To add some context for you, the line "He went to The Buttery, he stayed about a year" refers to a place on the north coast of New South Wales that has been helping people with drug, alcohol and mental health issues for about 50 years. It is a not-for-profit organisation that does fantastic work. It derives its name from the fact that the property where it is located used to be a butter factory in the early part of the 20th century.

Paul Kelly is an Aussie folk legend. His ability to verbalize emotions and locations, rationalize complex interpersonal relationships and carry a good tune while he’s doing it put him squarely in the top tier of Aussie musicians. I’ve been a fan for more than 30 years.

The lyric "He was shaking in his seat... riding through the street..." never fails to get me emotional.
Men aren't supposed to be that raw and real emotionally in songs. Especially not in Australia, where stoicism is the most prized state of being.

My father retired from the Victoria Police at the age of 55 as a Detective Chief Inspector. I hope you have many long years to enjoy your retirement. Dad said he had seen too many bosses retire at 65 and pass away before 70 so retired early. He passed away at age 80 so had a good retirement. Actually he stopped work at 54 and 6 months as he used up his sick leave because he was going to lose it on retirement. Come visit us in Australia 🇦🇺

Thanks Jessica. I used to think about it when I was in my 50's but couldn't make it happen. I had to make sure I paid everything off including my house. Now everything is in its place. So I'm pulling the trigger.

@SonofBuck-f7z Another incentive dad had was a change in the superannuation system that effected Senior Police so he was better off retiring earlier. Quite a few Senior Police retired around that time an VicPol lost too much experience in one hit in my opinion..It was only years after dad retired I came to appreciate how dangerous his job was. I sat and listened to him talk shop with other retired Police and after a few red wines they loosened up 🤣

I love Country music, both Aussie and American...
    ......................
Did you know, if you play a country song backward, your truck doesn't break down, your dog doesn't die and your wife still loves you?.
    ......................
How many country singers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Just one to change the bulb and four to sing about how great the old one was!

When my parents got married they moved to country Victoria as dad wanted to be a herd Tester back then. They had very little but soon had furniture as all the neighbours called in to welcome them the day they moved in and gave them furniture, curtains etc. They had a apple box as a table

Congratulations on your pending retirement Mike. I retired at the age of 61, so glad I retired while I was active enough to enjoy the traveling that came with it. I also dodged the Covid bullet too. The best thing about retirement, for me, is no alarm clocks & finally making time for me.

Australia will appoint our first Poet Laurate in 2025. There is perhaps no finer candidate than Paul Kelly. His breadth and depth of work is simply astonishing. I believe he is under serious consideration and would be a distinguished ambassador for the arts in this Country.

The best thing about retirement is, you have time to do more of the things you enjoy doing, things you’ve always wanted to do but didn’t get around to. You don’t have to feel guilty about pleasing yourself for change. I’m spending time doing things with my grandkids, taking them out and having fun.😊

To me Mike, Paul is a poet who happens to also write music that backs his poetry. His songs are all stories ..relatable to all of us and many all over the world for their pictures of life he turns them into. This one has always been a favourite of mine and his catalogue is huge with so many yet to be reacted too by you and also enjoyed. He once said he simply watches life and write down what he sees or hears and form that come his masterpieces.

If memory serves me correctly, the woman in the video was Paul Kelly's actual wife (Kaarin Fairfax). Also, in the original un-edited version of the song (I have it!), just after his wife says 'So watch me Walking, Out the Door, Out the Door', there's this line: She said, "Shove it Jack, I'm walking out your f#@king door". It's actually a very powerful line, full of emotion. See if you can find it, it really sets a powerful tone. Some radio stations here in Australia will play the full uncensored version late at night, others tweak the wording to remove only the F word, but keep the rest.
    PS I love Paul Kelly!!!

When we married we only had a plastic outdoor table and chairs for our dining table for a few years. We struggled then, and other times over 31 years, but we're still together. For better, or worse, in sickness and in health.

Paul Kelly takes the single most popular chord progression in pop music (I, V, vi, IV) (in G major here), adds a heart wrenching and relatable story to it, and bangs out a hit like this, and so many others too. Something so crazily simple in theory, yet so few can pull it off. He looks great here by the way, but he’s also one of those who has aged nicely!

What is sad about this is song is that so many aussies romanticise it.
They have failed relationships and are absolute dead set on getting back together no matter how many chances they are given.
Seen far too many that just couldn't comprehend why their wives or husbands blatantly refused any chance of getting back together and then end up in a black and dark place.
And all of them loved this song specifically and a few others that are similar.

Mike enjoy your retirement, work on your truck and enjoy cruising in it. I think the big thing with retirement is to have a hobby/interest. You have to keep mind and body active, don't retire and just sit on the couch. I'm a car guy and have 6 classic cars and at 71 still enjoy working on them and keeping them on the road including engine swaps etc.
