Primadonna is about, well, how she is a primadonna, it connects to Bubblegum Bitch since her boyfriend isn't real love, yet she wants him to pop the question because she gets everything she wants. Lies is about Electra finally falling for someone, he doesn't want her back, she eventually lets him go and is heartbroken. Homewrecker is about her realising she's not able to find a real love, she becomes a homewrecker and is a side chick. Starring Role connects to Homewrecker, she's falling for someone again, she's not playing the starring role in his life, she's the supporting role and again she lets another one go. The State of Dreaming is one of the most depressing songs on the album. Electra considers her life a play, she's gone through heartbreaks and felt like her life doesn't make any sense. Power and Control is kind of a feminist anthem. It fits into the story, because she has been getting her heart broken a lot and felt like a man is over her in the relationship, she realises he's not really worth it. Sex Yeah is Electra fighting for women rights and fighting against gender roles. It applies to both men and women. Women are taught to wear clothing that covers them and Men are aren't really allowed to be feminine. I totally agree that there's still a huge problem that people seem to ignore. Teen Idle is about Electra Heart regretting she had never been an idle teen. She regrets her past and wishes she had more fun. She felt suicidal as a teen, she didn't have any fun, that's also the beginning of her becoming a heartbreaker. Valley of The Dolls is about her being fake to herself and people around her being fake just like she is. We tend to put on masks with different personalities, we don't want people to see who we actually are. Hypocrates is about people, particularly boyfriends wanting her to be this and that whilst they won't be changing for her. How To Be a Heartbreaker is her accepting the fact of being a heartbreaker. All the time she was getting heartbroken because she didn't really stick to the second rule. "Don't get attached to somebody you can lose." She's been doing that the whole time, which was her mistake as she wasn't only breaking someone's heart, she was also breaking her own heart. Radioactive is about a guy that she always had fun with but eventually they broke up. This time she wasn't heartbroken, she warned him she will leave him drowning unless her reaches for her hand. Fear and Loathing is Electra accepting her true self. She's a heartbreaker and tired of being fake to herself and people around her. She does not want to live in fear and loathing, she wants to finally be happy with herself and people around her. The "dolls" are what they called the various pills they had to take to sleep, then to stay awake, then to sleep etc. So, sleeping in the "valley of the dolls" means needing prescription drugs to function.
Electra Heart is kind of a concept album, Electra is basically the antithesis of everything that Marina stands for. During this era she changed her image and always wore a heart on her cheek to represent when she was marina and when she was Electra (there was, of course, some true about her personal life in all those lyrics). It's a really cool concept and if you're interested you should read about it, there's like a whole story build around it with music videos in her channel. The Family Jewels, her first album, is more personal, such a raw album, raw lyrics. Froot is all about discovering herself, kind of; and she wrote it all by herself, and also took a big part on the production. I'd love for you to react to both!
This album was supposed to be called Die Life (the title was meant to have a double meaning with "die" being the female article of nouns in German) and Electra Heart was just a side-project that was supposed to be released under the name of the imaginary pop Star Electra Heart, but her managers scrapped Die Life and she had to focus on Electra Heart and she turned it into an album of her's that focuses on different archetypes. Housewife, Beauty queen, Homewrecker, Popstar Diva etc. I think she had influences from her own life in the lyrics but most of it was just made up. I really enjoy the album, it just brings me back memories when How to be a Heartbraker and Primadonna we're blasting every 5 minutes on the radio. the fact that i listened and was obsessed with this album at the young age of 13 explains so much
personally I love Marina because I love pop sound but regular mainstream pop is usually emotionally void, but she makes pop music so meaningful. I feel like she says so many things that people are afraid to in 'mainstream' pop and not only gives you something many people can relate to and discuss while expressing true feelings but also gives you something to dance to while you contemplate your existence and life choices lol.
