the Great Gaming Collapse of 1983-1984, and yet it still sold more copies and had more players than Concord. In the year of *1982* .
E.T was also largely developed by one man in 5 weeks. I'm not sure about its development cost but I assume under 100k. Selling millions of copies is actually impressive
fwiw, i recall that there was a project to dig through the supposed landfill and they found SOME copies, but nowhere near ~7 mil. it's possible that they straight scrapped a lot of them tho
The Video Game Crash of '83 (VGC 1) happened because the market was oversaturated with games that are mostly of poor quality, E.T. being the tipping point. I'm thinking VGC 2 will happen soon because the market is getting oversaturated with games that are either mostly of poor quality, has gameplay reliant on microtransactions, or both.

1. Market your game at least A LITTLE BIT
2. Don't make a generic live service

4. Don't spend 8 years on a game that's supposed to chase a current trend
5. make a good game
6.don't put things in no one cares about
They did market, they had a whole well made full sized trailer at games expos this summer.

8 years is an entire era in someone’s life. When these devs go to apply for new jobs, this isn’t something they can be proud of, it’s something they have to rehearse how to explain to prospective employers in their interview, and show pictures of instead of being able to stand on the success of the game. This is just unprecedented. Crazy to even think about.

In development for 8 years, Overwatch 1 came out on 24 May 2016. Did Sony ever hope to capture that lightning in a bottle after 8 years?
2:48 I want to play Glorbus’s Haemmorhoid Adventure now.
GPT premise for this game:
GLORBUS's Hemorrhoid Adventure
In the distant galaxy of Zorblon, there exists a quirky, misfit alien named Glorbus, a humble yet hopelessly clumsy space janitor working aboard the star cruiser *GalactaSweeper*. One day, during a routine maintenance check in the ship’s sanitation chamber, a bizarre cosmic accident causes Glorbus to develop a mysterious and rather inconvenient ailment: a sentient hemorrhoid that he names “Roid.”
To his surprise, Roid begins speaking to Glorbus, revealing itself to be an ancient cosmic entity with vast knowledge of the universe and a penchant for wisecracks.
**Key Gameplay Elements:**
- **Exploration and Puzzle-Solving:** Players will navigate various quirky alien worlds and spaceships, using Glorbus’s wits and Roid’s peculiar abilities to solve puzzles, access hidden areas, and overcome challenges.
- **Combat and Minigames:** Engage in comedic, fast-paced combat sequences against intergalactic foes, as well as absurd minigames such as "Intergalactic Bureaucracy Simulator," "Alien Karaoke Challenge," and "Space Dodgeball Showdown."
**Visual Style and Tone:**
The game would have a light-hearted, colorful, and cartoonish art style, blending sci-fi and humor in a unique way. Think of it as a cross between a Saturday morning cartoon and a zany, space-themed comedy show. The tone is irreverent and playful, with plenty of puns, quirky dialogue, and unexpected twists.
Someone needs to make this

1 Concord is now a unit of time measurement used to describe a period of between 1 to 2 weeks, and that's hilarious
"you could have sent all of them a dm" killed me dude
Days Gone was mid.

For a game that literally took 8 fucking years to develop only for it to go down the drain in the end, this will go down in video game history as one of the biggest flops ever.
Thanks tips
even worse than Sonic '06, Superman 64, and ET '83?
@@Zayd-u4k
I think more people have played those than Concord?
@@Zayd-u4k Nope, I said "one of the biggest flops", due to how low the player numbers (especially on Steam) are despite being in development for so long, which led to it being axed very quickly, although not anywhere near as bad as ET, which played a major role in the video game crash.
@user-sd3vd9nz2p genuinely curious, how was sonic 06 a flop? I remember getting and playing that game as a kid, and as far as I know lots of other people bought it as well. Sure it was massively buggy and stuff but it's a pleasant nostalgic mess nonetheless in my eyes.

The biggest issue with the ability shooter market isn't really that the other games are free. It is that what people want isn't a new game but for Overwatch to be good again and that is never going to happen. The people who like this genre have only really ever been invested in two games Overwatch and TF2 and that is because the character design and initial gameplay were great for both games.

I work in retail and defected out the two copies of the game we received that nobody bought yesterday. Their plan to refund people who bought it at retail was "go to the store and return it," but returning open games is hard to do. Copyright Law says we're not supposed to refund an open game, we're only supposed to exchange it for another copy of the same, in case someone bought the wrong version or it was just broken out the case. I also took down a promotional sign that was like "Get Concord now on PlayStation Store!"
I feel bad for the devs.

@@1Reddd Somebody was savvy on the marketing team because once a game gets down to that low of a player count AND a piss poor reputation, they're unsalvagable and will remain at like no players unless a huge turnaround happens and that could take a decade like No Man's Sky.

Not only are the designs generic and horribly unappealing, the gameplay is something we've seen before thousands of times with no unique flair, and the premise of 'Sci-fi space people shooting each other' is literally as generic as you can get. This feels like one of those fake games that the characters would play inside of a show, like for real, what greedy, out of touch executive looked at this and thought it would sell?

The Concord ship sunk so badly the Titanic came back and took notes
I work within the 3D industry, not as a game dev, but I have friends doing that for a living.
Despite the game being bad, 8 years of work thrown out the window in barely a month must be horrible to go through. Management and executives are at fault here, not just the devs.
It really sucks to be in those situations
@@philo- Indeed. It is a dumpster fire but I feel for the devs who were targeted as the only culprits. As devs we follow orders, even when we know the idea is shit. And at some point you also want to believe in what you're working on, it's a matter of pride and self-esteem. They were punished on both sides for things they weren't the main responsibles for.
3:02 I'm dying 😂😭😂🙏

I cannot help but look at this mess and think of Atari's E.T. Moreover, how we look back on Atari's E.T. The game which produced 9million physical copies and sold 2.6million of them at $39.99 plus tax apiece. The rest of the 7million copies were literally dumped into a landfill. E.T. is notorious for more-or-less causing the Great Gaming Collapse of 1983-1984, and yet it still sold more copies and had more players than Concord. In the year of *1982* .
Shit you're actually right
E.T was also largely developed by one man in 5 weeks.
