  • In this video I will show you how to remove the drift in the knuckles thumb stick by replacing the component its self. You can pick up broken controllers for cheap, 9 times out of 10 it's usually the thumb stick that goes bad. Or you just want to upgrade the controller with better internals!
Yeah I know, the video quality is kinda crunchy in the beginning. :P

You'd think someone at valve would run into these videos once in a while

This was an amazing video! Thank you so much for this valuable content. I just got a Valve Index and one of my fears is the price of replacing the controllers... but I'm a tech nerd and a tinkerer, so I definitely feel like I could do this if I needed to. Or if some extra controllers fall in my lap.

If you don't want this to happen basically saying if you don't want this to happen sooner than use the trackpad (or whatever you call) it more often Instead of the joystick or completely make the switch. Also good video. I'm just giving people a recommendation.

Ehh wants the point of playing on one of the best hmds if you have to make compromises and play on a tiny trackpad though if you even can in most games

Excellent video. I will possibly be doing this myself at some point!
Do you have any thoughts on the Trigger and the touch/proximity sensor misfiring? Might that be something that can be taken apart and made better?

it's worth noting that Valve is very forthcoming regarding RMA for this issue. in my case an RMA after 3 years was no problem. so you might want to try that road first before potentially breaking your controller.

I tried, and after 2 month of messaging back and forth with support they just said "well warranty is over nothing we can do"
Even though I did contacted support for another problem also stating the drift issue one year prior. After the first problem got resolved through RMA they closed the ticket so i figured i wait until the drift issue gets even worth before I open another ticket right away as I read multiple times that valve is forthcoming.
Guess I've learned that you should RMA as soon as possible to still be in the warranty window. Especially since it comes off as if they would try to stretch out time by making the Support process as long as possible. Even ignoring things that have been said not even 2 messages before, making you do things that just did again as if there is no coherency.

I'm not having any luck with a 30-watt soldering iron for some reason. Cannot melt the solder at all

This is a potentially very useful video. How well has the all-metal replacement part held out? Does it function correctly? Does it feel different? I was unaware that there was a better version of the joystick used in the Knuckles.

So far the replacement has lasted about 200 hours of light use. It functions exactly the same as the old one and the spring seems to be a little lighter. I'm not completely sure if the metal one is better. I'll update the description if does break along with Ifixit's video on joystick drift. They do a way better job at explaining this than I am.

@@nulledfloof Thanks for answering. My Knuckles controller has developed drift and its nice knowing that there is an alternative. What I am wondering is whether this is a more proper fix for the issue and whether this is repeatable (potentially expanding the lifespan of my Knuckles beyond warranty).

    • @nulledfloof
      @nulledfloof  3 роки тому

@@AdamWhistle1 I would say it's the most proper fix, you are replacing the entire joystick assembly with a new one.

@@AdamWhistle1 And yeah, you can do this as many time as the board don't get damaged.

Man, idk why controller manufacturers dont use hall sensors, cant wear out if there aint any moving parts

Haven't even bought the index yet. I'm kind of discouraged because of the controller issues people are having..

Hey Dude, Is the controller stil working? I'm not so sure how long those china made components would last.

You say that as if literally every controller is history wasn't produced in China.
