Paul Kelly is to Australia as Bob Dylan is to America. He doesn't just sing songs, he tells stories. The content is far more important than the delivery, but the delivery is also unmistakably, and uniquely his own.
Paul is a songwriter story teller. You’re right. He doesn’t have the powerhouse voice but often his lyrics hit hard. He’s the type of performer you could imagine sitting around a campfire with and just being mesmerised.
This was my request! I wanted to see how you would go with a guy like Paul Kelly, he's an amazing storyteller in his songs, and this particular one gets me every time.
Paul Kelly is by far my fave Aussie artist & I don't know how u managed to narrow it down to just one song but I understand y Nick & others aren't blown away by his voice. He's so awesome because of his storytelling & we relate so well to the words unlike someone like Gurrumal where words r kinda irrelevant & we just kinda feel it.
I wouldn’t argue with selecting this song. Lyrically it’s moving. Musically, Song From The Sixteenth Floor is my fave to sing along with, but overall it’s How To Make Gravy.
You are 100% correct he is a songwriter who can sing, not the other way round. He is music royalty in Australia though. I know this Chanel mainly focused on vocal performance but I highly recommend listening to “Making gravy” is a classic piece of songwriting and captures one aspect of Australian culture so beautifully.
Good honest and respectful review.. he's not about the vocals, though his voice is great for his songs, which are masterpieces. Each verse in this song is about a person getting deeper into new and scary experiences at different stages in life .. Swimming way out in the waves as a child, first fumble with a girl in a car, feeling his child kick inside his wife's belly, wife dying of a terminal disease and so on.. I could listen to him all day. Can't wait for you to discover Vika and Linda. Linda is singing in this clip, but you haven't heard her do her thing yet, and her sister Vika will knock you out of your chair. The two of them together are righteous..
You know your stuff, Nick!!! Paul Kelly is a legend and his song writing is phenomenal. Another rabbit hole for you to explore. I'm putting my seat belt on... ready!
I live in St Kilda, Melbourne & so does PK. He always has time to have a chat & say hi ... He is a legend singer/song writer, he is Australianer & a Humble Humble Person. he is also a consummate performer, he will arrive 2hrs to 3hrs before his gig & go through his song list & do a soundcheck, with his band ... he cares for his audience
Dive in deep with this man... It's worth it. I would say he's Australia's greatest songwriter storyteller. I would listen to 'Meet Me in the Middle of the Air' acoustic version for some killer harmonies. ☮️
Paul Kelly has a huge catalogue of iconic songs going back 4 decades. His voice is uniquely Australian, perfect for the natural storytelling he writes. For a Christmas treat check out his How to Make Gravy. He also did a Duet with Gurrumul of Amazing Grace that's worth a listen - two national treasures together.
Seeing Vika in back up has reminded me - for the Aussies scrolling through comments: if you're in regional NSW next year the ultimate Aussie line up is touring. Vika and Linda Bull, Jimmy Barnes, Diesel, Jon Stevens, Hoodoo Gurus (and a couple others I can't remember right now).
You are right, he ain't no singing power house, he's a story teller. A craftsman. Yet you treated him with respect and dignity. Good for you my good man.
The beautiful back up singer is Linda Bull, her sister is Vika. You would love their voices Vika&linda Bull. Vika recently toured doing the Etta James show such a amazing voice
Always loved Paul Kelly but I don't think me and me mates gave him the credit he deserved. We were listening to AC/DC, Pink Floyd and Led Zep. But when I hear him now I almost cry, he was Australia and one of the best what a legend. Love Paul Kelly brings back so many memories. He sang about us he sang about Australia.
For me its always leaps and bounds, memories of going to the G with my old man to watch an AFL game, seeing the clock on the silos, Ablett taking a screamer and we always put leaps and bounds on in the car on the way to and from the game.
Ohh, Deeper Water, an interesting choice for a first-time listen. It’s a fantastically nostalgic tune but I thought straight up that it won’t get a huge reaction from you cause PK certainly isn’t a powerhouse vocalist. He’s a damn good songwriter though, and you’re right: an Aussie legend
Paul Kelly is a legend. So many songs, he has written for so many other artists as well. The lady on vocal is one of the Bull sisters who are brilliant as a pair themselves.
