For the record, even if you take out the fantasy elements, a royal not being invited to the birth of a royal child was considered as bad as a declaration of war in medieval times. So of course Maleficent was going to take action after finding out she wasn't invited/wanted (she also just happens to be the best kind of petty about it).
Also, I love how the main characters in this film aren't actually the prince or princess: it's the Three Good Fairies AKA the trio that are usually the sidekicks in any other Disney film.

Well, they didn't invite Maleficent as she is obviously a real rotten person and very dangerous. While we don't know what she had done apart using her magic to freeze Flora's beautiful flowers, we can speculate that being an evil sorceress she is, she must have done a lot of terrible things to the kingdom and its citizens, not to mention to King Stefan and his wife.

Mary Costa was a Tennessee native with a thick Southern accent when she auditioned for Princess Aurora and was surprised to learn she had been chosen by Disney. Walt reportedly said: 'If Vivien Leigh a beautiful English lady could play a southern girl in Gone With the Wind, then surely a southern girl can play an English princess.'

Yes, and Mary Costa learned very well how to do a neutral "mid-Atlantic" stage accent for the movie. (I can hear a slight hint of Southern on one or two words, but only because I'm listening for it and have seen the movie so many times.) She had a substantial operatic career after this movie, appearing at many front-rank opera houses including the Met. I saw her onstage once, in Leonard Bernstein's operetta Candide.

Before I heard the quote from Mary Costa, I assumed that the arranged marriage was some kind of politicking related to the German-French border, in which case Hubert and Phillip could have been French and Stefan and Aurora could have been German - although their being English and it being England-France diplomacy could work just as well...

She has no idea she’s in real danger and is in too much shock from learning that nothing in her life is true, to think to ask why. I believe this film is based on the original fairytale, of course, but also the ballet composed by Tchaikovsky. Lyrics were written for the main melody of the waltz, and it became the song, "Once Upon a Dream". So you're absolutely correct, the music for this film is indeed a masterpiece!

It actually grossed 5.3 million at the box office and the budget was 6 million as you said so the movie was considered a box office bomb. It’s crazy as this along with Alice in Wonderland(1951) are some of my favorite animated Disney movies with both being failures when they came out.
The reason they hid Aurora away as a baby is because the curse says it will happen before the sun sets on her 16th birthday but doesn’t specify when so it could happen anytime before then.
I always assumed the cooking & dress making fiasco to be because the fairies had predefined roles/jobs they decided to switch for whatever reason. If you listen carefully Merryweather specifically says _Fauna_ has never cooked before which may be true as either her or Flora may have been the usual cook.
The moving brooms are from the Sorcerer’s Apprentice scene in Fantasia. Very iconic.
No spoilers but they changed up *a lot* of the story for Maleficent. It’s not a bad movie yet it’s so different you might as well think of it as a completely different thing. It does give more motivation, but to me that is sort of unnecessary as well as sometimes detrimental to the awhile concept of a villain. They don’t always need a potentially sympathy inducing backstory as it can take away from them being seen as true villains.

The amazing thing about this is the voice talent in this film! Once Walt liked a voice actor, he would tend use them again and again. Verna Felton (Flora) started at Disney as one of the UNPLEASANT elephants in "Dumbo", and went on to voice the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella", The Queen of Hearts in "Alice in Wonderland", and Aunt Sarah in "Lady and the Tramp". Her final role was the voice of Winnifred the Elephant in "The Jungle Book". Coincidentally she died the same day that Walt Disney himself died.

The fairies being without magic for 16 years but managed to do well for themselves can be explained by what they've said. It's implied that Fauna and Flora likely switched their roles on their last day. Merryweather, despite being most against living like a mortal, seemed to have learned how to do both cooking and sewing. She was the one who wanted to make the dress and knew what "tsp" stood for.
And for Merryweather being able to turn Diablo the raven into stone, Fauna's exact words about how their magic works is that it can only do good to bring joy and happiness. Stopping Diablo would be considered good, and Merryweather would be all too happy to shut the raven up. So Merryweather basically found a loophole to their magic.

