I honestly love Cinderella and how it shows how being a traditionally feminine woman doesn't mean they're weak.
She's typically seen or shun down by feminists and modern princess lovers due to her traditional values and femininity. But her staying strong after enduring an abusive household, and continued to be such a kind person is very admirable.
Also! Just a reminder that Cinderella wanted to go to the ball for the heck of it. She needed a break and just wanted to party for at least one night, but the prince was just the cherry on the top for her.

Exactly she was working her ass off she didn’t wish to be saved by the prince she just wanted to have a good time and she didn’t even realize he was the prince. Plus she’s super positive
cinderella isn't shunned or looked down on by feminists. she's shunned by _radical_ feminists (who are the ones who have a warped view of what feminism actually is). you look at it from the perspective of likely a young person who never experienced times when there was very little representation for most people. so looking back now it's easy for you to judge, but you don't really have a full understanding. the reason why cinderella wasn't as appreciated in the past as opposed to more recently, is because there basically _were no_ other types of women represented at the time (look at how women were portrayed in most of media from the 50s-70s, and even a lot of the 80s). yes, NOW we have princesses of all different kinds and female characters across multiple disney movies and shows who aren't the traditionally feminine type, but for a long time only quiet, polite, sweet little feminine women were considered ideal and all other women were treated as odd, unnatural, and undesirable at best.
it would be like someone forcing you to eat only one type of food for decades. you're probably not going to like that food very much if it's the only one you're allowed to have. but then eventually, you have more and more different types of foods and spices introduced into your diet, and you don't have only one option anymore. you're probably not going to go back to your original type of food for a long time, and you might even say you hate it! but maybe one day down the line you'll come to appreciate it again and start eating it every once in a while. that's how cinderella was for many.
so yes, even though cinderella's type is completely valid and she's a good character with strengths of her own, there was some push back against her not because she was traditionally feminine, but because it was the expectation shoved down everyone's throats for a very long time. now that there is more representation, it's easier to have a love and appreciation for cinderella too.

I recommend you check out Cinderella 3. Even though it's a sequel it's still amazing, maybe even better than the first movie. And the Prince actually becomes the best character in the movie.

@@azuroslazuli6948 it’s not as bad as it was when I was 14. I got away from my dad’s house. And now I’m 18, I’m still living with my mom. She’s nicer, but she’s still pretty ableist about my disabilities and we get into arguments a lot.
I am definitely am a survivor and a victim. I was abused by the schools in my state and my dad would abuse me a lot too. It went on for 14 years.
I see a lot of myself in Cinderella.

Growing up, Cinderella was a Disney film that I just sat and watched for the fun of it. As an adult, I actually appreciate it a lot more. I like the cast characters, mainly Cinderella, the mice, the Grand Duke, the Fairy Godmother, Lucifer, and even Lady Tremaine (she’s a despicably great villain).
One of the best feats of animation that I like is the transition of Cinderella from her rags to her ball gown, which by the way is something that Walt Disney himself really liked in this film. I also like some of the songs as well, mostly “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” “Bibidi Bobidi Boo,” and “So this is Love.”
So yeah, this film is very nice in my opinion.
Here’s some interesting facts such as the film saved the studio from near bankruptcy, Lady Tremaine voiced by Eleanor Audrey who also voiced Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and the Fairy Godmother voiced by Verna Felton who voiced Flora from Sleeping Beauty, Thumper’s mother from Bambi, the Matriarch and Mrs. Jumbo from Dumbo, Aunt Sarah from Lady and The Tramp, and her last role is Winnifred (Colonel Hathi’s wife) another matriarch elephant from The Jungle Book and it comes to full circle.
4:00 The type of animation used for this movie is called rotoscoping. They filmed the entirety of the script with live actors, then used that footage to trace over onto paper. They also did this with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It's one of my favorite styles of animations!
They even did that for *101 Dalmatians!* I remember watching the rough animation sketches and how lovely they were, particularly the animation for Rodger and Anita dancing.