This song, and all Paul Kelly’s songs get into your head. You will remember the tune and hopefully the message long after. He has had a difficult road in life. Truely a musical genius and has the demons to go with that genius. Thanks for reviewing. I hope you get to hear more of him. And look up the lyrics next time as you review. You will then understand Paul.
Didnt expect this, paul kelly hasnt got the voice of those you normally review. However, i'm a fan of P K, legendary Aussie singer songwriter with some great great songs. He is a real story teller in his songs. Maybe try From Little Things Big Things Grow (on land rights) or his Christmas song (with a difference) How to Make Gravy.
Other good ones from Pail Kelly "To her door" "Dumb Things" and "From little things big things grow". And possibly the best christmas song ever "Making Gravy"
To Her Door is one of my other favourites…..Actually all is his music/song writing is. But I totally agree, ‘Making Gravy’ is such a Aussie Christmas song & so a Paul Kelly song. It’s beautiful yet sad too.
As an FYI for People wondering about him. I'm posting his Wikipedia blurb here: Paul Maurice Kelly AO (born 13 January 1955) is an Australian rock music singer-songwriter and guitarist. He has performed solo, and has led numerous groups, including the Dots, the Coloured Girls, and the Messengers. He has worked with other artists and groups, including associated projects Professor Ratbaggy and Stardust Five. Kelly's music style has ranged from bluegrass to studio-oriented dub reggae, but his core output straddles folk, rock, and country. His lyrics capture the vastness of the culture and landscape of Australia by chronicling life about him for over 30 years. David Fricke from Rolling Stone calls Kelly "one of the finest songwriters I have ever heard, Australian or otherwise."[1] Kelly has said, "Song writing is mysterious to me. I still feel like a total beginner. I don't feel like I have got it nailed yet".[2] After growing up in Adelaide, Kelly travelled around Australia before settling in Melbourne in 1976. He became involved in the pub rock scene and drug culture, and recorded two albums with Paul Kelly and the Dots. Kelly moved to Sydney by 1985, where he formed Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls. The band was renamed Paul Kelly and the Messengers, initially only for international releases, to avoid possible racial interpretations of the word "coloured". At the end of the 1980s, Kelly returned to Melbourne, and in 1991 he disbanded the Messengers. Kelly was married and divorced twice; he has three children and resides in St Kilda, a suburb of Melbourne. Dan Kelly, his nephew, is a singer and guitarist in his own right. Dan performed with Kelly on Ways and Means and Stolen Apples. Both were members of Stardust Five, which released a self-titled album in 2006. On 22 September 2010 Kelly released his memoir, How to Make Gravy, which he described as "it's not traditional; it's writing around the A-Z theme - I tell stories around the song lyrics in alphabetical order". His biographical film, Paul Kelly: Stories of Me, directed by Ian Darling, was released to cinemas in October 2012. Kelly's Top 40 singles include "Billy Baxter", "Before Too Long", "Darling It Hurts", "To Her Door" (his highest-charting local hit in 1987), "Dumb Things" (appeared on United States charts in 1988), and "Roll on Summer". Top-20 albums include Gossip, Under the Sun, Comedy, Songs from the South (1997 compilation), ...Nothing but a Dream, Stolen Apples, Spring and Fall, The Merri Soul Sessions, Seven Sonnets and a Song, Death's Dateless Night (with Charlie Owen), Life Is Fine - his first number-one album - and Nature. Kelly has won 14 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards, including his induction into their Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2001, the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) listed the Top 30 Australian songs of all time, which included Kelly's "To Her Door", and "Treaty", written by Kelly and members of Yothu Yindi. Aside from "Treaty", Kelly wrote or co-wrote several songs on Indigenous Australian social issues and historical events. He provided songs for many other artists, tailoring them to their particular vocal range. The album Women at the Well from 2002 had 14 female artists record his songs in tribute. Kelly was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for distinguished service to the performing arts and to the promotion of the national identity through contributions as a singer, songwriter and musician
He was an old Soul when he was younger, his first song was as good as his most recent. He is our National Treasure, Want Goosebumps, See his Clips on You Tube, he has talent of getting the Greatest singers to join him and always promotes Female Singer. "From big things little things grow"
Its difficult to explain what this man means to Australia and the entire Australian Music Industry. If there was a round table of Australia's greatest artists Paul Kelly would be close to the head of that table. And the song every australian knows in a recent format "Dumb Things" with A.B. Original ua-cam.com/video/ICcewg7fxho/v-deo.html
I would have thought that song would be the best introduction to him. I've never even heard this one. School kids study his lyrics/poetry at school, so he's very special to Australia.
