Hey guys, sorry it wasn't your thing, but thanks for reacting - it's one of my favourites by him. The songwriting was great, some of those lines - "he took it pretty badly/she took both the kids", or "walking in slow motion/like he'd just been hit" and especially "did they have a future?/would he know his children?" - I just find it a very real and powerful song. Thanks again guys
Always liked this short, but sweet one. Gets to the point, feeds a picture in the mind and leaves the listener with a happy (if not, uncertain) ending. Cheers for doing this classic from one of my heroes!
This song speaks for itself. 🤷♀ I've known it all my life !!! It comes in nicely and fades out the same way.. Kind of like the lives of the subject characters
Here's some trivia for you guys. The line in this song "He went to The Buttery, he stayed about a year" refers to a drug, alcohol and mental health rehab centre on the north coast of New South Wales that operates as a not-for-profit charity. It has been helping people piece their lives back together for over 50 years. It takes its name from the fact that it used to be a butter factory in the early 20th century. However, a buttery was also a place where alcohol was stored in the Middle Ages. The area where The Buttery is located produces a lot of sugar cane, hence the line "He was riding through the cane, in the pouring rain" This song is regarded as a classic in Australia.
Paul Kelly is often referred to as an Australian Bob Dylan - although he sings in tune. He tackles lots of issues: Sweet Guy - domestic violence Deeper Water - growing through life's stages Broken hearts, disenchantment, indigenous rights in From Little Things Big Things Grow. Good old fashioned rockers like Darling It Hurts. His song Leaps and Bounds is a classic ode to hometown Melbourne's iconic sights. To Her Door is a deliberate take on a hard luck country song about a couple's struggles.
Lol, again, play Paul Kelly and you guys start talking! There must be something about him. And it's always great to hear you guys relax and talk. Oh, and I am not a country music fan, but this is folk, sort of, so I'm ok with it!
A lot of Aussies that grew up in this period can see themselves or their parents in this song and its video. It's quite Aussie, in spite of the universal theme.
Lovely little song. I was worried for a second when I saw your face drop, but it's good to see you getting the gist of it. I'll be like some others and persist with a request at the risk of your annoyance. Models' (music video) for ''Barbados''. James Freud was only famous for his solo hit ''Modern Girl'' a few years before he joined his schoolfriend, Sean Kelly, in his band Models. I made comments before about this request.. Hope you read them.
My Australian song for this week is *Cold Chisel - Flame Trees (Audio + Video merge 2023)* Also, I've sent an email that has two rare pictures of Cold Chisel and INXS; both worth using!

I saw PK and the Coloured Girls ages ago in Sydney when a support act to Stevie Nicks. She was awful but thank heavens for Paul Kelly, he and his boys (not girls btw) saved the night.

I asked a while ago for you check out Mark Gillespie's ''Only Human'' (nzoz1980 offers a video from what I can see). I knew Mark back in the 70's. He was part of the Carlton rock scene in Melbourne along with Paul Kelly. Jo Jo Zep, Skyhooks, Sports. All bets were on Mark to be Australia's next big singer/songwriter, but the God's decided on Paul Kelly instead.
Yeah, a lot of people find Paul Kelly boring, and songs like this don’t help dispel that idea. I think I’ve made some suggestions for him, so I won’t add to that, but some of his well known (and even very popular, as this one is) songs can be musically very basic or repetitive. Hokey probably sums it up quite well. If you are inclined towards solitude, inebriation and sentimentality this might work perfectly for you but it doesn't do anything interesting for me.
Paul Kelly has such an extensive catalogue. Rock, country, you name it, he's done it. Don't give up on him!!!

Loved Paul Kelly’s music since hearing the song “Dumb Things” on the radio many years ago, when he recorded as Paul Kelly and the Messengers.

classic !! The whole 'Under The Sun' album holds a lot of great underrated PK songs.
For something gritty, rocky and less G-rated, try Darling it Hurts.
For a confessional, try Careless.
For advice, try You Can’t Take it With You.

This song could be about James Freud. Those that read his two autobiographies would agree. I second Catherine's request for Models' ''Barbados''.
PK's tune got you talking. He's that sort of writer, and this was one of his radio songs.

Not sure Damon Albarn was writing songs in 1987. Blur released their first song in 1991.