I don't know, I think I saw on a dvd bonus feature somewhere they mentioned they never rotoscope/trace as the live action models are only for references for cloth movement e.t.c..
The hunchback of Notre Dame, Cinderella and the beauty and the beast take place in France and all roughly in the 16-1700’s
As a little girl I used to watch this movie almost every day we had it in VHS 🥺 I remember falling in love with Cinderella how wholesome she is, but my favorite part of the movie was when the king was swinging his sword 😂 I was entertained by attempted murder

As a little girl- I also felt the same as you. And I loved the kings hysterical scene as well! I also couldn’t help but sway along as Cinderella sang sweet nightingale although I didn’t understand the lyrics at the time 🥺
One of my fav moments is after Lucifer wrecks the carpet Cinderella straight up grabs a broom to beat him with it, girl has her limits lol
My mom is a victim of abuse and she told me back in her day as well as a long time ago you were forced to keep quiet about the abuse in your home by society as they believed they shouldn't be involved as well as it being uncomfortable subject to talk about it. I think that's why Cindy is tuck with her stepfamily that abused her daily. Thank heavens things are different nowadays.
Well this is during 19th century France, so it was most likely because women alone weren't allowed to do anything on their own. She has no other place to go. Your only way out of your family at the time was marriage :(
also if she isn't useful i can imagine how easy it would be for lady tremaine to just place her in an asylum. i hate when people say 'why didn't cinderella just leave'. Where would she go? The police wouldn't believe her.

This movie roughly takes place in 1860. Women did have jobs but I don't know how well they paid. Women also ran their own small businesses as well. BUT, the story of Cinderella, however, is quite different because of her situation. People blame her for not taking initiative to leave her abusive family and it's so stupid. Cinderella grew up without knowing what familial love should be. She was very young when her father passed and never knew her biological mother. Her step family is all she ever knew. To her, this abuse is normal because this is all she had. Guaranteed her step-mother had told her that if she ever left she would starve on the streets, or maybe destroy something that belonged to her biological parents, maybe even kill her pets (her horse and her dog). The audience needs to understand that there was so much manipulation going on starting at such a young age. If you pay attention to when she is talking with her dog, Bruno, in the kitchen, she mentions they should be thankful that they have a roof over their heads and beds to sleep in. She was manipulated to believe she would have it so much worse if she left. I see so many people victim blaming Cinderella and it just shows no one pays attention or even attempts to understand what she's mentally going through.
I was born in 1954. I read the newspaper daily and read the newspaper comics at age 8, 1964. The help wanted classified ads were in separate columns: men. women. Separate. The pay for women was legally much lower. The jobs for women were teacher, nurse, stewardess, cashier. That’s it.
Although nothing was spelled out, it also meant “white men. White women.” I’m sure anyone other than lily white knew what jobs were meant for them. My city was not known for any blatant racism like the South was. But it was here too.

"-motion captured though it's obviously not" - Actually it sort of is! The technique is called rotoscoping and is achieved through tracing over motion picture footage frame by frame. Hand-drawn animation from all eras have used it quite a lot, to achieve more believable movement (or cut down on costs). The studio would also hold workshops for animators and have models called in to provide reference footage for the actions that the characters were meant to be performing.
The voice actress of Cindy sadly developed Alzheimer’s in her later life but whenever she was upset the nurses would play her Cinderella soundtrack and she would calm down😊💙
You should watch Ever After, it's a real life Cinderella and the best, in my opinion. I bet Jane would love it too!

28:34 omg i like that you noticed, in the story, Cinderella has REALLY small feet, that's why even tho every maiden in the kingdom tried the shoe on, it fit no one because (i think) the average size for women were 7-9inches while Cinderella's was size 4
edit: also i think because of this, it's hard to find shoes that would fit her as it was reoccurring that her shoes fell off her feet (eg, at beginning of the movie when her shoe fell off when she was carrying breakfast to her step family)
It's also probably because women having small feet was fetishized for such a long time across many different cultures. It's really disgusting but it's true.

@@cake5736 it was especially bad in Asia. If you look up pictures about it, the feet of women in Asia back then are even smaller than Cinderella's. They even used to have women break their bones for smaller feet. The first time I really became of aware of this issue was my highschool Chinese class and now I can't look at those photos without throwing up.

