I "converted" a few racists when I was in the military, in the early 80's it wasn't zero tolerance like it is today and guys could say what they wanted to you and I was in the Coast Guard which was 99% white. Being from the south I knew how to deal with racists and one of the biggest racist on my base I ended up being his best man at his wedding pissing his entire family off. Over 35yrs later we're still good friends today, prejudice is a learned behavior.

It plausibly showed how a man as consumed with hatred as Derek was could be slowly and steadily changed for the better.
Derek's trajectory was directly because of how credibly Guy portrayed a good man showing him the way.