Sleeping Beauty is one of the animated films that I like the villain most of all. I mean, the Good Fairies have their moments and (imo) the two kings, but Maleficent is the most engaging character in the film. Eleanor Audley did an amazing job voicing her character, she also voiced Lady Tremaine, the wicked Stepmother in Cinderella. If/When you watch Maleficent just take it as a different story, not a retelling. I love the 1959 Sleeping Beauty, the visuals, the music, and the fairy-tale story (hey in the 1950s having a Prince go against his father's orders was pretty radical). The makers of the 2014 Maleficent didn't seem to share this love of the 1959 film as it tells an entirely different version, which is interesting and creative but drastically changes all the characters within it (some for the good while others for the worst). It feels more like a version of "Wicked" than Sleeping Beauty. It should be interesting to hear your take on it.

actually, the difference is that Wicked is not as dark as Maleficent. It gives some depth and adds more background. If it would be only Maleficent in an Elphaba style, it would have been perfect. But the way the fairies were turned in ridiculous pixies with even different names and Aurora wouldn't be reunited with her parents - (who are dead then in the ending)...it's not even possible to reunite it with the canon, whereas Wicked can work with the basic canon, but just adds a "secret background"....

True Taylor Holmes did voice Stefan in the Final Cut, but did you know Hans Conried was supposed to voice King Stefan, even if he did model the character. I was wondering if Holmes turned down the role for his age and failing health and allow Conried to voice Stefan. (To me, Holmes kinda ruined the movie as he made Stefan sound too much like a hypocrite, up to the point where his personality is inconsistent and is more like King Hubert’s. The casting of Holmes does not help either.) I wonder if this would allow the Skumps scene to be set in the beginning in order for Aurora to become more interesting like Cinderella is.

@@throughthelookingglass5973as I tolerate your opinion, to me, he made Stefan sound too old and a hypocrite like Thomas Jefferson was and it felt Holmes was uninterested in the role, which goes to show I have very mixed feelings about his performance as Stefan. As I said in my posts, Hans Conried would have been a lot more better as King Stefan because he would have basically gave Stefan a lot more specific personality and a much Frenchier accented voice to the character to compliment the French setting of the film, if Holmes just turned down the role to just do the singing role and just do Lady and the Tramp. That way we can figure out that it really took place in France. Or if they just agreed shared the role like Martha Wentworth and Barbara Jo Allen did as the Maid in The Sword in the Stone (Conried for the Skumps scene and Holmes for the remaining scene. Better yet Conried for the speaking role (as he had done as a fatherly voice for Horton in Horton Hears a Who) and Holmes for the speaking role as I said in my posts). That would be if the Skumps scene was to take place in the beginning (like the cut song, It Happens I Have a Picture) before the curse scene at the party, which could have at least given both Aurora and Queen Leah more screen time and proactive roles as characters. That way I think this film would have been much better off if it weren’t for Walt’s recklessness. Holmes being casted as Stefan for the Final Cut is the reason why I view Aurora as a bland character with no specific personality or any heroic role, same goes for Leah. Don’t get me wrong, Holmes was actually more tolerable and better as the singing role and the only few times where his voice performance sounded good was when he ordered his guards to arrest Maleficent and when reuniting with Aurora. Well, thanks for NOTHING, Taylor Holmes! Opinion tolerated still.

@@matthewhedrichjr.5445I respect your opinion. But what I find a bit unfair is judging Aurora's character based on who played her father. I fail to see how that is relevant when Aurora had only one scene with her parents outside from when she was an infant. And all she did was hug her parents. In my humble opinion, Aurora's blandness came from her lack of screen time and interest in fleshing out her character. On the other hand, we see Aurora's sassiness with the three fairies. So she showed some character. I think Walt Disney followed his old formula of rooting for the helpless, beautiful princess, which worked for many years in his career until the late 1950s when the mass public desired more contemporary stories.

Anyways, the reason why Aurora is a large step back and bland is because she didn’t have screen time than the rest of the princess before and after her, mostly due to the king scene being used as a filler in which that didn’t lead to anywhere and with Holmes giving an incredibly bland performance as Stefan. Also, if the Skumps scene was to be set in the beginning and have Conried do the role, this would have made Aurora interesting as Cinderella is (despite being viewed as weak by the brain dead media). Maleficent’s curse:
In the original story, the king was one gold tableware set short. So he set one mismatched platter for a guest. At the bad hospitality, the Fey that was slighted placed the curse. (In old stories, fairies care more about being good hosts and guests than anything else; even the slightest insult causes a huge retribution).
In this one, there was a schism between the fairies. A christening isn’t meant to be a political event, and all are invited. But by not inviting Maleficent the formerly neutral kingdom joined her enemies and insulted her.
If the king had invited both, the curse wouldn’t happen. In fact, Maleficent would take the opportunity to passively fight the Three Good Fairies by giving the superior gift.