There's another adaption of the Cinderella story called Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella that's definitely worth the watch! The cast has a lot of celebrities, including: Whoopi Goldberg, Whitney Houston, Jason Alexander, Brandy Norwood and Bernadette Peters!
It's a musical but all the songs are different from the Disney adaptation so it's not stale at all. I watched it a lot as a kid, and rewatched it recently. It holds up to this day in my opinion and it's a gorgeous movie. The costumes are great and the choreography and music are awesome.
I actually grew up with the original version starring Leslie Ann Warren. I totally forgot they remade it in the 90s. XD
I come from a black family with migrant parents and my brothers and I grew up with TONs of Disney, I love it and general animation today. It plays a part in my (hopeful) career path.

You're right, they didn't have motion capture back then. However, they did have a technique in similar spirit called rotoscoping. Basically, they'd film live action actors playing out the scenes how they were supposed to look & then the animators would trace over that footage (frame by frame) to make the animated characters movements more realistic.
Women COULD work back then, but their options were limited. essentially Cinderella could find work as a servant, receive more or less the same treatment and be compensated with pocket money.
Clogs are actually not that uncomfortable. And theres really nothing some warm, woollen socks cant fix. They were worn on the fields to protect your feet from nails etc. so leather shoes and even some modern shoes wouldnt compare to their safety.
Also, most of Disney's stories are just retelling old folktales with the true ending replaced with a 'happily ever after'. It wasnt that uncommon for kids to have lost at least one of their parents in those times.
Since you did ask about the setting and the story the movie is based on, if you don't mind a bit of info-dumping, the evolution and spread of myth, legend, and folk tales has been a special interest of mine for decades.
Disney based many of their earlier feature films on stories collected by the Brothers Grim in the 1800s. The brothers traveled about Europe collecting and rewriting old fairy tales and folk stories that had been passed down by oral tradition for generations. Cinderella, in the form it is best known, was first recorded in the 1600s. However, it is an archetypal story with many different versions from various cultures around the world dating back to at least somewhere around the transition from the last century BCE to the first century CE where it was told about a Greek slave girl who ended up marrying Pharoah, who identified her via her sandals.
As Disney is want to do, they altered the story from the source material quite a bit. The Grim's version is quite a bit darker. They also decided to set it in what is likely sometime during the last half of the 1800s in France, based on the costuming, architecture, and surnames. I don't know near as much about the inheritance laws and available jobs for young women in France at the time as I do for England and America, but there wouldn't have been much. And most likely, what there was would have made her situation with her stepmother and sisters seem like paradise by comparison.

No mention of Charles Perrault?? It was his version that Disney based this movie on for the most part, rather than the Brothers Grimm, as he's the one who introduced the concept of the Fairy Godmother and the pumpkin carriage and such.

I'm so glad to hear that you're going to do the old Disney movies! May I suggest, "Sleeping Beauty," the artwork is unbelievable and Maleficent is something else as the villainess. And then, I also recommend the live-action movie, "Maleficent," starring Angelina Jolie in the title role. She owned it.
and really like how the second sister starts to change hersel from the evil sister to good one in the sequel she is like i don't wanna be mean anymore i think it was anastasia that started to change
The word you're looking for with clocks that have hands are Analogue clocks.
The one specifically here is even harder as it's in roman numerals as well. I was specifically taught analogue with roman numerals since my grandmother looked after me a lot after school (her house was literally a minute walk away) because of my mom and dad working. Most of her clocks when I was young were all in roman numerals, so they fast tracked the normal method of reading to get to the roman numerals lol.
I'm glad movies like these didn't ruin my love for cats. Even as a kid I thought cats weren't getting fair treatment in a lot of animated movies, always portrayed as bad. Of the few good cats in animated movies I remember from my childhood there 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats, An American Tail, and Cats Don't Dance.

