I "converted" a few racists when I was in the military, in the early 80's it wasn't zero tolerance like it is today and guys could say what they wanted to you and I was in the Coast Guard which was 99% white. Being from the south I knew how to deal with racists and one of the biggest racist on my base I ended up being his best man at his wedding pissing his entire family off. Over 35yrs later we're still good friends today, prejudice is a learned behavior.

First time I watched it was on Starz back in the late 90s. I heard there was controversy around it but I didn’t know what it was going into it. That was the first time I didn’t get up during a movie for any reason. One of my top films to this day.

The scene he described is my favorite of the film as well. I watched this movie as a young kid and thought it was amazing and it still hits me the same watching it as an adult. American History X is one of those films where when I comes on tv, I gotta watch it.
Definitely my favorite part of the movie. It plausibly showed how a man as consumed with hatred as Derek was could be slowly and steadily changed for the better. Derek's trajectory was directly because of how credibly Guy portrayed a good man showing him the way.
