What makes Col. Grylls such a great choice - you can hear it in this video. He can connect with the young soldiers coming through by sharing his life and his adventures while also acknowledging that the world is very different now to the one he came up in. Back in his day, things weren't as immediate, as online, as unforgiving as they are today. Its a whole different ballgame for these young men and women but Col. Grylls can see that, he can see the potential in these young people and he wants them to succeed and to believe in their future and their country. We need more people like him. So many people his age are full of disdain for the youth of today - they don't understand them, they don't understand the world of technology they're surrounded by and they often feel resentment at the future changing so quickly, and so they fall back on what they remember and whats comfortable and then look for the gap between than and what they see (but do not understand) today. Col. Grylls isn't like that, and that's why he's such a natural leader and the men and women under him at the college will no doubt feel trust and respect from him and towards him.
@dynamo1796 you realise how faked the majority of those stupid survival shows. He slept in hotels every night. No wonder Britain is going to the dogs with fools easily impressed by an actor. 😂😂😂
Amazing to be there. My eldest passing out and my youngest in shot in the background! Fabulous, proud of all of them. Bear Grylls did the most beautiful speech. Thank you.
His fall at 16,000 feet is one of the highest falls anybody has survived without an opened parachute. (1994-1997, served in the Territorial Army then parted ways with the SAS due to an accident doing free fall parachuting - his parachute didn't open, and he broke three vertebrae in the process) ...In 2004 was awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Reserve. In 2013 he was awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines Reserve
Being a 75 year old ex-forces veteran, found this clip so inspiring. Bear describes the Armed Forces Family so well. This clip needs showing in schools, colleges and universities. Oh how I wish I were 16/17, I’d do it all again!
Bear's a great ambassador for the forces, the scouts, and great many other organisations. His focus on his brand and to his family as well as his faith is solid. Well done to those who've just passed out, and thank you to all that serve passed and present.👏 😉👍🇬🇧
Man, Bear is the kind of guy that when you see him you think oh hey what's up buddy even though you've never met him. The guy just makes you feel good and happy. Bear for PM!
Such a proud day to watch my son pass out from Catterick he had his kilt & Glen Gary all the lads were gleaming army made the strong hard working man he is today fears no challenge all his hard work & the tools the army gave him to achieve it,it really will make young men and women in to strong proud people well done to all that passed out in this video 👏👏👏👏👏
I joined as a Junior Leader (RE) back in 1972, had a great career in the Army (18 years) and went on to serve 25 years in the police. It's a great life if you embrace it and work hard, friends and experiences that will never leave you.
Very powerful words. I am a US army officer. I went to a private military college in the USA. These words could not be more true and resonate across generations.
An inspired Appointment given to Bear Grylls, as if anyone can inspire young recruits going through British Army Basic Training, he can. He has spent his life inspiring young people to be adventurous and to push themselves to try something new and different.
I went to Harrogate in 1970-1973 training as a Terminal Equipment Technician in the Royal Signals. It was a good decision and I stayed with the Royal Signals for the whole of my career, yes, there were up and and downs but the experience of 25 years in the service of my country has never left me to this day!!
Well in troops, keep the head held high and always be proud 💪🇬🇧 Ex army, 12 years service just under my belt. It's outstanding to still see young men and woman have that motivation to take that first step in signing up and taking on the challenge. Again well done troops and stay safe.
Colonel Bear hit the nail right on the head with his comments and observations. Having served 12 years between both Royal Artillery and Infantry and thoroughly enjoyed my time, I can only say that the British forces will only ever encourage anyone to go as far as they want, either in their chosen job or, education. The training and self discipline stays with you throughout the restnof your life. I just wish I could have my time again. I'd encourage any young person to go fo
i was never a fan of the comic and movie heroes but bear grylls , he tought me to be strong by showing us ow to be strong, the crocodile man, my hero a man prowess, seeing him getting old brings tears to my eyes.
Couldn't have picked a better guy for this role, he is pleasure to listen to so much common sense. I remember my passing out parade in the early seventies what a great day that was then waiting for my first posting as a soldier.
Who better than Lt Col Bear Grylls "brilliantly British and rooted in great values, friendships, endeavour and challenge" well said at a time when so many people sneer at being British. Those people know what they can do.
I at 19 was humbled by my Reservist Military Service. I egotistically expected it to be easy, and thought I would be the Top Recruit... Then reality set in ... and I finished in the middle to lower ratings. The forced march at the end was diabolically hard... As it should be...! I think most young people need to go through something similar to expose them to the realities of the World. I am thankful for my experience.
I still watch Man vs wild on Discovery channel. I never get bored. The Man The Myth The Legend The Bear Grylls. A lot of Love, Respect and best wishes from a Fan in India.
Back in the day (the 1950s) every man had to do their National Service, and my dad always said it made a man of him. Military Service really is a great start in life.
GOOD FOR HIM! There is a certain sadness when you've been medical'd out of the military... a sense of 'I had more to do' with that part of one's life. I'm glad that Grylls is being welcomed back into the fold. Let me also say to the graduating soldiers: Welcome to the Brotherhood. No matter where you go and what you do in your future life, there will always be a piece of you that is 'ARMY'. Enjoy the feeling and take pride in your work. A sincere and respectful tip of the Stetson from an old US Army cavalryman and 'cousin' from across the Pond.
As unfortunate as his forced separation is, his situation leading up to it is somewhat insane. A 16,000 foot fall with no functional parachute is a feat in itself to survive.
He’s such a humble person, he’s being thru it all and the story behind him He’s a great man ! And best of luck to new troops on your path to great careers
Watching this from America. Good on you all for naming this man your Hon Col, you can tell he takes the honorary role seriously as a responsibility to represent it with the highest level of respect and dignity. Id just be careful if he asks you to join him on a "small hiking trip" lol
American here so forgive me for not knowing a bunch about this. From my brief research it’s similar to the US military’s split ops for high school kids who are 17 to go through training during their summer break and return back to school to finish their last year and THEN do their job training. From what I saw the British military takes kids as young as 15 who would then transfer to the adult units at 17. Do they resume their education at like a military school or after their whole training return to their school and drill as a reservist? If the US allowed something like this I’d have done it, did Civil Air Patrol and it made me so much better physically and mentally. CAP really only prepared you for customs and courtesies and drill really, but this program seems to actually let you be a soldier so when you turn 17/18 you’re already 2-3 years experienced in your role instead of essentially LARPing lol. It definitely works for the UK seeing how the military size isn’t as large as it was before so it needs younger members to be prepared instead of waiting for 17/18 year olds to join and have no experience yet. Good job for these boys and hope many of them have a great career.

I think its pathetic, giving some guy who made fake survival videos is given a fake rank.
I think senility has arrived for you, thnx 4 your service
Maybe because he was part of it; people joke about him but Bear Grylls served in the SAS during the 90s
