Hello Rick. Very nice story and Milton Berle trivia. It was the same with my father. He had 6 brothers, and he got the hand me down shoes and the curled-up toes as a result. As an adult, he would always still cut slits in the toe area of his non-work, or non-dress shoes for more comfort. Keep up the great work.

Thank you Rick for bringing together more trivia from the past. Many of us that grew up with Uncle Milty, really appreciate your research. Also, bringing together the fact, that many also do forget that actors and actresses, have the same issues with life as everyone else! Cheers. Dan

My father was in the same boat as Mr Berle growing up. His toes are also curled up.
When I was a kid I always had new shoes. My father was also on top of making sure they were not too small.
It's something I have done with my kids just because I saw my father doing it. I now understand why he did that.

What a touching story; it really helps us empathize with others when you know just a little bit more of their story. I read a great biography about Elvis Presley that explained that, other than when he was playing a character in a movie, Elvis never again wore jeans once he started making money as a singer because they reminded him of the poverty he and his family suffered when he was a little boy.

It is during one of the upload parts here on UA-cam of Larry Hagman’s on camera interview for The Archive Of American Television that I first learned from Hagman regarding his own shocked visual discover of Berle’s deformed feet and Berle’s explanation to Larry of how his feet got that way. Larry was truly humbled by the experience- you could readily tell, and expressed great respect for Berle’s determination, and stamina through all the years he suffered with the pain from that condition to give so many entertaining moments of laughter to everyone.

Great video! A few more interesting facts. The actor next to Milton Berle playing the chauffeur and waiter on the yacht is one of the directors who worked on the show, Hal Cooper. Apparently, the actor who was supposed to play the part became ill and Mr. Cooper volunteered to fill in. Also, NBC goofed. Originally, the three episodes filmed in Hawaii were supposed to be the first to air for season 3. For some reason, this was changed, though NBC still aired the third Hawaii episode as the third episode of the season (Sept. 26, 1967). The FIRST Hawaii episode, which shows Tony & Roger leaving for the trip, aired as the 14th episode (Dec. 26, 1967), with the next Hawaii episode airing as the 15th episode (Jan. 2, 1968). It's too bad this wasn't corrected and shown in the correct order for syndication.

Nice informative video again, some other facts about Milton. Other commedians of the time made a point to say if their joke was good that Milty would eventually steal it, haha Also and Ill put a x rating on this comment that Uncle Milty loved the young girls and they loved him. Red Foxx once told a joke that the Hollywood fire department had a hose shortage so they signed Uncle Milty up to help put out the fires !! haha Good job Rick.

I’ve always heard it say that our past forms our today and what we experience today forms our future. In the case of MB, it may be the case of I can now afford expensive new shoes and I’m going to buy and wear as many as I can, or it could have been his feet were so bad, that he had to wear special fitting shoes (which are very expensive) and then change into different pairs of these shoes frequently because they bothered him after awhile. Actors do stand on their feet a lot more than you think. Great video and great insight into the legend that was Berle! Thank you Rick!

I absolutely loved Milton Berle ! I really enjoyed learning this information..it really does show a side of him that maybe a lot of people don’t know, especially the vulnerability. Just like you said, maybe people like us who aren’t famous or wealthy don’t think about it, we just assume like you said they are “rich” they could fix whatever is wrong ie feet- and then like you said taking things to an opposite extreme of many shoes because he didn’t grow up with a lot. Thanks Rick for your research of all your videos..💜

That title's so evil if you know about Miltie's rumored feature... Famous feet can be a shock. A comics pal of mine was at a convention hotel during a midnight fire evacuation. Standing outside, Bob saw Forrest J Ackerman dressed but barefoot. Bob said Forry's bare feet were "like Imhotep's feet! They were yellow parchment with crazy toenails!" Forry was a friend, but I never asked to see his feet.

Another piece of trivia about this episode: the bald man seen behind Milton Berle, who was playing a sort of henchman to Berle's conman, was played by tv director, Hal Cooper. Cooper & this episode's director, Claudio Guzman, had both travelled to Hawaii to direct various episodes of this trilogy. When the actor who'd been hired to play the part was stuck back in LA on another job, Cooper took over the job for a rare acting job for him.

Hi Rick, when I look back to my childhood in the 1960's there were stories from friends, neighbors, teachers and my parents about life in America during the Great Depression. Some of the stories were hard to believe, until a TV talk show host named Merv Griffin interviewed all the big names in Movies and TV, all the way back to the silent movie era. Lucille Ball told Merv that she grew up so poor that she would steal food to survive. Lucy said, "few people born after the 1950's really know poverty, but it plays a role in the lives of many great actors of the 20th century".

I never met any of the celebrities who came into town to entertain, but my father was a pharmacist on the Las Vegas Strip, in a store next-door to the Desert Inn Hotel, at the time. He came home one evening very pleased with himself. Guess who came into the store today, he said. Well. Barbara Eden had been in, and dad said she was the nicest of the bunch. She had all that long hair down to the small of her back, and he asked her, "Barbara, how much of that beautiful hair is yours?" and she was generous. "About down to here " (slightly below the shoulders) "is me," she said, "and all the rest of the way down it is a minor expense." I am sure she looked fantastic. What a sparkle, right? She winked, paid for her goods in cash, and departed in her very lovely, well-kept joy.

I heard Larry Hagman confronted Milton about this. He told him the same story. My 1st job was at a themed park in Houston, TX. It gets here. A buddy of mine, age 17 while on lunch break confided in me "As soon a I get home, I'm gonna soak my CORNS!" My parents made sure that my shoes always fit properly. Young growing feet NEED TLC. When I'd be in wardrobe, there was a shocking amount of teenage boys suffering from corns/ bunions. I then felt truly blessed that my parents took care of me. While Milt could have those nice shoes/ the damage had already been done. Toe straightening & surgery wasn't there yet.

Oh yes if you never listened to his old radio variety shows, much of his humor was based off of being poor as a child and not wanting to spend money on anything as an adult. I’m hoping his feet were not actually deformed from his shoes as a child although it’s possible but it’s also possible Barbara Eden was just young and beautiful at the time and not used to looking at an old man’s feet , he was already close to 70 when this episode was filmed

Well, apparently small clothing didn't stunt the growth of something else... 😂

Never mind the shame of not having decent shoes! The physical pain he must have gone through. Reminds me of the horror Chinese women(all classes) endured for 1000 years until as little as almost a century ago when women there were forced to have their feet bandaged extremely tight to keep them from growing(known as footbinding) creating permanent deformity all because the men loved small feet on women and they were fearful women would run away! Barbaric!

The real question is once she got over the shock did she take a ride on his bologna pony?