The voice actress of Maleficient is played by the same woman who voiced the evil stepmother in the original Disney Cinderella. This was also the very first Disney movie to use obscenity as well. There is a reason that this movie is a classic and timeless.... and the reason it inspired so many movies many decades later. Thanks for sharing and I hope you introduce this movie to your little princess too. ~be well~

Most of the music (if not all) was from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, arranged by Disney Composer George Bruns (who also did the music for 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stonr, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and Robin Hood.).

The last shot when Aurora and Phillip is dancing among the clouds, that was meant to be first happen in Snow White when she sings Someday My Prince Will Come but Disney wanted to focus on the dwarfs reactions. Then it was meant to be used in Cinderella when she and Prince Charming was dancing in the garden, while the song Dancing on A Cloud was playing, but the idea was scrapped and the song changed to So THis Is Love. Now finally Disney got to recycle the idea again and it stayed in the movie.

I love this movie. It's so incredible how every single thing is hand drawn. Plus Maleficent makes the movie. If you haven't checked out work by Eleanor Audley, Maleficent's voice actor and animation model, please do. She was extremely talented. Andreas Deja, the animator of Scar and Jafar, met her when he was starting out in the 80s and told a story on his blog about going to a Thanksgiving dinner where Ms. Audley was also a guest. He wrote that at one point during dinner, she asked him to pass the gravy, and all he heard was Cinderella's stepmother. He immediately passed the gravy.

11:10 Perraults French version of the fairytale was 'Sleeping Beauty' and her name was Aurora. The Grimm's brothers German version of the Fairytale was 'Briar Rose' and that was her name. So they've made a reference to both versions.

The color changes was based on a real argument the animators had. They couldn't decide on the color for Aurora's dress. So they made it a gag in the movie.

The music sequences matching up with the animation is no accident. Disney classics usually use this technique. It is actually called Mickey Mouse-ing. Many other movies adopt this in order to put emphasis on certain actions and emotions in a scene. It can help create tension, fear, and comedy to a sequence. One movie that does it well (which I didn't actually notice until someone told me) is The Shining.

This movie is pretty good, especially for its time. Maleficent is one of my favorite villains. And you can feel the desperation in the final escape and battle. Sure maleficalent maybe died a little fast, but you can feel how strong she really was. having the fairies to help was a good touch. Theu can't do everything for him, but they can aid his endeavor.

You’re very right to recommend this movie. It’s one of the quintessential Disney movies of all time: a lovely princess, a take-action prince, a signature song you’re guaranteed to smile at, three plucky protagonists, and one of the most deliciously evil villains ever. And to think, nine years earlier, she was the voice of Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s absolutely monstrous stepmother.

Malificent wasn't going to do anything if she was invited ,this story seems very much like the wedding of goddess Thetis and the mortal Peleus ,where everyone is invited to the party but the goddess of discord . Because of that goddess Eris got mad and made the golden apple of discord which triggered the trojan war . Maybe if they invited them nothing would have happened ,but prejudace is a thing for some reason.

It’s a long time ago now, but it seems to me that when I was little, the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale was told to me as the curse was for her to sleep 100 years. I can’t remember the details of how the prince found her in order to give her her first true loves kiss, but the 100 years sticks in my memory somehow. In this movie, it looks like it only lasts one night. 🤷‍♀️😄

I think the three fairies traded up their usual chores since it's their last day to try something new - pretty sure that Merryweather (blue) did most of the cooking given that she was instructing Fauna (green). Fauna probably made the clothes and such when needed. Not too sure what Flora (red) usually did other than bossing the other two and watching Rose, lol
Maleficient's motive was pretty clear at the beginning - she was grossly disrespected at a public function and was avenging the insults. Only one in the kingdom Not invited, told she wasn't wanted, and when she was ready to leave it at that, the Queen broke the proverbial straw.
In the original fairytale, there were 13 fairies and the princess was cursed by the 13th because the king and queen served the first 12 on gold plates and gave silver plating to the 13th.