Hi JV! I think you should really check out the new CINDERELLA LIVE ACTION movie played by Lily James. It shows more in depth characters of both Cinderella and Lady Tremaine. It gives you the villain's background, shows Cinderella's power, the prince's character, AND the depth of their relationship even more.
I believe the original story came from France circa 1600. According to the fairy tale, Cinderella had the smallest feet in the kingdom. All these early classics are masterpieces

i would really recommend watching cinderella 3: a twist in time!!! it’s personally a really good sequel to the original and i love it so much! there’s a lot more action so i think you’d really like it :)
I loved this Cinderella as a kid. As an adult, I liked that even though she was 'beat down' in her role as a servant in her own home, she was still feisty and kept her positive attitude.

so glad you're doing this film! my two best friends and I all love the three classic princess movies (Snow White, cinderella and sleeping beauty) and we each have one favorite of the three, mine being this one. even though I grew up watching sleeping beauty more, this film just stuck with me in a way that sleeping beauty didn't. I think it's because it's such a soft film, and I tend to like those a lot. you should definitely check out the live action version with Lily James from 2015, it's one of my top 5 favorite films of all time and I feel keeps the spirit of the original while still being different
also, a fun fact: I'm swedish, and here every Christmas they air the 1958 Disney Christmas special "from all of us to all of you" on Christmas Eve, when we celebrate. in it they include several short clips from various Disney films and shorts - the dress making scene from cinderella being one of them, so I know that one basically by heart along with the dinner scene from lady and the tramp and the dance from Snow White
Recently I saw a tumblr post illustrating how maybe over the short time the prince was talking with Cinderella, maybe the things Cinderella was saying about her personal life was giving the prince red flags like “obviously this beautiful girl is being mistreated at home, I must find her again, I have to make sure she’s ok” and I really like that interpretation

Hey, now, I'm black and my mom bought me all the Disney movies. I'm also American and my family never immigrated here. I get what you mean tho. I had a lot of friend's who's parents felt too much TV and cartoons was unproductive.
It was family time for us.
"Just a regular girl", would make her a peasant as opposed to nobility or royalty. And generally speaking, Royalty/Nobility didn't mix with peasantry. That's what makes the story of Cinderella, & stories & cases like it - a "fairytale" story...
If you've never seen Ever after with Drew Barrymore, & Angelica Houston you should. It's not animated, but it's a live VERSION of Cinderella. I love it. And based on your reaction to many of the Animated/Disney Films, I think you'd love it too.
Also the movie The Wedding Singer with Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler is great (IMO), although it's not Animated or a so called Fairytale.
A lesser reacted to film is The Secret Garden authored originally by the same Author who wrote A Little Princess , & Little Lord Fauntleroy (the latter of which I've never read, or watched the movie). But I love the 1993 version of The Secret Garden.
Also The Black Stallion (1979) & The Black Stallion Returns (1983) are fantastic horse films based on the books by Walter Farley.
Also the Movie "Moll Flanders" with Stockade Channing from Grease, Morgan Freeman, & Robin Wright, who the Princess Bride, Jenny in Forest Gump, & Antiope (the one who trained her for combat) in Wonder Woman 2017, is a terrific film with an orphan heroine. And then there's 2012 Les Miserables (with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, & Amanda Seyfried), is a terrific movie/musical based on the book by Victor Hugo, who also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It is about the Less Fortunate in society, such as convicts, prostitutes, & orphans. But follows the lives of one specific convict, prostitute, & orphan whose lives intersect....I absolutely loved this version of it.
I sew... The last 2 things I made were a carry pouch for my little bitty Miniature Pinscher, & a coat for her, both of which I designed myself.
If you notice, many of the best stories, books, & movies throughout history are about Orphans/ Half Orphans/Adoptees. I'm an Adoptee. BTW, the terminology STEP Mother/Father, Sister, Brother, is terminology to create a link where there is none. Meaning they are no relation. They are strangers. Yet the child is coerced, brainwashed, or forced to think of them & call them relation. The same thing happens with Adoption. You are integrated/or legally trafficked, (depending on the situation & how you want to look at it, into a family not your own, a strange place with strangers, & told "This is your family now", & you have little or no say about it. You're name & identity is changed, you are given an amended Birth Certificate with altered facts, & your Records are Closed & Sealed. Yes open adoption is sometimes available nowadays. But those can become like a closed Adoption at any time, If the Adoptive parents choose not to honor the open agreement. There's nothing in place to stop them, from my understanding. Okay - Sorry for that tangent - it's just I think the #script should be flipped - when it comes to the ethics & laws surrounding Adoption, & Relationships between adults & children, where the children's rights & protection are not honored or considered....