I see you have an appreciation in your reviews are about the talent and depth in pepoles voices . The gift that Paul Kelly gives us is the lyrics and the story telling , he is a word smith and can paint a picture with his words
As a couple here have mentioned, the back up singer is Linda Bull - she and her sister Vika are two of the greatest voices in the country and are much sought after. Have a look at them - you won't be sorry.
Yup, I knew going in you wouldn't be able to say much about his voice. He is legendary for his songwriting, and you picked that right up. I haven't heard this one before, so thanks for that.
So glad you're seeing some Paul Kelly, yes he is another Aussie legend. More of a storyteller, folky rock. This is not one of his big hits but does have plenty! This song does show his vibe well.
Paul Kelly has some special ability to evoke deep emotions through his lyrics. He is a songwriter, a poet. Admittedly not the greatest vocalist, but as shared human experience goes he sings our songs. "Deeper Waters" is a newer song but still demonstrates his ability to connect with you on an emotional level. At first glance there seems to be nothing especially poetic about a Paul Kelly song or his lyrics, yet it tugs on something real. Many Australian artists (and others) would be very happy to write songs like Paul. My favourite songs of his never fail to bring me to tears, yet i keep coming back. If you wanted to explore further "To Her Door" and "How To Make Gravy" would be my suggestions. Growing up at the time in 80's and 90's in Australia to heroin addicted parents and wider alcohol abuse in my family the stories he told seemed to me fairy tales. Even though they were tales of despair, it was always so hopeful to me. This man has connected with since i was a small child, and i have promised to give my daughter a different story to tell.
For a wonderful Australian voice from an earlier era look for a live version of The Seekers singing The Carnival is Over. In their day, they knocked The Beatles off the number one spot on the hit parade.
The best way to explain Paul Kelly is that he is a songwriters’ songwriter. If you were to ask any of the big Australian acts who they liked, respected or were influenced by, Paul Kelly would be on just about everyones list.
Glad you jumped into deeper water with Paul Kelly - try this version of ‘From little things big things grow’ - backing up Ziggy Ramo out front. ua-cam.com/video/9Jd3JZb7WVA/v-deo.html Powerful statement. Always was, always will be…
The 'backup singer' is actually Linda Bull. Her and her sister were very successful as part of the Black Sorrows for many years. If you get a chance check out "Chained to the Wheel" by the Black Sorrows. You're right about Paul Kelly. He's also done a lot of collabs, I actually prefer them to be honest. The one he did with Briggs and Trials (rappers) of "I did all the dumb things" is particularly cool.
I get what you are saying about being use to such amazing vocal range from Australia singers. But Paul Kelly is still a great singer, he just sings from the heart. Most of his songs are very chill like this, but my favourite by a long way is 'To Her Door'. You should check that one out if any of his other songs
The Bull sisters (that was Linda Bull with the accompanying vocals ) are brilliant. I loved them in the old days with Joe Camilleri- he &/or his former band Jo Jo Zepp [the song “Shape I’m In”] would be great to react to, too). Range of talent & rock.
I recall seeing him in November 1980 as his group, Paul Kelly And The Dots, were a support act for KISS. He's a man of great talent and is highly respected in the industry here.
When you watched Gurrumul, I thought about Paul. A big feature of my youth. Gossip is a phenomenal album. Just wanted to add, even if it's not the right fit for your channel spending an hour or two alone with Gossip could be worth it. Songs like "Randwick Bells" are simply beautiful.
Yeah Paul Kelly is a legend. He was my Mum’s favourite, so I’ve seen him live three times. He’s great live, definitely an entertainer. He has a bunch of great songs. From Little Things Big Things Grow (if you react to it make sure you look into the story behind it first), To Her Door, From St Kilda to King’s Cross.
