- In this video we look at Seachem Purigen. We get asked often if this product is any good, and truth be told, it is amazing. But instead of telling people that, we thought we would show you.
To start with we hit this 150L aquarium with some Sera Aquatan, and we hit it really hard. The water was nearly black when we put the Purigen in. Over the course of a week, Purigen did it's magic until we had a sparkling clear aquarium again.

How do you recharge your Purigen?
Soak it in a bleach solution, then soak it in prime. From memory Seachem have a "recharge" product. But I don't it is in NZ.

Seachem says purigen will not affect pH. Not true. Use your pH test kit and you will see that purigen will lower your pH. Why the lies?
I am not sure sorry, you will probably need to bring that up with Seachem themselves. We have a FFCD lined up with a Seachem rep fairly soon, you might be able to ask them then.

Yeah I was surprised about that when I started doing blackwater tanks. It takes very little tint to make the tank look fairly dark. If you scoop out a glass and have a look at it under light, it looks just barely tinted.
Certainly does take very little to tint the aquarium water compared to when it comes out.
Does it remove the liquid plant fertilizer?
I don't believe so.
Can you just rinse it out after and use it again 🤷✌️🇨🇦🙏
You need to bleach it off to recharge it

You needed to do this with a dirty sponge filter not the tint for the water, the purigen goes after the the ammonia and nitrogenous elements in the water, not tannins

For sure, but I can assure you I don't use it in any of the BW tanks for that reason.
I believe so..at least I know now what product i need to apply when I'm having trouble with my tank.
Does this stuff really help reduce nitrates? And can it be used alongside with carbon? Like both in same filter?
It can be used with carbon, but probably a bit redundant to do so. Good question re nitrates, not sure, but i suspect not. I will do some testing

Using natural flora I have managed a Blackwater tank that is dark, very dark but not murky, and alongside is my crystal clear water tank, no chemicals in either, all fish going gangbusters, lots of water changes for both tanks from a rainwater tank, country area so no contaminated rain.

That's all it does, removing colorants. Maybe smells. Carbon does that too for cheap. The rest of the claims are Seachem style pure BS.
Far better than carbon after a month carbon will start leaching what it caught back in the water where as purigen will not
@@aquaticsal6524 carbon doesn't leach back what it's got. Pound for pound purigen holds quite a bit more than carbon though
Besides the fact that you're wrong in what it removes (it does far more), Purigen lasts longer, and is regeneratable multiple times. Versus carbon which clogs quickly and is tossed.