I didn't watch this version of Cinderella as a kid either. We had another timeless classic :) It's translated as Three Wishes for Cinderella and it's a Czech/East German co-production film from 1973. It is on TV every single Christmas in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, Norway and possibly other European countries. Apparently it was released in English too, so if you wanted to check out a different version and could get your hands on a copy, it really is quite charming ;)
interesting that her dress is silver but in all the Disney Princess marketing they made it blue. Apparently it was because it seemed too much like a wedding dress
The Cinderella live action is the best Disney live action movie in my
opinion they really show her kindness and character, that’s what I think is unique about Cinderella as a princess.
I hope you watch Ever After 💜 ever after is very different from this story in a lot of ways.

Cinderella is my favorite princess out of the originals.
As an adult, this movie hits different. Her step “family” really was so evil. I can’t get over the scene where they keep ringing the bells and the step mom giving her extra work, when Cinderella is already doing so much. Then there’s the dress ripping scene. It’s just cruel.

I was exposed to it because of the Disney Channel in the 80's. It wasn't cheap to have that channel. I also owned a lot of the VHS tapes of Disney. My parents kept Disney in my wheelhouse.

You are right that it’s not motion captured animation, but they did rely heavily on live action references during this time period where they were drawing some very realistic-looking humans. If you look on UA-cam, you can find these reference sessions! I don’t know if there’s as much rotoscoping (basically tracing over reference footage) as there was in Snow White since this was like 13 years later and they’d had more practice, but that’s a good sign when you can’t pinpoint rotoscoping. 😆

In Cinderella 2 interesting scenes with the mice and everything it was an interesting sequel but never has three the stepsister really did had character development I think but I don't remember what's the year difference between Cinderella 1 and Cinderella 2 and Cinderella 3 but I must have took them a couple years difference for each one

The time period would have been mid-to-late 1800’s (although the original story would have been 1600’s, the Disney adaptation takes place later in the 1800’s) I don’t think there would have been very many options for an unwed woman to be working and living on her own, she’d probably have to join a convent.

Cinderella is my all time favorite from Disney. It's my childhood and I probably still have the cassette somewhere in the storage.
You should watch all sequels of Cinderella. 2 is definitely my favorite although I grew up watching 1 a lot.

Cinderella was my favorite princess when i was younger! I enjoy modern princesses/heroines more today but i hate when people say she's a bad female character just because of the old time... I mean she's kind and positive but also very strong to bear all of this all these years and what else could she do? She couldn't run away that easy without money or place to go...
Also i recommand you the 2015 Cinderella remake. I usually don't like Disney's remakes but this one was well done i think, it has a touch of modernity but keep the fairy tale spirit which is very nice!

I had this movie on VHS as a kid and watched it so much that I actually broke it lol I distinctly remember the day it broke and we announced "Cinderella finally bit the dust" and we all had a laugh 😂 I love that you're going back and watching all these Disney Princess classics! Listening to you for the 1st 8 minutes I'm like there have been like a dozen Cinderella movies both animated and live action including variations. You sound like you've never once seen any of them.

The back poofy thing on a dress is a Bustle. Pannier are the poofy ones on the sides. Crinoline are the large poofy dresses like they wear at balls, formals, weddings, etc...

Actually, The Fairy Godmother's spell against Lucifer was more like it's gonna sting or smack his butt rather than turn him into something consindering his never changed into something (or at least seen turn into something but I still to my theory cuz it's more obvious).

I think the movie is set somwhere in the 19:th century. No doubt the movie is set in France consindering it was based on the Charles Perrault (though some parts were inspired by the Grimm Bros. version), Cinderella and the Tremaines live in a chateau and you see the french lily motive in the chateau.

Cinderella is a great Disney classic, it's one of the most magical princess movie! One of my favorite scenes from Disney movies is the dress transformation. Cinderella's fairy Godmother is so cute. And the King is so crazy and funny.
Please please please, watch RIO, available at Disney Plus. It's an amazing movie, so adorable and at the same time it talks about a very serious theme in the world, which is the illegal sale of wild animals. And, as you may have already imagined, it takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! It's so good!