Paul is not only an incredibly storyteller through song, but just a great bloke. I went to school during the equivalent of your middle school years with his nephew Lazare, and his sister Mary-Jo was my Head of Music at VCASS, a specialist performing arts high school in Melbourne I moved to from there. Paul would come to gigs at both schools, to hear Lazare play guitar or to support his sister’s students. Unassuming, generous and kind.
Great Aussie singers reach inside with simple, cutting lyrics. How life really is, no bullshit. Finding nobility in the earthy normality of life. That's Paul Kelly.
As much as I do love Paul Kelly's voice, it's his songs. His songs get in your head and live there. To her Door is my personal favourite of his. BTW, you're right about the band. I could name almost all of them, they are not *stars*, but top working musicians from my city (Melbourne.)
Mate. You are true there. He is a legend. Paul has a beautiful way of telling a story when he sings & he is a very iconic Aussie singer/songwriter from VIC. He is one of our finest.
He wrote, "From little things"(big things grow). Have you heard of Eydie Gorme (there is supposed to be an accent on the last 'e,' don't know how to put it on), love"Blame it on the bossa Nova." For a really strong voice, listen to Vera Lynn, "the White cliffs of Dover."
PK is an absolute legend. Of Australian music. He is a master story teller. The music is a backdrop to telling the stories of (especially but not exclusively Australian people). He cuts right to the heart and always has the right words to capture the culture of Australia. His music is timeless and is the soundtrack to many of our lives. I recommend listening to more of his music. Spectacular.
I remember seeing Paul Kelly and the colour girls at the Westown hotel in New Plymouth, New Zealand in the 1980’s. He was and is a great song writer and singer.
My favourite song of his is "To Her Door"... PLEASE check that one out! It was from the late 80s early 90s. A very Aussie voice and a slight Australian country feel.
Thank you for covering this! Paul is really a national treasure, this one especially makes me tear up every time, the nostalgia of being carried into the deeper water by my own father when I was young
Paul Kelly sings a song with the voice of someone you know, about places you know about things you know. His first hit "Billy Baxter" was a song about a Melbourne radio DJ.
Paul Kelly is to Australia as Bob Dylan is to America. He doesn't just sing songs, he tells stories. The content is far more important than the delivery, but the delivery is also unmistakably, and uniquely his own.
Exactly my thoughts
Paul Kelly and Neil Finn are 2 of my favourite storytellers.
Kane has nailed it, 100% agree mate
Perfect description 👍🏻
I never put 2 and 2 together but that’s a pretty good comparison
As a father, this song makes me cry every single time. The lyrics are amazing
Imma off for a Paul Kelly binge listen... 👋
An Australian legend, singer songwriter, storyteller, you should listen to, From little things big things grow. A champion for indigenous people
Paul is a songwriter story teller. You’re right. He doesn’t have the powerhouse voice but often his lyrics hit hard.
He’s the type of performer you could imagine sitting around a campfire with and just being mesmerised.
A story teller is right. He is our Australian answerto John Mellencamp.
Gurrumul and Paul Kelly - Amazing Grace. Amazing!

@@craighawkins3137 hard not to like HOW TO MAKE GRAVY esp now with so many people apart from their loved ones due to covid.
As has already been mentioned he's one of Australia's best songwriters and you should listen to his song 'From Little Things, Big Things Grow'.

I'm in East St Kilda ☺️
Paul Kelly puts you in the story as he sings the song. His voice is as real as story in his song.
I would have chosen a different song as an introduction to PK. Making Gravy or To Her Door would be better to begin with.
Dive in deep with this man... It's worth it. I would say he's Australia's greatest songwriter storyteller.
I would listen to 'Meet Me in the Middle of the Air' acoustic version for some killer harmonies. ☮️

We always listen to Paul's "How to make gravy" at Christmas
Glad you jumped into deeper water with Paul Kelly - try this version of ‘From little things big things grow’ - backing up Ziggy Ramo out front.

Powerful statement.
Sorry, also I love your channel, love your enthusiasm and I'm so glad you're doing this and thanks for shining a light on our talent!
