  • In this video I replace the coolant in a Toyota Previa. It probably never has been replaced before.
Had info that would need 12 liters, but only 8 liter of mixed glycol (ethelene) and salt and oxygenfree water. 50/50 mix. I do not use tap water!
Also relevant to Toyota Tarago, Toyota Estima.
    Milage: about 101820km

Hey I have a question. There is two drains for the coolant? One for the engine and the other for the tank?

Good video but the temperature gauge looks a little high.

Thank you for excellent video. Love your Previa. May I ask if the 8 Liters of coolant easily poured in white plastic radiator reservoir tank? After taking reservoir tank apart to clean, I noticed that inlet and outlet tubes are very thin or small; thus I would imagine that 8 Liters of coolant has a difficult time to drain into radiator from this reservoir. Also I am worried that if all coolant is drained, then water pump may be damaged unless system is filled with enough coolant fluid. Another issue is coolant air pockets. I read that coolant can be "bled" off to get rid of air pockets. Is your engine overheating? Cheers

      Thanks for your comment!
I overfilled it some and then drove around, especially in a steep road slowly, reversed a couple of times and put on the heater fan on full speed and felt heat coming (to get air out). This helped. I also "pumped" the big rubber hoses under the car and where the radiator is (with my hand) ie where the coolant goes. Some air has come out now and now the level is normal. I think you can bleed it if you remove the engine cover on passenger side, but I did not need to do this. I was also a bit worried that problems would occur, but had no problems. Hope it goes well for you too.

@@ScooterSimplicity Ok great thanks for tips and suggestions. I'm always learning new ways to "burp" or "bleed" radiator cooling system to get maximum efficiency. I read that on older cars (not just Previas), some owners install electric fans instead of using belt driven fans. Maybe this allows better air flow. I also learned that the thermostat needs to function at correct temp to allow engine to initially warm up and then coolant to flow through engine and radiator, after warming up to maximize engine functions. I'm going to try some of your methods and reinstall a new thermostat (last owner took it out) Thank you again. Cheers

Yes, indeed very clear and helpful video. The lower engine coolant plug is a very important drain too, because that is the lowest point, and much sediment can accumulate there. The bleeding of coolant system happens by driving it, as it has a upper reservoir, which allows the "closed" system to cipher out bubbles by time, temperature, and inertia. Interestingly enough, the oil has an upper reservoir too, which means for one, you have a bled circumbalance oil pathway, and 2, you can visually see any oil fluctuations in motor usage. Overheating in a 1990's model Toyota can mean 2 things: 1, a possibly sticking thermostat valve, and 2, a clogged heater core. Anything over 30 years or so, should have all the rubber hoses replaced, too ce'ce for swollen coolant hoses, may indicate a need for flush/overhaul of coolant path.. but as always, Start cheap first. A thermostat is a good place to remedy an abnormal overheating diagnosis. Best wish, Regards, Gio. PEACE.

O... I also have seen Volkswagens, that had after market oil coolers installed in line, sending the oil through gills similar to a radiator. Cooling the engine oil really helps stabilize temperature concerns especially in desert regions where atmospheric conditions are in consideration. PEACE e` le Grazie.

@@parrasparras4954 Thank you Parras for great info. I have been learning much about ICE cars by having older one. One day we won't have to worry about ICE :-) But for now there is certain joy in reviving older models as they are getting rare. I'm going to pay more attention to hoses, thermostat, heater core, and coolant path. Continued blessings.

Great video... So Previa radiator coolant has two drain holes?

    • @ScooterSimplicity

Thank you for your comment. Yes, two holes to drain. Might work with just the one under the motor but I prefer using the two drain locations to emty it out completly.

@@ScooterSimplicity ok great 👍 thanks... I recently bought a $1 radiator coolant test tube with 5 floating balls. I thought I had newer fresh 50/50 coolant but test tube had zero floating balls. All 5 balls needed to be floating to show enough correct coolant quality. So now I'm going to drain and fill with fresh coolant to see if overheating reduces. Thanks again 🙏

If I want to change the thermostat do I need to remove the oil filter before removing the thermostat housing?

    • @shamstar2k
      @shamstar2k Рік тому

I don't think so. Thermostat is under the driver's seat, held in by 2 bolts, you have to remove the accelerator cable bracket (1 bolt) and remove the inlet water hose. You have to also remove the bolts for the panel between the 2 seats and lift it up giving you enough clearance to get at the thermostat. Maybe make a video if you are doing this to show others.

Nice 👍 work, did you pour coolant into reservoir tank? I'm thinking it would take a long time or have difficulty for coolant to pass through empty radiator system because water pump may be far away.