I get what you are saying about being use to such amazing vocal range from Australia singers. But Paul Kelly is still a great singer, he just sings from the heart. Most of his songs are very chill like this, but my favourite by a long way is 'To Her Door'. You should check that one out if any of his other songs
Excellent analysis. Love this channel
The Bull sisters (that was Linda Bull with the accompanying vocals ) are brilliant. I loved them in the old days with Joe Camilleri- he &/or his former band Jo Jo Zepp [the song “Shape I’m In”] would be great to react to, too). Range of talent & rock.
Lucky was his original drummer
I recall seeing him in November 1980 as his group, Paul Kelly And The Dots, were a support act for KISS. He's a man of great talent and is highly respected in the industry here.
Hey Nick - I recommend listening to Paul Kelly’s “How To Make Gravy” a very quintessential song.
First Time hearing Paul Kelly? Man, haven't even watched it yet, I know you're in for a treat! Rock, soul, blues... you're gonna love this! 🤣
It’s cool you’re listening to our talented Australian musicians, Paul Kelly is a great storyteller
Pk is just a great story teller. Making gravy is one of my favourite Christmas tunes. (Not a typical Christmas song)
Best. Xmas. Song. Ever.
I’ll have to listen. There’s another Aussie Christmas song that gets me every time - it’ll take something special to knock Tim Minchin off top spot.
@@kayelle8005 oh yes WWITS, forgot about that one!
ooh Buddy New Aussie rabbit hole. Check out his back catalogue, it is amazing!
Paul Kelly is a legendary songwriter, has done numerous movie soundtracks
Paul is not only an incredibly storyteller through song, but just a great bloke. I went to school during the equivalent of your middle school years with his nephew Lazare, and his sister Mary-Jo was my Head of Music at VCASS, a specialist performing arts high school in Melbourne I moved to from there. Paul would come to gigs at both schools, to hear Lazare play guitar or to support his sister’s students. Unassuming, generous and kind.
Paul Kelly to her door is another good song my favourite
Great Aussie singers reach inside with simple, cutting lyrics. How life really is, no bullshit. Finding nobility in the earthy normality of life. That's Paul Kelly.
As much as I do love Paul Kelly's voice, it's his songs. His songs get in your head and live there.
To her Door is my personal favourite of his.
BTW, you're right about the band. I could name almost all of them, they are not *stars*, but top working musicians from my city (Melbourne.)
Paul Kelly, Richard Clapton , T Wiggles......the list of great Aussie story tellers in Rock is endless.
The song and songwriting is beautiful…depicting the circle of life. Everyone can relate to this song, especially in Oz.
You are spot on you got him within the first 20 seconds a brilliant story telling song writer , many better singers have covered his songs
I remember seeing Paul Kelly and the colour girls at the Westown hotel in New Plymouth, New Zealand in the 1980’s. He was and is a great song writer and singer.
If you want to get to know the Aussie sense of humour look up "Kevin bloody Wilson" is a classic Aussie musician/comedian.
Listen to To her Door & From little things big things grow. Both great songs. Paul is a legend in Australia. Great song writer awesome story telling.
Story teller at its best.
He does have great songs from every album and is one I can listen to for hours especially camping
My favourite song of his is "To Her Door"... PLEASE check that one out! It was from the late 80s early 90s. A very Aussie voice and a slight Australian country feel.
Barnsey and Farnsey are vocal superheroes. PK is Everyman in his singing. The songs are the important thing.
Nailed it mate he is one of our greatest poets. I don't know anyone who dislikes PK from kids to grand parents we all love him.
This is so eerie being played at an empty Sidney Myer Music Bowl. This song has always brought tears to my eye since I was a kid
Paul Kelly is a story teller. Enjoy the story his .
Thank you for covering this! Paul is really a national treasure, this one especially makes me tear up every time, the nostalgia of being carried into the deeper water by my own father when I was young
Love his music
Paul thinks of himself as a Poet, his backup singers get Solos.
Vika or Linda Bull is the backup singer. The ladies are fantastic. The guy on drums looks like one of Jimmy Barnes's kids.
He has a lot of hits.
enjoyed this ✌️🍷
Paul Kelly sings a song with the voice of someone you know, about places you know about things you know. His first hit "Billy Baxter" was a song about a Melbourne radio DJ.
